 **Mama Meows Recipes**

**Jackson Pollock Candied Apples
Named for the abstract expressionist's
signature paint-splattered canvases,
these apples make great Halloween treats.
Green Granny Smiths go well with the sweet
white and bittersweet chocolates, but use
any apple you like. Look for wooden sticks
at craft supply stores, or use forks nstead.                                                  Ingredients:                                                         6 Granny Smith apples
3 ounces bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped
2 1/2 ounces premium white baking chocolate (such as Baker's), coarsely chopped                                                Preparation:                                                                                                        Wash and dry apples; remove stems. Insert a wooden stick into the stem end of each apple.                                                     Place bittersweet chocolate in a glass bowl; microwave at HIGH 1 minute or until melted, stirring every 20 seconds until smooth. Working with 1 apple at a time, hold apple over bowl. Using a spoon, drizzle apple with about 2 teaspoons bittersweet chocolate. Place apple, stick side up, on a baking sheet covered with wax paper. Repeat procedure with remaining apples.  Place white chocolate in a glass bowl; microwave at HIGH 1 minute or until melted, stirring every 15 seconds until smooth. Working with 1 apple at a time, hold apple over bowl. Using a spoon, drizzle apple with about 1 1/2 teaspoons white chocolate. Place apple, stick side up, on baking sheet covered with wax paper. Repeat procedure with remaining apples. Chill apples until ready to serve.                                                 Yield                                                                                                                       6 servings (serving size: 1 apple)

**Chocolate-Peanut Caramel Apples                                     Semisweet chocolate and chopped peanuts make mighty fine partners for a caramel apple.

1. Rinse and dry 5 apples (we prefer Granny Smith and Fuji varieties, 6 to 8 oz. each). Insert a craft or popsicle stick halfway into the stem end of each apple. Line a baking sheet with plain parchment paper or wax paper that has been generously coated with butter.
2. In a bowl set over a pan of simmering water, combine 14 ounces (about 50 pieces) unwrapped soft caramels (such as Kraft) and 2 tablespoons water. Stir frequently until melted and smooth.
3. Holding the stick, dip each apple one at a time into the caramel about three-quarters of the way. Swirl to coat evenly.
4. Hold stem side up and use a knife to scrape excess caramel off the bottom of apple back into bowl. Place apples on the parchment paper or buttered waxed paper and refrigerate until caramel is firm, about 5 minutes.
5. Return pan of water to a boil; remove from heat. Place 10 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate in another bowl and set over pan. Stir frequently until chocolate is melted and smooth.
6. Dip the bottom half of each apple in chocolate, turning to coat evenly. Hold stem side up and use a knife to scrape excess chocolate off bottom of apple and back into bowl. Place each coated apple on the parchment paper or buttered waxed paper and refrigerate until chocolate is slightly set, about 10 minutes.
7. Place 1 cup chopped unsalted peanuts on a plate. Roll bottom third of each apple in peanuts to coat. Refrigerate until chocolate is firm, about 15 minutes.

**Toffee Candy Apples
Instead of caramel, dip your apples into a rich toffee mixture of dark brown sugar, molasses and butter.

Ingredients:                                                                                           8 Granny Smith apples
1 1/2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup dark corn syrup or molasses
2 tablespoons stick margarine or butter
1 tablespoon white vinegar                                                  Preparation:  Wash and dry apples; remove stems. Insert wooden sticks into the stem end of each apple; set aside. Line a baking sheet with foil. Combine sugar and remaining ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat; cover and cook 3 minutes. Uncover and continue cooking, without stirring, until mixture reaches 280° (about 8 minutes). Remove from heat. Quickly dip apples in sugar mixture; allow excess to drip off. Place apples, stick sides up, on prepared pan; cool completely. Yield          8 servings

**Candy Apples                                                                             Ingredients:                                                                                             8 wooden craft sticks
8 medium Gala apples
2 (6.5-ounce) packages caramel apple wraps
1 (16-ounce) chocolate bar
16 ounces vanilla bark coating
Orange paste food coloring
Toppings: colored sprinkles, chopped peanuts, black writing gel
Preparation:
Insert craft sticks into apples. Cover each apple with 1 caramel wrap. Microwave at HIGH 15 to 20 seconds. Cool. Melt chocolate bar in a small saucepan over low heat. Dip each apple into chocolate; let dry. Melt vanilla bark coating in a small saucepan over low heat; stir in orange food coloring.  Dip or drizzle each apple with vanilla coating mixture. Decorate with desired toppings, and let dry. NOTE: For testing purposes only, we used a Ghirardelli chocolate bar. Yield  Makes 8 apples

**Meringue Bones                                                                         Ingredients
3 egg whites
1/4 tsp. (1 mL) cream of tartar
pinch of salt
2/3 cup (150 mL) granulated sugar
1 tsp. (5 mL) vanilla
Cooking Instructions
Preheat the oven to 225 degrees F (105 degrees C). Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.
In a mixing bowl, with an electric mixer, beat the egg whites with the cream of tartar and salt until foamy. Gradually — one spoonful at a time — add the sugar, beating well after each addition so that the sugar is absorbed into the meringue. Continue beating until the meringue stands up in a glossy, firm peak when you lift the beaters out of the bowl. Beat in the vanilla.
Spoon the meringue into a pastry decorating bag with a plain round tip approximately 3/8-inch (1 cm) wide (a bit smaller is ok, but no smaller than 1/4-inch). Pipe 3-inch (7.5 cm) bone shapes — one long line with two rounded blobs on each end. Pipe all the meringue at once because it cannot be baked in batches — it will deflate if it sits too long.  Place the cookie sheets in the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour. Without opening the oven door, turn the heat off and let the meringues remain in the oven for 1 more hour to dry and crisp.  Remove from cookie sheets carefully — you don't want any broken bones!

