Facilitator Journal | Issue #0254, May 2, 2006 ....
Dear
friends,
I've always had a love/hate relationship with public speaking. As
a borderline introvert, I prefer not to be in the public light.
But there's a part of me that yearns to be in the limelight (for
the astrologers among you, I'm on the Leo/Virgo cusp). And after
being on-stage, I come away truly energized and enlivened. After
attending a recent teleclass lead by my new friend and speaking
expert, Lee Glickstein, I came away much more excited and confident
about public speaking.
As it turns out, Lee is not only a very well respected public speaker
and public speaking trainer, he is also an introvert who values
authenticity...a man after my own heart. Lee was quickly able to
show me some behaviors that I can use in public speaking that not
only feel natural to me, but turn out to be prerequisites for extremely
powerful speaking.
In this week's article, "Presence, Ease & Flow,"
Lee and his colleague, Jo Anne Smith, share some of their speaking
tips with us. If these sound good to you, join Lee and I Tuesday,
May 16th for a one-hour exploration into his radical approach to
public speaking that involves creating a "relational presence"
with your audience. See details after the article.

Skill
I've always had a love/hate relationship with public speaking. As a borderline
introvert, I prefer not to be in the public light. But there's a part
of me that yearns to be in the limelight. And after being on-stage, I
come away truly energized and enlivened. After attending a recent teleclass
lead by my new friend and speaking expert, Lee Glickstein, I came away
much more excited and confident about public speaking.
As it turns out, Lee is not only a very well respected public speaker
and public speaking trainer, he is also an introvert who values authenticity...a
man after my own heart. Lee was quickly able to show me some behaviors
that I can use in public speaking that not only feel natural to me, but
turn out to be prerequisites for extremely powerful speaking. Among those
behaviors are Presence, Ease, and Flow. Here's what Lee has to say about
these as they unfold in his ongoing Speaking
Circles.
PRESENCE
is being with and staying with one person at a time no matter how it
feels.
EASE emerges
when Presence becomes comfortable and pleasurable.
FLOW develops
from Ease as the right words and actions arise spontaneously in any
moment.
It's Flow that most
everyone desires; Flow in communication, love, money, work, health, spirit,
creativity. Flow inexorably emerges from the capacity for Ease with self,
others, and the world. And the pathway to Ease is through Presence, which
is the priority of Speaking Circles.
Presence
Presence is absolute availability to oneself and others. When we are fully
Present, we not only see, hear and appreciate our listeners, but we also
allow ourselves to be seen openly in each moment, without mask or cover-up.
There is a range of reactions among Speaking Circle participants to the
emphasis on Presence. Many experience an immediate revelation, an ecstatic
homecoming that never ends. For others, exploring Presence initially brings
with it the opposite of Ease: discomfort.
Presence as a priority has nothing to do with "feeling good."
Rather, developing the capacity to be present at any moment in life is
where personal, professional, and spiritual development intersect. Common
strategies or habits for avoiding the discomfort of being present include
hiding behind our personality, over-thinking, over-preparing, over-talking,
performing, disconnecting, and "talking at." When we are willing
to make coming back to Presence a priority at any moment (no matter how
it feels, or how difficult it is to think clearly), the pathway to Ease
is cleared.
Ease
Ease is the grace of embodied Presence. It happens when Presence becomes
a pleasure and light fills the room. It can take hold at one's first Circle
and deepen from there, or it may take awhile. Fortunately, there is such
great satisfaction in the community of listening that the path provides
its own rewards as people experience Ease permeating their public presence.
Speaking Circles
inherently lead one into a natural mastery of "easy listening"
that serves in all aspects of life.
Flow
As for Flow, we've seen the singular wisdom and discovery that flow from
Ease in Speaking Circles. We've heard participants report dramatic breakthroughs
in work and relationship resulting from what they've learned about themselves
and about life. We've experienced the laughter and tears, the stories
and creativity that electrify the room when the person who is the center
of attention is in absolute Ease.
Flow is the
state that mobilizes one's full potential for action without effort. With
Speaking Circle practice, many people notice themselves increasingly functioning
from this state in their personal and professional lives.

Checklist
You know you have mastered PRESENCE when you:
Can stand in front
of any group and always and only be with one individual at a time no
matter how you feel or what you think.
Allow yourself
to be seen and heard, without cover-up or technique.
Can maintain soft
eye availability at all times in front of a group, even if it is uncomfortable
to do so.
Can feel nervous,
anxious or afraid and still stay in relationship with one listener at
all times.
You know you have
mastered EASE when you:
Experience the
pleasure of simply being yourself in front of any group with no feeling
of pressure to please or perform.
You feel grounded
in inner stillness in front of any group.
You experience
physical sensations as excitement or anticipation, rather than anxiety
or nervousness.
You know you have
mastered FLOW when you:
Embody Ease while
you engage your intellect and sense of discrimination so your words
and actions flow effortlessly.
Maintain Ease while
what you know (and what you didn't know you knew) flows naturally from
your mind, heart and spirit.
Notice that you
are living life with more and more clarity, passion, authenticity, and
in harmony with the moment.

in Coaching and Mentoring in 1996. A lifetime of stage fright motivated
him to develop an elegant approach to break through the widespread fear
of being fully oneself in the world. This discovery led him to a profound
understanding of the principles of natural communication through Relational
Presence. For the past sixteen years, Lee has been a keynote speaker,
consultant, trainer, and Speaking Circle Facilitator. He is author of
Be Heard Now! Tap Into Your Inner Speaker and Communicate with Ease (Broadway

Leverage Your "Relational Presence" for
Masterful Group Leadership
The Introverts answer to public speaking
and group presence
Featuring Lee Glickstein, author, speaker, trainer, and founder
of BeHeardNowTraining.com
When you stand in front of a group to open a training, a meeting, or a
talk, where typically is your anxiety on this continuum?
Terror -- Fear -- Anxiety -- Coping -- Ease -- Flow -- Mastery
Anything less than Ease (which cannot be faked) translates instantly into
anxiety for the group. If you aren't able to take a full, natural, unselfconcious
breath before saying a word, the group will constrict their breathing
and their listening. Bad start, yes?
Join us for this
live, one-hour tele-seminar where you will discover what it takes
to facilitate from full engagement and receptivity in every moment. This
surprising secret to masterful group leadership is not grounded in technique
or dynamism; rather it is about developing your innate capacity to facilitate
listening and learning by being transparent. We call the key "Relational
Presence," and by the end of this session you will know its power
and understand how to cultivate it in your own style.
Join Lee Glickstein and Steve Davis for this teleseminar on Tuesday,
May 16th at 1:00 PM Eastern (NY Time). Click

Managing people from
a distance isn't easy
Do you need to get rapid
results from people collaborating across multiple locations?
This class will discuss managing
remote relationships and frameworks for successfully managing
projects across large distances. There are issues created by
the geographic distance between team members. But those issues
can be overcome, and in fact, the potential of a distance team
to accomplish amazing feats far outweighs any logistical liabilities.
Project development teams scattered around the country or around
the globe can take advantage of the best scientific minds, technical
skills and subject matter experts...if they can manage the remote
relationships effectively. This course will build remote management
competencies by providing a framework for success and applying
it to real-life examples. The course contains consolidated information
packed into a one-day format.
In
this training you will learn to:
