EDITOR??™S TEA ======================================================= Welcome to the premiere issue of Blessed Health ??“ The Ezine! We hope you enjoy and benefit from what you read here. Are you wondering who??™s writing this thing? I??™m glad you asked! That would be me, Belinda Y. Hughes, 39 years old, Louisiana-licensed and Texas registered massage therapist and certified yoga instructor of over 14 years??™ experience. My body, mind, heart and soul have survived a breakup gone seriously bad (aka domestic violence), four rear-end auto accidents in a three-year period (none my fault), a drive-by shooting (directed at a neighbor, but my home and car took the most damage), Hurricane Rita and countless other stresses from working in many industries and life in general. My survival of all this is in no small part due to my Creator??™s will and might and my applying what I learned in my natural healthcare career. I have utilized the traditional medical system for some things, but tend to rely on them only for emergency care, at which they excel. I have relied most on my Higher Power, massage therapy, chiropractic, yoga, meditation, acupuncture, herbs and vitamins and more in the infinite variety that is called alternative and natural healthcare. Recently, concerning the health of my family members and friends, I am learning more about integrated medicine, which blends the best of both the traditional and natural healthcare systems. I plan to share any news I find that could be useful to you, your family and friends in the hopes that all will benefit somehow, if only by having the knowledge handy and some idea of where to find the contact information when something comes up in your lives. And maybe I??™ll learn something along the way as well. Here??™s to us! --- Belinda Y. Hughes http://belinda-y-hughes.tripod.com/ Author_Belinda@yahoo.com ======================================================= 2. Massage Therapy Helps Kids with Hurricane Stress ======================================================= A 1996 study conducted by the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami concluded that massage therapy was more effective than videos in relieving post-Hurricane Andrew anxiety and depression in children. The results, published in the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, indicated that those children who received therapeutic massage as part of the research study were more relaxed, happier, less anxious and their relief lasted longer than those who watched videos. http://www.miami.edu/touch-research/index.html (Post-Traumatic Stress entry) Field, T., Seligman, S., Scafidi, F., & Schanberg, S. (1996). Alleviating posttraumatic stress in children following Hurricane Andrew. Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, 17, 37-50. --- Belinda Y. Hughes http://belinda-y-hughes.tripod.com/ Author_Belinda@yahoo.com ======================================================= 3. Can a Spoonful of Garlic Help Your Medicine Go Down? ======================================================= A study sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine is now accepting volunteers for research on how garlic supplements affect the body??™s breakdown and delivery of medication. Participants should be between 18-45 years of age, be able to read and understand English, and have a body mass index (BMI) between 20-32. DO NOT apply if you: are pregnant or breastfeeding; use herbal medicines other than oral contraceptives; are allergic or sensitive to any of the drugs that will be used in the medication cocktails or the garlic supplements; have a history of cardiopulmonary, liver, kidney or endocrine disease; or eat vegetables with a high allium content, including garlic, shallots, leeks, and chives, on a daily basis.
