University at Buffalo have developed a new tool for transmitting physical touch
to the virtual world.

Their virtual clay sculpting system enables users to replicate in real time on
a personal computer the physical act of sculpting a block of clay or other
malleable material. The resulting 3-D electronic shape shown on the computer
screen then can be fine-tuned for product design using standard computer-aided
design/modeling software.

"This technology will give product designers, or even artists, a tool that will
allow them to touch, shape and manipulate virtual objects just as they would

Newswise - 11 Jul 04 ?? Four Drury physics students invented a cylindrical
robot that behaves like a cat landing on its feet after falling upside down.
Like a cat, the robot rotates without pushing off something to give itself ???
angular momentum.??? It does this by changing the rotational inertia of parts
of its body while rotating them relative to each other.

Understanding the concepts involved in a cat?? s free fall is a very different
thing from cranking out the equations. The Drury students took Newton's laws of
motion and applied them to rotation. Once they understood how the different
parts of their robot were interacting, the theory behind it became an exercise
in mathematics.

Gregory Ojakangas, assistant professor of physics at Drury, said the students??

Spiraling glass fibers provide new way to control behavior of light.

shapes, researchers have created unique structures that can precisely filter,
polarize or scatter light. Compatible with standard fiber optic lines, these
hair-like structures may replace bulky components in sensors, gyroscopes and
other devices.

While researchers are still probing the unusual properties of the new fibers,
tests show the strands impart a chiral, or ???handed,??? character to light by
polarizing photons according to certain physical properties.

"Artificial muscles" have been made from millions of carbon nanotubes.

Like natural muscles, providing an electrical charge causes the individual
fibers to expand and the whole structure to move. However, any application of
this work in replacing biological muscles is "nearer the dream factory than
reality". The real benefit of the breakthrough may come in generating energy
from ocean waves.

Using a common laptop computer and a sophisticated head-mounted projection
device, students at the University of Washington have created a system to help
people with poor vision navigate around stationary objects.
The Wearable Low Vision Aid (WLVA) is the first portable device to draw
attention to obstacles using an illuminated, vibrating crystal that projects a
warning icon-a raster image much like a television's-onto the user's retina.
The system was built entirely by graduate and undergraduate students over the
past four years under the direction of Eric Seibel, research assistant
professor for mechanical engineering at the Human Interface Technology
Laboratory at UW. The team unveiled the latest prototype on May 27, at the
Annual Society for Information Display Conference in Seattle, WA

THE PLAINS, Va., May 23 /PRNewswire/ --
Three ninth graders from Penn Manor, Lancaster, PA, today claimed the honor of
first place in the world's largest and most challenging model rocketry contest.
The team achieved a perfect score when their custom-built rocket soared to
exactly 1,250 feet. The winners of the second annual Team America Rocketry
Challenge, Cam Aument, Benjamin Raush, and Bob O'Connor, will share a $60,000
prize pool with ten other teams listed below.

U.S. Senator Michael B. Enzi (R-WY), author Homer Hickam, the original "rocket
boy" who inspired the movie "October Sky," NASA astronauts Jay Apt and Charlie
Walker, and NASA associate administrators Craig Steidle and Adena Loston were

SANTA FE - New Mexico has been selected to host a competition to achieve the
first privately funded manned space flight, Gov. Bill Richardson announced
Monday.

The governor said the state won over Florida, California and Oklahoma to host
the X Prize Cup. The contest calls for launching a manned craft to 62.5 miles
above the Earth, which is generally considered the edge of space, twice within
two weeks. The craft must be able to carry three people.

The X Prize competition will give $10 million to the first company or person to
successfully launch the craft.

Tiny Robot Walker Made From DNA

Scientists have created a microscopic walking robot using only the building
blocks of life: DNA. The tiny walker is only 10 nanometres long and has been
described as a major step forward in nanotechnology.
A New York University team created the robot using DNA legs that move along a
footpath, which is also based on DNA.
The legs move by detaching themselves from the footpath, moving along it and
then reattaching themselves, New Scientist reports.
DNA is an ideal material to build the robot from, because DNA chains easily
pair up.
