Sex In The Sanctuary

Sex In The Sanctuary is a love story, even though some of the events portrayed will have you wondering what’s love got to do with it. It’s a story of romance and relationships; of friendships and forgiveness, of pain and pleasure.

At the heart of the story are two couples, the Montgomerys and the Brooks, both pastors and wives. Derrick and Vivian Montgomery have been married 15 years. Theirs is working; the love still flowing as strongly as it began. Derrick is the successful founding pastor of charismatic Kingdom Citizen’s Christian Center in Los Angeles, a modern, growing congregation of 5,000. Along with their two children and faithful members like Mother Moseley, Brother Clyde, minister of music Darius Crenshaw and oh-so-fine associate minister Cy Taylor, the church runs like a well-oiled machine.

But even well-oiled machines clang every now and then. Enter Millicent Sims, the well-educated, beautiful and faithful church administrator who has “heard from the Lord” and believes one of her fellow members is her husband. Yes, the oh-so-fine Cy Taylor. She will not stop until God’s word comes to pass. Needless to say, there’s a lot to this story and how does it end? Well, let’s just say before it’s over, a bunch of KCCC members will be trying to hear from God on the matter.

Almost 2,000 miles away, in Overland Park, KS, are King and Tai (pronounced “tie”) Brook, pastor and first lady of Mount Zion Progressive Baptist Church. After four children and 20 years, their marriage is teetering on the brink of collapse. King has been unfaithful in the past and a new, fiery church member, Hope Jones, has Tai thinking the past may be coming back to haunt her again.

Unlike the others though, that she excused and forgave for one reason or another, this one is different. Tai is tired. She’s tired of perpetrating, tired of turning the other cheek, and with the children older and her inner faith stronger, she feels it may be time to cut her losses and move on. She’s reviewing her options and for the first time, divorce is one of them.

But not if Mama Max has anything to say about it. Maxine Brook is King’s mother and Tai’s ever supportive mama-in-law. She’s weathered King’s infidelities with Tai, and still believes “till death do us part” means just that. She also believes in the power of prayer, and doesn’t think some well placed verbal kicks in her crazy son’s “be-mind” would hurt either. She’s sympathetic to Tai’s situation, having dealt with similar issues early in her own marriage to King’s father, the Reverend Doctor Pastor Bishop Overseer Mister Stanley Obadiah Meshach Brook, Jr.

Like Kingdom Citizens, Mount Zion has its “special” people in the congregation. There are two women who have been members since before King was born; Elsie Wanthers and Margie Stokes, known in whispered circles as “Sistah Almighty” and “Sistah Alrighty” respectively. Nothing happens at Mount Zion to which they don’t have an opinion on as well as know about in the most intimate details.

Two couples, two journey’s one God. Is He enough to keep the Montgomery’s marriage faithful and to put the Brooks’ union back together? Is He talking to Millicent or is Millicent talking to herself? Does he look past the mischief of Sistahs Almighty and Alrighty and into theirs hearts that, when all is said and done, are pretty big? Can he hear and answer Hope’s prayer? The twists and turns of this page-turner will leave the reader believing this truth: No matter how crazy life looks, with God, all things are possible.
