Write for Passion; Promote for Money!
In most literary circles, writing to make money is a deadly sin. Literary types would rather give away their first born than admit that they want to make a living from their profession. First of all, most don’t believe it is a profession, but some kind of skill like fixing fences. The thought process makes it a profession with predictable outcome. Writing is a profession while those to show it to the public think of it as some hapless pastime that anyone can do, and certainly isn’t worth attacking their bottom line.
I am a living, breathing witness that a good writer can be compared to a doctor, lawyer or Indian Chief. Writing is, no matter how naturally gifted the writer, a passion that takes study and practice. Many “get-it-quick” claimants say you can learn to write overnight, and I hate to disappoint you, but it takes effort. It takes desire, perseverance, vision, and passion. One needs a course of study— www.urbanclassicbooks.com
The course of study should be directed at the niche the writer is interested in—like some people get a Certification of Business Management that teaches the basics of business, while others get a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA), a more in-depth study of business. Writers are no different. When the course is finished, the public should pay you a decent, professional wage, comparable to an accountant, teacher, nurse, doctor, lawyer. Writelink3@yahoo.com
But no! The Writing Abusers offer magazine copies for thousands of words the writer has agonized over for hours and sometimes days. Those high-tower CEO’s never think how much it took to conceive, write and polish that article, time that could have earned enough money to purchase clothing, put gas in the car, and buy baby food. The capitalists don’t see the genius of creating visible, clear images out of words, or capturing the imagination of nations. That a profession writer deserves $25 an hour, $300 a day, or .50 cents a word. Now it is left to the writer to train his or her buyer to recognize how much it takes to pump the life of America into his newspaper, magazine, or publishing company. After all, the writer knows how to paint the faces of a nation, shape the ideas of the world, are the spokespersons for business and government. He should not be the lowest paid professional in the world.
How are writers supposed to eat without money? Well, let me share this secret with you: Build a portfolio of community businesses that will hire you to write speeches, flyers, brochures, ad copy, memoirs, and textbooks. They pay very well. Also, you can write, publish and sell your own content. If hundreds of writers, such as Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen, sold millions of Chicken Soup for the Soul, you can do it too.
