The situation will arise when we are called upon to stand up and speak our minds out. When that situation comes are we ready deliver? public speaking is one of the most feared activities in a person’s lifetime. Anxiety and stress will usually attack once you get off your seat and start to speak. Sadly, this fear is the cause of lost promotions, low self esteem, miscommunications and similar situations. But why do some people excel on it? They make it look so easy…I guess through practice one can improve his public speaking skills but in the mean time here are 6 guidelines and questions that you will make your life easier when speaking in public. Who? Who are you talking to? Know your audience, their background, values and common interests that may help you in your presentation. If you are speaking to a group of accountants then it will help if you focus your speech on data and statistics, or if you are speaking to a group of teenagers, you should know the latest fashion or in-thing so you can establish rapport and make your speech lighter and simpler. Knowing your listeners is imperative to a successful speech. It will also help you relax if you know the people who are going to listen to your presentation. Where? Knowing the venue and being there early is half the battle. Try to get a feel of the place. Stand on the stage or where ever you are suppose to deliver your speech. Try to visualize your audience listening to your speech. Check the sound system and the availability of audio-visual aids if you need to use some. Being at the venue early will give you some time to prepare and compose yourself. You can also afford time for a last minute tweaking of your speech. What? What do you want to say? What is the speech for? If you are speaking to educate and inform your audience, make sure that you have accurate and updated facts in your presentation. It is not enough that you have prepared and have memorized your speech; you should also know what you are talking about and have made a thorough research about it. How? How can you deliver your message across? A sound language skill is not enough to ensure success as a public speaker. Choose your words carefully and be sure to enunciate them. Poor articulation and pronunciation weighs much in evaluating your presentation. Visual aids are helpful to get your message across. You may use handouts or technical presentations to support your points. But the best visual aids are your facial expressions, hand gestures and body language. When practicing your speech, try to do it in front of a mirror to see how you look Make sure that you have a solid opening, a good transition and a memorable conclusion. When? When is the best time to speak and stop? In communication, words are not the sole means of conveying a message. Your pause and stops also play an important role in delivering your point across. Know when to start speaking and when to stop. Be aware of how long your speech is and tailor it to suit your audience. If you are speaking to a groups of seventh graders, then chances are their attentions span is shorter than that of a twenty something university student. Why? Why should they listen to you? Why were you chosen to speak in public? Determine the reasons why you were picked to deliver a speech. It may be because of your educational background, your work experience or your status in the community. What ever it is, they want something from you. Identify the reason and prepare your speech to answer the audience expectations. Speaking in public need not be a painful experience that you would rather forget and bury in the past. Just answer these basic questions and you have are half way there. There is no substitute for preparation so make sure that you have plenty of time to do this. Knowing what you want to say and saying it right is the perfect equation. One more thing, remember to relax and enjoy the experience. Because there are so many different kinds of literary agents out there, it is important to be careful when picking one for your own needs. The first thing you should do when looking for an agent to represent your work is to familiarize yourself their area of expertise. Not all agents focus on works of fiction, some are only interested in technical books, while on the other side of the coin others enjoy pursuing works of poetry. After finding the ones that fit your field, you now have to locate the agent who has your best interest at heart and not theirs. Many book agents get caught up with their own agenda. Locating book agents who are legitimate is nowhere near as easy as you think it is. In reality, there are a great deal of quality agents in the business. Now, if you are looking for people who claim to be book agents but are instead scammers, bad at their job, unhelpful, or in it only for themselves, there are more than you could ever handle. But to locate one relief trust or the than some of that has your best interest at heart in it is to get the job done as a full-time job on itself. A first-rate book agents work diligently, and have a real good idea of how to do their job by working for a reputable agent. After learning hopes by talking to publishers and authors on their own and understanding the way in which the business truly operates, that they usually start up the presence of their own it are to competently manage it. They will work for you and never ask anything of you that has to do with money. They will edit books as needed without a charge, as that is part of their job. Dishonest book agents will be looking for money up front before a book is even sold. Quality book agents wouldn't do that. They realize that the real money is made as part of a percentage of the amount you are paid on a book that is sold so this is the first true way to tell scamming agents from real ones. Scammers will also try and hide their client lists as confidential, but it is usually because these dishonest book agents will have a clients because of their shoddy work. Unlike legitimate book agents, scammers will not offer book revisions for free and will usually try to get you to go to an outside source to have your book edited. As book agents, it must have the skills to edit the books themselves as a part of the service they render to you. It all comes down to doing your homework and checking out the various book agents and being sure you are comfortable with the way they run their businesses. If something doesn’t seem right to you, it probably isn’t so don’t hesitate to move down the list of possible book agents until you find one that meets your needs perfectly. Remember this is about you and your book and they are there to service and help you, not the other way around. The discipline and organization that writing a novel or nonficition book takes is one of the many good qualities that are going to help succesful authors. When I looked at the possibility to write for a living, never in my wildest dreams did I think about marketing. I wanted to write a good book, worthy of publication and one that my readers will love and tell others about it. That will be the ideal situation for us as writers, a book that sell itself. Unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. The truth of the matter is that there are certain marketing knowledge that every author should possess in order to succeed. But I don’t want to discourage you here, I just want you to know what it is expected in the industry since now more than ever publishers take in more consideration authors who knows their writing, their competitors, its readers and how to promote their own work. Authors who have this knowledge have a greater chance to be offered a publishing contract than those who don’t. The number of books published daily is just too big for publishers to promote all of them. Most likely those authors with good sales tracking records will be promoted first. Before you write your book research the topic and its competition. Can you write something that it hasn’t been covered and need to or can you write a book on a popular theme better than it has been written before? Be ready to spend some money. As an authorpreneur, like any other business, you will incur in expenses in order to put the book in front of its audience. Be ready to invest in your book promotion with time and money. Do something to promote your book on a daily basis. It could be as simple as writing a press release, making promo- tional fliers, passing out your business cards to people you know and meet when you do your errands. Visit writers group in your are or online and get to know others who like you like or write your genre. Be creative. Just like you are creative in your writing you need to be creative when it comes in the ways to promote your work. Since you know your audience you can think of effective ways to attract their interest. Look in magazines, newspapers, book reviews at the bookstore or online and see how they do their promotions, stories, articles, etc. Even when you publish your next book there must be away to include your previous published work in your promotions. Don’t ignore technology. These days a lot is done online and you shouldn’t disregard the opportunity to use it to spread the word about your book and with it, it’s message. Websites, blogs, forums, e-mail and newsletters or e-zines can be the vehicle to let the world know about your book. Do your best to create a community around the main purpose of your writing efforts in that way you’ll have a captive and growing audience that is interested in your work. Keep perfecting your craft. I don’t have to tell you how to be a better writer, it’s being an authorpreneur that is a daunting task for many of us. Make it your task to study succesful authors, read their memoirs and how they went about their success and how they continue to reach their audience. Read about marketing in all areas an aspects that are applicable today. Get together with others artists in your town and exchange ideas and resources off and online.
