Is Hell A Real Place?
By Sherly Isaac
Often people argue whether hell is a real place or just a figurative term. Many believe that when a person dies he or she just dies and that there is nothing beyond death.
But Bible talks about 'after life' time and time again. Often we can read in the Bible about two types of life after death. One is wonderful and joyous but the other one is horrible and painful. Jesus said in Mat 13:49-50, "So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come forth, separate the wicked from among the just, and cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth."
In the Old Testament also we read similar things. In the book of Job chapter 18 we read of Bildad talking to Job assuming that job could have
committed some kind of sin and because of that he was suffering.
Job 18:5-21, "The light of the wicked indeed goes out, And the flame of his fire does not shine. The light is dark in his tent, And his lamp beside him is put out. The steps of his strength are shortened, And his own counsel casts him down. For he is cast into a net by his own feet, And he walks into a snare. The net takes him by the heel, And a snare lays hold of him. A noose is hidden for him on the ground, And a trap for him in the road. Terrors frighten him on every side, And drive him to his feet. His strength is starved, And destruction is ready at his side. It devours patches of his skin; The firstborn of death devours his limbs. He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before
the king of terrors. They dwell in his tent who are none of his; Brimstone is scattered on his dwelling. His roots are dried out below, And his branch withers above. The memory of him perishes from the earth, And he has no name among the renowned. He is driven from light into darkness, And chased out of the world. He has neither son nor posterity among his people, Nor any remaining in his dwellings. Those in the west are astonished at his day, As those in the east are frightened. Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, And this is the place of him who does not know God."
The whole passage speaks about a place where wicked or a person whose sins are not forgiven, goes after death. And it is a horrific place that is filled with brimstone and fire, a place of darkness where there
is no light. More than that we read, “The firstborn of death devours his limbs. He is uprooted from the shelter of his tent, And they parade him before the king of terrors.” It literally gives an idea that after death souls that are not saved would be taken before the king of terrors and they would be in constant fear and pain.
But in the 19th chapter of Job, Job replies to his friends saying Job 19:25-29, “For I know that my Redeemer lives, And He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me! If you should say, 'How shall we persecute him?'; Since the root of the matter is found
in me, Be afraid of the sword for yourselves; For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, That you may know there is a judgment."
Job was completely sure about his destination that though his body is destroyed yet he will see his Redeemer who lives. This was the assurance he had because his sins were forgiven and he was leading a righteous life.
He also warns his friends that they are in danger of being punished with sword because there is a judgment day. He says, “Be afraid of the sword for yourselves; For wrath brings the punishment of the sword, That you may know there is a judgment."
Yes, there is a life after death but the question is, "where are we headed? Are you sure as Job was, that at the other side your Redeemer waits for you?
If not, know for sure that at the other side king of terrors, sword and judgment awaits you. Turn to Jesus, repent from your sins and make sure that you are going to heaven before you die.
Standing in the Gap - Fasting prayer on 8th Apr. 2008
As the Bible says in Ezekiel 22:30 "So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it." And also the Bible says in Numbers 16:48, "And he (Aaron) stood between the dead and the living; so the plague was stopped." We have fasting prayer every second Tuesday of each month. Our next fasting prayer meeting will be conducted on 8th Apr. 2008
