Earth Day, a brief history.
In September 1969, at a conference in Seattle, Washington, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on the environment. Senator Nelson first proposed the nationwide environmental protest to thrust the environment onto the national agenda.” "It was a gamble," he recalls, "but it worked." Each year the April 22 Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
Check with your local community leaders to learn what Earth Day activities are planned for your community. Participate in these activities and let your community leaders know that protecting the environment is important to you. If your local community does not have any activities planned, volunteer to organize an event where you live. Learn more about how you can lessen the impact you and your family have on the environment. Change one or more personal habits.
- Buy Organic! Doing so helps the earth and the environment
- Consider creating a carpool with coworkers or other parents who live in or near your neighborhood to reduce the amount you use your vehicle
- Ride your bike or walk when going on short trips
- Shut off lights and appliances, such as TVs, when you leave the room
- Consider composting yard waste instead of sending it to a landfill
- Take advantage of your community's recycling programs, or start one if your community does not have such a program in place
- The possibilities are endless, so use your imagination!
