Chart Your Course

Have you ever noticed how much research people do when they are making a major purchase such as buying a new home or new car??  Usually, they can give you all the excruciating details such as the horsepower of the car engine or the rating of the schools in the neighborhood they are looking to buy in.?  Isn??™t it amazing that most of us don??™t invest nearly that much time planning our lives??  Without a roadmap or a course that we lay out for ourselves, is it really a surprise that at some point most of us look at our lives and realize we haven??™t done the things we want to do or that we aren??™t where we want to be in our lives??

Most people will tell you that planning life seems so, well, boring.?  To some it seems a little difficult, but it doesn??™t have to be torturous.?  The New Year is a perfect time to set some goals for ourselves ??“ real, specific, attainable goals.?  Goals that you are going to work to achieve, not stuff in a drawer and forget about.?  We??™re not talking about wimpy New Year??™s resolutions either.?  The goals should address every aspect of your life ??“ financial, fitness, and yes ??“ FUN!

I can already hear the reasons why not ??“ the ???I don??™ts??? I referred to in the premier issue. (If you missed the premier issue you can read it online at? www.unsolicitedadviceonline.com? ).?  ? Let??™s address a couple of the ???I don??™t??¦.??? here.

I don??™t have enough time.?  There are 168 hours in a week.?  The average person spends 50 hours working including commuting. Let??™s be generous and say you sleep 50 hours a week.?  What are you doing with the other 68 hours?

I don??™t have enough money.?  You might be surprised how inexpensive some of the things you want to do are.?  Have you checked to see how much it really costs??  I??™m willing to bet if you haven??™t written it down as a goal you haven??™t researched what it would take to accomplish.?  For example, how much do you think it costs to swim with the manatees??  For those of you within driving distance of Crystal River, Florida, it will cost you $15 for two hours.?  If you need to rent your mask, fins, snorkel, and wetsuit it will cost you an additional $17.?  Still think you can??™t afford it??  For more information on swimming with the manatees, visit www.manatee-central.com.? ? ?

What??™s your dream??  What are your goals??  If you need help getting started, email us at unsolicitedadvc@aol.com.

Forget Me Not

Is one of the goals on your list to remember birthdays and anniversaries this year??  Check out the online services that make remembering easy ??“ they do it for you!?  Just enter the birthdays and/or anniversaries you want to be reminded of and set the frequency and timing of the email reminders.?  Don??™t know someone??™s birthday??  No problem!?  Send them an email from the reminder service giving them instructions on how to go online and enter their birthday for you.?  They even have e-cards you can send right from the site.?  There are several services out there but www.birthdayalarm.com?  and www.happybirthday.com are the best I??™ve found so far.?  Birthday Alarm gives you unlimited reminders and Happy Birthday gives you 100 reminders.?  Best of all ??“ it??™s FREE!

On the Go

Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn without Blowing It! by Peggy Klaus is a must read/listen to.?  Brag has become a dirty four-letter word, but Peggy Klaus explains how you can convey your qualifications and achievements to others without sounding like a boring, self-absorbed braggart.?  She also teaches you how to handle several situations that most of us dread such as introducing ourselves to strangers in both business and social settings and how to handle interviews.?  Regardless of what you do for a living, check out this audio book!

Reader Response

I heard lots of positive feedback regarding last month??™s reader response.?  If you have a dream that you??™re not sure how to pursue or have feedback in general, I want to hear from you!?  Email me at unsolicitedadvc@aol.com.
