Greetings from The Luggage Store The Luggage Store Annex 1007 Market (@6th) 509 Ellis @ Leavenworth Cohen Alley - GreenLab - Tenderloin National Forest 415. 255 5971 www.luggagestoregallery.org Opens Friday May 9, 2008, 6-8pm KICK OUT THE JAMS @ luggage store, 1007 Market St. SF Gallery Hours: Wed-Saturday, 12-5pm organized by CHRIS DUNCAN + GRIFFIN McPARTLAND featuring work by artists featured in the current edition of "Hot and Cold" featuring work by: Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough, Amanda Eicher, Chris Taggart, Bill Dunlap, Christopher Robin Duncan, Ryan Jacob Smith, Julianna Bright, The Golden Bears, Paul Schiek, William Swanson, Jason Jagel, Butt Johnson, Colter Jacobsen, Tucker Nichols, Andy Vogt, Glen Baldridge, Chris Corales, Ernest Burgos, Griffin McPartland, Paul Wackers, Hisham Akira Bharocha, Jen Smith, Jeremy & Claire Weiss and Chris Pew This group show features artists whose work is featured in the latest edition of the artist produced?zine, "Hot and Cold." Selected artists were chosen "organically," by?Duncan and McPartland and each artists' work varies in artistic discipline and/or practice. Several artists will be creating new work for the show including (but not limited to): Christopher Taggart Color Photographs, Super Glue A well-used softball was acquired from the trunk of a friends car. The surface of the softball was then systematically divided into about 494 small numbered triangles using pencil and colored pens. The triangles progressively change in size across the surface of the softball. Each triangle was then photographed so that it approximately filled the frame of the camera. These 494 photographs were then printed as standard 4x6 snapshots. Amanda Eicher Site specifc "corner work," made from drywall. The drywall shell would roughly take the form of a Rwandan king’s house, a conical hut often used for entertaining. Andy Vogt Vogt will build a large lath (think plaster and lath) sculpture. the lath comes from old houses and apartments in the city that are being renovated; based in geometry and perspective. Hisham will create a site specific wall mural. Chris Duncan will present a monolith (roughly 9ftx4ftx2ft) work made out of paint and string scraps. Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough Duct tape paintings baesd on the NYTimes and Internet media gossip pages. That Hideous Strength is an ongoing audio & performance project of sound artist, non-musician Benjamin Tinker. Since 1999, Tinker has utilized his experience as a audio engineer and his fondness for vintage synths to create sound worlds that function as an extension from his training & background as a visual artist, and long time enthusiast of all things sonic. Assisted by a revolving door of an eclectic mix of electric & acoustic musicians, fellow non-musicians & spoken word artists, That Hideous Strength maintains a fresh mix of music, sounds, voice, improvisation & composition, both live & in the studio. MAY 15, 2008 8pm 'unknown white male' bass clarinet, flutes and saxes 9pm Animal Vegetable Television?Ron Chornow - Conga, Djembe, Doumbek, Pegasus Metallophone, Found Objects, Clarinet?Gary Schwantes-Saxes, Electric Guitar, Bamboo Flutes, Loops/Electronics Gary Schwantes has toured and recorded 2 CDs with North Carolina based Hip Bones. He is founder of Ultra World X-tet, and has performed with S.F. Guzheng Music Society, Klezmania, Pam Tillis, Lou Harrison, Allen Ginsberg, John Cipolina and Hank Ballard. He has composed music and done sound design for Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company, Fisher-Price, Mattel, Broderbund, Fujitsu, Mickey Hart, Craig Baldwin, Dimensions Dance Theater, ACT, and S.F. Legion of Honor Museum among others and released a CD with Chinese composer Gang Situ. www.garyschwantes.com Ron Chornow has been a percussionist for over 20 years and recently has added the clarinet. He is a veteran of many Punk, Industrial and Alternative Bands such as Forms of Things, Samsara, Color Failure, Dinosaur Lullaby, Lots of Trees, New Assault and Krank. In addition to traditional percussion instruments, Ron likes to create unusual sounds with objects originally intended for other purposes.??"Animal, vegetable, television. These are some of the basic elements we use to create and inform our music, as well as 3 staples of our daily diet. Given this Input, experience has shown that our expected Output encompasses noise constructions, delicate sustained melodic textures, and urban tribal improv."
