Subject: A "Making Life Work" Thought - November13, 2007

Taking Crazy Risks

Driving a car is full of risks. After we pass a serious car accident we find ourselves

driving more carefully. The feeling lasts for at least a kilometre, more if we are

really shocked by what we saw. But it doesn’t take long for the feeling to pass

and our speed soon increases again. After all, 'it won't happen to me', we say.

All Australians were shocked by the sudden death of 'Crazy John' Ilhan. 42 years

of age, a very rich, happy family man, with the world at his feet. It seems his death

was highly unexpected so we can only presume under that happy go lucky exterior

was a stressed workaholic driving himself to an early grave. You probably wondered

about your own life style, at least until your next urgent appointment.

We all want to make the most of our lives, each in our unique way. Within reason,

stress is good for us. It's important though to get the life mix right. Having the right

mix of mutually-energising work and personal interests increases our chances of

achieving a long, fulfilling life, while minimizing the crazy risks that can lead to an

untimely early death.

For me, the importance of enjoying loved ones and my choir singing has assumed an even

stronger place in my work/life mix these days. What's your work/life mix like?
