G'Day All

With our weather being really hot, no one wants to cook. Apparently we don’t have a heat wave until we’ve had 3 days over 35°C - well, I think we can call this a "heat wave" then. So, don't forget about my catering services. Some ideas:
- Picnic for two
- Mediterranean Platter served with Tzatziki - Pita breads; Keftes (Greek meatballs); Tzatziki, Marinated Mushrooms; Olives & Feta
- Mixed Satays served with a Thai sweet chilli sauce - Satays consisting of: beef & chicken; sweet chilli sauce; Dhania
- Assorted Sushi - served with Soy Sauce for dipping - Maki Mono rolls: Californian rolls; Vegetarian rolls; Tuna/Salmon Nigiri
- Assorted Cocktail  Platter - Assorted cold meats; cheese & cocktail onion toothpicks; Olives; Tricolore Skewers (basil, cherry tomato, feta)
Wines in the "garage" at the moment ...
4 X 6 Azania Shiraz 2003 - John Platter 3 star rating @ R25
Supercharged fruit & aromatics characterise punchy/spicy. Whiffs anise & pepper stand out against well-gauged oak background; suggestion of sugar accentuates sweet-toned fruit. 20% Fr-oaked. 13.5% alc.

2 X 6 Tribal Winemakers Collection Pinotage 2004 @ R20
Cheery sort of wine, quaffable, honest varietal expression; lots of squishy fruit.

2 X 6 Out of Africa Organic Merlot/Cabernet 2004 - John Platter 3 stars @ R30
leafy under growth & hint meat, medium body; savoury dark-choc fla -vours. Combo Vdal/Dbnvlle fruit.

4 Diemersday Sauvignon Blanc 2004 - John Platter 3 stars @ R30
fragrant, hints guava/goose berry; bright bone-dry minerallypalate, soft yet very dry. All above EW.

50 X 6 Somerfield Red 2003 @ R20
Soft , smooth, easy drinking with fruity, wild-berry aromas and blackberry fruit flavours.

6 Cape Soleil Organic Pinotage 2004 - John Platter 3 stars @ R25
Shy pinot-like character: light-tex tured/col oured, muted earthiness;some grainy tannins; appealingly different from the block buster style.

10 Kersfontein Bush Vine Shiraz 2004 - John Platter 4 stars @ R40
Unmistakable varietal signatures ' smoked meat & plum, peppery sniff ' on a generous, fruit-sweet palate. 13.5% alc
Vista fails to 'wow' the online world
While Microsoft trumpeted Vista worldwide yesterday, the Internet abounded with postings from people unimpressed or downright disappointed with the new operating system.

Fancy a 3 day West Coast Tour with me?
AFRICAN SAFARI'S

THREE DAY, WEST COAST TOUR - For more info. contact me.

Day 1

Leave Cape Town and travel inland on the N7 towards Paternoster. Stop at the Fossil Park, en route. Some important and exciting discoveries include Agriotherium africanum, the first bear ever found in Africa south of the Sahara, Homiphoca capensis, an extinct true seal and four extinct species of penguins.

We then continue towards Vredenberg through to Paternoster - Cape Columbine Lighthouse is the last manned lighthouse built in the South Africa.

Stay overnight in the Tietiesbaai nature reserve.

Day 2

Head to Club Mykonos with it's casino and nearby Saldanha Bay. Saldanha Bay is the largest natural bay in South Africa. Then through to Langebaan - in the middle of the lagoon, is a bird sanctuary so it’s strictly off limits, but you can paddle really close to it and watch the gannets, gulls and cormorants squabbling amongst themselves.

Lunch at Perlies on the Langebaan lagoon (not included in price).

West Coast National Park where superb views are offered to visitors throughout the Park including:

Seeberg, where on a clear day you can see Table Mountain and the Cedarberg as well as the southern part of the lagoon. Atlantic view overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain is also visible; Plankies Bay

Then we leave the park and head towards Yzerfontein. Yzerfontein's coastline has both rocky and sandy white beaches. Excellent view points from Pearl Bay Heights - from where you have an unspoilt view of Cape Town?s Table Mountain in the south and Dassen Island in the west.

We then head inland towards the village of Darling.  Darling is rich in art and culture.and lies between vineyards and golden wheat fields.

Wine route in Darling (wine tastings not included in price)  - Darling is now a demarcated wine district and home to her own wine route.

Overnight in Darling – evening braai at guest house (Darling se slagter maak heerlike boerewors)

Day 3

Explore more of Darling and the surrounds - The town is a thriving agricultural centre, concentrating on dairy, wheat, grapes, peas, potatoes and sheep farming. There are several industries, including a textile factory, basket weavery, clothing factory and some light engineering shops.

An Ostrich Farm - For many years the Westcoast Ostrich Show Ranch has been offering a unique experience to visitors of the Western Cape.

The ranch stocks a variety of ostrich species and other birds, which include, the Westcoast white ostrich, dwarf ostriches, black-neck ostriches, emus, rheas and peacocks. The highlight of the trail is the ostrich show, where each member of the tour has the opportunity to sit on a live ostrich, stand on an ostrich egg, feed an ostrich, all with the stunning backdrop of Table Mountain. Tea and coffee is included.
