Subject: It's Book Release Day! - September16, 2006

Friday, September 15, 2006

Hi Folks!

This is it!  Release day!

I just received two pictures of my daughter and myself (see photo gallery) from a BlackExpression2005 group member I met at the Harlem Book Fair.  I just realized I never did give my impression of that day so I'll give a brief synopsis: It rained.

LOL.  Okay, that wasn't all that happened. My daughter (my greatest accomplishment in life) showed up to support me and two great women from The Phenomenal Women Yahoo group showed up to support me, pass out bookmarks and generally do some hand holding. The fabulous thing about it, was I'd never met them before, face to face, but they believed enough in my vision to show up.  They even brought me back lunch as well!

One of my homies also showed up to get his autographed copy of the "test" books (printed up just for Harlem Book Fair -- you didn't think I was going to show up there empty handed, did ya?  LOL).

My homie arrived at the end of the fair so we packed up and walked around a bit to catch the ending of things.  I caught a glimpse of Omar Tyree and Mel Jackson.  I was cool when I saw Omar, but I had to do everything within me not to act like a star struck fool when I saw Mel.  I just thought of my homie's dignity and his view of me as a "relatively sane" person and I was able to keep it together--just. We then had dinner and got caught up--then he gave me a lift to Port Authority in time for me to catch my bus back to Pennsylvania.

All in all, it was a day that I wouldn't have missed. And durned if AIJAN'S title and topic didn't cause some buzz.  This guy in his twenties came bustling up to the table to get a looksee for himself because he heard some people down at the other end talking about it.  I was tickled pink and gratified because the hours on the bus I'd spent cutting out bookmarks had be justified--those bookmarks were working overtime!

Here's to first times and new experiences.

Peace,

Dee

P.S. Stay tuned for my experience of holding my finalized copy of my book in my hands for the very first time later today.  If it goes anything like how I felt when I received the proof? There'll be tears and a copy will reside by my head for a week.

CONTEST Day 3: September 15th UNTIL 12:00 MIDNIGHT September 17th(EST)

Hi Folks,

Again there was no winner yesterday (confused now) so there are now three opportunities to win an autographed copy of AIJAN!

The URL is:

In my first article, "Age is Just a Number?" in the Let's Talk section of the site, I've linked to an article that I chanced upon yesterday morning that I think will be a great dialog starter, I've started off with my take and I'd love to hear yours.

Task:

  • Click the link on the above site

  • Read the linked article in the Let's Talk section

  • Share your opinion using the email provided.

The first email received wins etc.  With your permission, the responses will be featured in the feedback section of the next issue of the AIJAN newsletter.

Q & A:

Q: Why do you write?

A: As a child I wrote to keep an account of the good things I’d never want to forget;
As a teen I wrote as a silent cry for help;
As a young adult I wrote the things I hoped one day to forget;
As a thirty-something woman I wrote for clarity, catharsis and peace;
Now I write for the pure joy of expression with the hope that with every word I share I might prevent someone from going where I’ve been.
