I don't know about you, but the words "what's for dinner" burn in my ears. Even if I know what I'm preparing for that evening, I always answer "Food". Then I normally get the question, "What kind of food?" to which I reply, "Good food."
I'm not quite sure what it is about that question that bothers me so much. But in light of that question, I've decided to share some tips and techniques that I use to make that question a little easier to stomach. Although you've probably heard these tips in one form or another, it never hurts to be reminded. It was even a good learning process for me just writing this newsletter, reminding me of things that I have done in the past to make meal planning easier! Plan your week - we all hate hearing this one. Plan a week of meals at a time. It takes a little extra time at the start of the week, but it can truly save so much time and money throughout the week. By planning ahead of time, you'll eliminate those last minute grocery trips which usually cost you more because you purchase more than what you went for. You'll eliminate the last minute decisions, which often lead to fast food or pizza delivery. And I don't know about you, but at the beginning of the week when I already know what we're eating on Friday, I feel organized and ready to tackle the week, not having to worry about answering the ever burning question. For weekly menu ideas (with grocery lists!) see the Member's Only page. Keep certain items in stock - I find that a well stocked pantry keeps my mind at ease. By keeping certain foods in my cupboards and my refrigerator at all times, there are family favorites that I always know I have the ingredients for. If I run out, I immediately write the item down on my post it note grocery list that is stuck to my fridge door so I know I'll get it the next time I'm at the store. Check out the pantry items I suggest you have for making most of my recipes. Keep "easy meal" fixings - I usually try to have what I like to call "easy meal" fixings for those nights I haven't planned ahead and don't have energy to make a decision. Jarred pizza sauce, packaged pizza crust (just add water), and mozzarella cheese. Noodles and jarred spaghetti sauce. Canned or packaged soups (check out some great soups at ED Soups). Eat out, but in - Taking 4 kids to a restaurant is often more tiring than making a meal at home. However, we all know that there are days that you just don't want to cook. On those days, rather than spend the extra money (on drinks, appetizers, and desserts you'd buy if eating at the restaurant) order takeout and have a restaurant meal at home.