 **Mama Meows Tips**

*Outdoor uses for Vinegar
When you have to leave your car outside in the winter,
mix 3 parts vinegar to 1 part water and coat the windows with this solution.
This vinegar and water combination will keep windshields ice and frost-free.

*Shoes
If you're at the office and discover that your shoes need a shine.  Rub in a bit of hand cream and buff with a tissue.
**Thanks To RecipeGoldmine**

*To keep a paint tray like new, insert it inside a plastic bag. Pour the paint into the tray. When you're finished painting, pour the remaining paint back into the can (or an old jar if there's just a little bit left.) Throw away the bag! No cleaning the tray.

*Glue a paper plate to the bottom of the paint can.
The plate should be an inch or two wider all around than the can so it can catch drips. This saves you the trouble of moving
newspapers around under the can.

*When stick-on air fresheners lose their odor, remove the plastic top. Soak the felt in boiling hot water for several seconds. Place it on a paper towel to absorb most of the water. Replace the felt and lid. Or just run them under hot water briefly. They last and last and last if you do this every couple days.

*Attach a stick-on air freshener in your favorite scent to the top of one of the blades on your ceiling fan. Turn on the fan (use the low setting so as not to dislodge the freshener) to circulate the fragrance throughout the room.

*Place a drop of scented oil on a cotton ball, and add it to your vacuum-cleaner bag.

*Ants
For a nontoxic ant repellent, drip lemon juice into floor boards, window sills, cracks in the walls, or any other place where ants appear.

*Ashtrays
This works for all except crystal or glass ashtrays. Coat the surface with your favorite furniture polish. The protective coating will allow buildup to rinse out.

*Bathmats
Instead of throwing away old towels, cut out the best parts and stitch them together to make a bath mat.

*Blankets
When space is tight, store blankets by laying them out smoothly between the mattress and springs of a bed.
Before storing blankets for the summer, wash them and add 2 cups of mothballs to the rinse water.

*Coat freshly-polished brass with wood finishing oil, such as tung oil. It makes the shine last three times as long. When you are ready to clean the brass again, remove the oil by wiping the surface with a little paint thinner on a soft, cotton cloth. You are now ready to polish and re-oil the brass.

*A new straw broom will last longer if you soak it in hot, heavily salted water before you use it for the first time.

*Candles
To remove candle wax from upholstery or carpet: After wax hardens, scrape up excess with a dull knife. Place a white paper towel over the remaining wax. Place a warm iron over the paper towel and press gently. Repeat until all the wax is transferred to the paper towel. If the wax was colored and leaves a stain, pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a rag; gently dab the stain. Mix one teaspoon of a neutral detergent (a mild detergent containing no alkalies or bleaches) with a cup of lukewarm water. Blot.
To mend a candle that has broken, hold the two pieces under very hot water to melt the wax, then press the two parts together.

Save the stubs of candles in a coffee can. Melt all the scraps together. Insert a wick to make a new candle.

Use a piece of raw spaghetti to light candles. This prevents burned fingers.

To keep candles looking new, rub a soft cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol over the stems.

Store candles in the freezer. They will burn longer and drip less.

*Carpets
To repair damage from cigarette burns, cut undamaged threads from the corner of the carpet or an inconspicuous place. Glue them into the burn hole. Cover with paper towels and a book to dry for 24 hours.
To remove indentations caused by furniture rearrangement, apply moisture from a steam iron and brush the nap of the carpet.

*To prevent painted cement floors from peeling, before you paint them again, pour a bottle of white vinegar in a bucket and "paint" your floors with it first. After the vinegar dries, apply a coat of paint. This will work on most metal surfaces, also.

*An effective pesticide is to use a 50-50 mixture of boric acid and sugar every night for about 10 days. Sprinkle on wiped-dry sinks, drain boards, tubs, showers, around pipes, and behind baseboards. CAUTION: Keep children and pets away.
A one-pound can of boric acid compound can effectively keep a house cockroach-free for one year. It will not kill roaches as rapidly as some pesticides, but it has by far the longest lasting effect. Sprinkle it in cracks, crevices, under sinks and in other dark places.

*To clean copper-bottom saucepans, smother the surface with tomato sauce, leave for a little while, rub stubborn areas and rinse.

*Restore the body to limp Dacron curtains by soaking them in one gallon of water mixed with one cup Epsom salts, then rinse.  Make good looking curtains from bed sheets, either plain or fancy.

*Dishwasher
Try a tablespoon of vinegar in the dishwasher rinse - it's a lot cheaper than the commercial rinse aids.
Run 1/8 cup citric acid crystals through a dishwasher cycle to get rid of any brown spot build up.

Save energy by turning off the heat dry, and poppinh open the dishwasher to let the dishes air dry at the end of the wash and final rinse cycle.

*Drains
For clogged drains, pour in equal amounts of baking soda and salt. Follow that with a pot of boiling water, and flush with cold water to keep them open.

*Drawers
If drawers stick, rub a bar of ordinary hand soap across the runners to make them glide smoothly.

*Dusting
Wear old cotton gloves to dust with instead of carrying a rag around.
If you can't shake your dust mop outside, shake it inside a large paper bag.

*Dustpans
Wax them and the dirt will slide right out.

*Faucets
To polish, place a dab or two of toothpaste on a wet sponge and rub the faucets and handles briskly, then rinse them with clear water.

*Hand Wipes
Make your own by putting three capsful of baby shampoo into a spray bottle full of water. It works well and costs a lot less.

*Potpourri
Stuff old socks with potpourri, tie them and hang them in closets for a wonderful smell.  Save glass jars with the lids. Punch holes in the lids. Fill the jars with potpourriand screw the lids on.
