On this issue we'll touch on couple of issues integral for
book promotion; book tricks to help you sell your book and
we continue with blogs and how to make them work for you.
The more time I spend in this medium the more I learn and
I hope you are experiencing some success with what we share

Self Publishing Book Tricks You Can Use
********************************************************
By Christopher Kyalo

There are a number of self publishing book tricks that you can learn which can make a huge

difference to the level of success that you will ultimately attain. A lot of the most

effective tricks and tips call for a very deep understanding of human nature and lots of

creativity.

For instance the book you end up self publishing will sell a lot better if you use the age

old trick that has served publishers well for centuries, of focusing on a nagging problem.

The more serious and pressing the problem is the better your book you will sell.

Yet another of the really effective techniques from the publisher's bag of tricks is to

create a publicity or media event around the book you are self publishing long before its'

release. The idea is to create a buzz in the media that will cause people to sit up in

anticipation of the release of your book. This is one of the favorite tricks employed by

Hollywood to market films, and they should be no reason why it will not work just as well

for the book you are self publishing.

Another trick of the trade is to create the sort of book title for your self publishing

venture that cannot be ignored. If your title does not work there is nothing wrong with

changing it. One of the common tricks employed by publishers on books that do not sell is to

repackage them by mainly giving them a new title. This trick has worked marvelously in many

instances and is well worth considering if the book you are self publishing does not sell

well initially.

valuable resources.

This month we'll give you some more sites where you can
submit your book for reviews, many of you have asked for it.

http://www.book-blog.blogspot.com/ - This is a blog of
book reviews

http://www.readerviews.com/ - Reviews by readers

http://tcm-ca.com/authors.html

I probably mentioned this before but it's a good reminder, the
ideal time to get your reviews before you publish your book.
If you print a galley of your book send it for reviews at
least 90 days before it's release date in that way you have time
to get your reviews back and included in the first printing
of your book.

Learning to Blog - Part VI by Clary Lopez

********************************************************
There are two ways I try to keep up-to-date with the
content of my blog and you should do the same.  Every
blogger has their favorite blogs that they read on a
daily or weekly basis. I have a bookmark in my browser
to keep them handy when I have some time available to
read.  Another way is to add it to my RSS in My Yahoo!
If you haven't added some of your blogs with this method
is very easy to do.

Go to Yahoo! and sign up for an account if you don't have
one.  On their choices you'll see a way to set up your
My Yahoo! with all your favorite stuff; news, music, travel,
weather and more.  Now, when you find blogs that interest you
look for the RSS sign and click on it and choose to add it
to your Yahoo! or MSN (MSN also has a way for you to have
a custom page with your favorite content) enter your username
and password and confirm the addition of the blog RSS and viola!
Next time you open you My Yahoo! page the lastest post on that
blog will show up on your page.  I have a growing list of blogs
so I browse through them and pick and choose what interest me.
Of course doing your rounds and commenting on blogs that interest
you will eventually bring courious bloggers your way also, especially
if you provide something of value with your comments.

This is the best way for content to be distributed and read on
a regular basis, unlike bulk emailing message to email lists.
If you haven't set up your RSS so that the content of your blog
is syndicated in this way you can do so at:

Feedburner.com,
rapidfeeds.com
or http://jade.mcli.dist.maricopa.edu/feed/index.php?s=build

Get Personal With Your Target Audience
*********************************************************
by Alan Baxter

Marketing is something that is essential and time-consuming.
It can be expensive, but we Guerrilla Marketers make an art form
out of getting the word out there cheaply. At least, that’s the
credo. So, assuming that we are successful in saving money while
we market our books, our primary investment is our time. How much
time do we need to put in? And where?

Anyone that has had any success marketing their book and making
sales knows that it can be a full-time job in itself. I know that
my efforts at marketing my current novel are having an effect on
the writing of the next one. It’s something that I need to balance
carefully and constantly reevaluate. For this reason, we can get
precious with our time. However, it’s important not to get too precious.

It’s a dangerous trap to fall into when we start thinking things like,
‘That’s not worth my time and effort. Only a handful of people will see it.’
Or, ‘What’s the point in spending all that time marketing to one person?’

Think like a reader. When you read a good book, the first thing you want
to do is tell everyone all about it. You want to share the great experience
that you had and get other people to enjoy the story or learn from the book’s
message. This kind of word of mouth advertising is about the most valuable
advertising there is for people in our position. I know that in my “day job”
(I’m a Personal Trainer and Martial Arts Instructor) I have more clients now
from word of mouth than from any other source of marketing or advertising.

So one person you talk to in the supermarket queue or the chat room online,
for five minutes here and ten minutes there, might buy your book. If they do
buy your book and like it, they’ll tell their friends about it. Maybe two of
those friends will buy the book too, trusting the recommendation. If they
enjoy it, they’ll tell their friends. And so the word spreads, fractally and
exponentially.  You have to imagine every single person you talk to as the
trunk of a tree with many potential branches.

And there are many opportunities to get close and personal with potential
readers.  The obvious networking at parties and social events is always a
favourite. I love it when people say, “So what do you do?” I tell them that
I’m an author and I give them a card. Then I get chatting about reading
and writing and gently plug my book. They usually ask right away what I write.
If they don’t like that genre, chances are they know someone that does.
“That’s great,” I reply. “Maybe you’d pass on my card next time you see them?”

Then there are all the other opportunities in daily life. People behind the counter
in local shops that you get friendly with, mornings waiting for a bus, queuing in
the bank or the post office. The possibilities are legion.

Then there’s the wonderful worldwide web. Where would we be without it? The
opportunities for chatting to people over the web are greater than in real life!
For example, I was interviewed recently by a great community website called
Dredlox.com. The interview was posted in their discussion forums. I noticed that
a couple of the users there had left a few comments about the interview and about
me. So I signed up and got an account there and posted a reply to the discussion.
They were blown away that I’d taken the time to talk to them. I noticed new sales
they very next day. There’s no guarantee it was them, but it could well have been.

I enjoy talking to people about my book and what I do and they enjoy talking to me,
it seems. Now, not only will they know about the book, but they know about me. They
like me and think that I’m a nice guy. When they talk to their friends, they’ll tell
them about how they got chatting to an author the other day. Not just some faceless
name on the cover of a book, but a real person that took the time to say hello to them.
The word spreads.

So don’t dismiss the little things and the individual market. People remember a nice
person and a chat and they tell other people about it. It’s enjoyable for both that
person and the author and all it costs is your time. And you might end up making some
good new friends along the way as well as selling some books. I certainly have!
