OregonMom.com Newsletter -- April 27th, 2006

*********************************************************

Hi, Moms!

If you've joined the rest of the country and are celebrating
National TV Turnoff Week (April 24-30th), then good for you!
If you are getting a late start in turning off the tube(or
just feeling a little reluctant), it's not too late to try
several days of TV free living.  Yes, I know for those with
little kids this may mean you won't be able to take a shower
for a few days...but rest assured, you won't be the only
greasy mama in town.  I'm taking a break from the regular
format this week to send you a few ideas that will hopefully
make this endeavor easier and maybe even so much fun you'll
boot that box for good!

Here is a link to the official TV Turnoff website:
http://www.tvturnoff.org/

Have a wonderful week!

you think would enjoy it!

IDEAS TO KEEP YOUR KIDS (AND YOU) BUSY DURING
NATIONAL TV TURNOFF WEEK (OR ANY DAY):

~Cook with Your Kids
We all know little kids love to cook with adults,
but the big kids may need more convincing.
You might have success by having your teen or
preteen help you make two batches of cookies -
one for their friend, and one for your family!
Take a look at this popular book that parents and
kids love to cook by:
http://www.oregonmom.com/kidscooking.htm

~Make a Family Photo Website
Yes, this does include time in front of a
screen, but making a website is a fun
family project as you work together to
choose styles, wording, and photos to show off.
Check out babiesonline.com to easily make a
free website:

~Container Garden Together
Plant a tub o' spuds, make a water
garden in a barrel, or plant a window box.
Find these ideas and more in my favorite
book on gardening with kids:
"Roots, Shoots, Buckets & Boots"
http://www.oregonmom.com/rootsshoots.htm

~Take a Trip to a Unique Location
The new DVD "Portland at Play" is dedicated
to exploring the noncommercial family fun around
Portland.  Of course, if you're abstaining from TV you
can't watch the DVD this week, but it's a unique idea
and resource for local families.  Powell's Books
is offering free shipping on all their DVDs right now!

~Outdoor Water Painting
Keep your toddler occupied with a small bucket of water
and a paintbrush.  Let them "paint" the fence, trees, or
your driveway. Find more ideas like this in the book
"Wonderplay."
This book should be in every mom's survival library:
http://www.oregonmom.com/wonderplay.htm

~Moms!  Here's a hugely popular website(you've probably
already heard about it) called Tickle!
It's an interesting place to take free self discovery
quizzes when you would normally be watching this week's
"Law and Order. " Are you a supermom? Do you know your IQ?
Find out here:
http://www.oregonmom.com/ticklefun.htm

I'll be back with the regular format next week featuring free and cheap local outings and more deals for families!
