CAPTAIN JACK LOOTS THE BIG GREEN OGRE

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" hauled in
$142.1 million for best Memorial Day weekend debut,
capping a huge month that puts Hollywood on track for
record summer business.

Disney's third "Pirates" adventure fell short of
breaking the best 3-day opening ever, the $151.1
million haul for Sony's "Spider-Man 3" just 3 weeks
earlier.

Yet "At World's End" cruised past last year's record
for best four-day Memorial Day opening, $122.9 million
for "X-Men: The Last Stand."

Compared to its predecessor in the "Pirates" movies,
the $115.1 million that "At World's End" drew from
Friday to Sunday was well behind the $135.6 million
premiere last summer of "Pirates of the Caribbean:
Dead Man's Chest," the second-biggest debut ever.

Chuck Viane, Disney's head of distribution, said "At
World's End" had been a longshot to break top
box-office records.

The movie runs 2 hours, 47 minutes, 15 minutes longer
than "Dead Man's Chest" and a half an hour longer than
"Spider-Man 3." That limited the number of screenings
theaters could fit in.

"Dead Man's Chest" and "Spider-Man 3" also opened amid
lighter competition, while "At World's End" was up
against "Spider-Man 3" and DreamWorks's "Shrek the
Third."

"This is probably the most competitive Memorial
weekend ever if not one of the most competitive
weekends all time. It speaks volumes for how well we
did," Viane said. "Obviously, we fell short of the 3-
day record of 'Spidey.' Everything's really obvious
and really good."

Adding in $14 million from Thursday night previews
before its official Friday release, "At World's End"
had taken in $156.1 million domestically.

The movie also grossed $245 million internationally
since Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $401
million in a matter of days.

The movie picks up where "Dead Man's Chest" left off,
with Johnny Depp's pirate Jack Sparrow consigned to
Davy Jones' locker and his old associates embarking on
a rescue mission.

"At World's End" took over the top spot at the box
office from "Shrek the Third," which slipped to No. 2
with $69.1 million, raising its domestic total to
$219.4 million. "Spider-Man 3" came in third with $18
million, putting its domestic total at $307.6 million.

The weekend's only other new wide release, Lionsgate's
thriller "Bug," had a so-so opening, coming in at No.
4 with $4.2 million. Directed by William Friedkin
("The Exorcist"), the movie stars Ashley Judd as a
waitress who takes up with a drifter and is drawn into
his delusional conspiracy theories.

The combination of "At World's End," "Shrek the Third"
and "Spider-Man 3" lifted Hollywood to a record
Memorial Day weekend with overall revenues of $265
million, topping the previous high of $247 million set
in 2004.

For the year, revenues are at $3.6 billion, 6.4
percent ahead of last year's, according to Media By
Numbers. Factoring in higher ticket prices, movie
admissions are up 2.6 percent.

The rise in movie attendance leaves the industry in
good shape for summer, which has an unusually strong
lineup that includes "Harry Potter and the Order of
the Phoenix," "Transformers," "Ocean's Thirteen," "The
Bourne Ultimatum" and "The Simpsons Movie."

"Summer ain't over," said Paul Dergarabedian,
president of Media By Numbers, who predicted record
summer revenue topping $4 billion. "You've got a
record number of people in theaters seeing all the
trailers and marketing materials for these upcoming
films. I've never seen a summer so well positioned."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Monday at
U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By
Numbers:

1. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," $142.1
million.

2. "Shrek the Third," $69.1 million.

3. "Spider-Man 3," $18 million.

4. "Bug," $4.2 million.

5. "Waitress," $4 million.

6. "28 Weeks Later," $3.3 million.

7. "Disturbia," $2.4 million.

8. "Georgia Rule," $2.38 million.

9. "Fracture," $1.6 million.

10. "Wild Hogs," $1.4 million.

any other person through 6 or fewer relationships,
because it's a small world. Through this web site, you
can learn about and support the charities of

Have you a pattern with the month of May. We started
the month with the Kentucky Derby. So suggested some
of my favorite horse movies. Now, we are wrapping up
the month with the Indy 500. Here is a recap of the
race to get you started.

DARIO WINS RAIN-SOAKED & CUT-SHORT WACKY 500

The winner crossed the famed strip of bricks in a
downpour, his high-powered machine poking along at
about 40 mph. Heck, Dario Franchitti barely beat the
tow truck lugging a teammate's battered car. The
Indianapolis 500 seemed like 2 races, with a 3-hour
intermission and not enough daylight to get in the
final 85 miles. Franchitti's crew relied on the
weather radar as much as the speedometer, which turned
out to be the best move. When the lead pack made its
last round of pit stops under caution, the Scotsman
remained on the track. Eleven laps later, it was over.
Another line of storms moved in, soaking a track that
had been dried twice. Franchitti coasted across the
line for the biggest win of his career, while wife
Ashley Judd run barefoot in rain-soaked summer dress
to congratulate him. He led 34 laps, averaging 151.744
mph, far off the record 185.81 mph by Arie Luyendyk in
1990. "Our roll of the dice proved to be the lucky
one," Franchitti said. "I made a couple of good
restarts, and the rain came." As the dark clouds drew
closer, crew chief John Anderson told him, "The rain's
eight blocks away." "Come on!" Franchitti said. "I was
just hoping it would start soon."

Yes, you guessed it -- here are some of my favorite
auto racing movies. Okay, some are not about racing.
But they all have fast cars with a need for speed. A
click of our seat belts and we'll be off to the races.

KNIGHT RIDER

When a police officer is nearly killed, he given the
name of Michael Knight, and an intelligent partner in
the form of a souped-up sports car named KITT. Aired
on NBC from 1982-1986. All 4 seasons are available.

CARS (2006)

Lightning McQueen, a hotshot rookie race car, finds
himself in the Route 66 town of Radiator Springs. Here
he discovers that life is about the journey and not
the finish line.

SIX PACK (1982)

Kenny Rogers plays a stock car racer attempting a
comeback. His pit crew is 6 orphans who just happen to
be skilled mechanics.

HERBIE RIDES AGAIN (1974)

This 1974 sequel has the personable and powerful
Volkswagen "Bug" help elderly Hayes save her property
from an evil real estate tycoon.

TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY (2006)

Ricky Bobby is a racing sensation whose "win at all
costs" approach has made him a national hero. He and
loyal partner and childhood friend, Cal, thrill their
fans by finishing in the top spots.

THE DUKES OF HAZZARD (2005)

The Duke boys often find themselves on the wrong side
of the law, leading the sheriff's department on some
truly wild goose chases in their General Lee.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (2001)

Dominic, who lives off of the adrenaline of street car
racing, takes Brian under his wing. Dom's sister sees
something she likes in Brian, too. Trouble is, neither
realize he's an undercover cop.

THE CANNONBALL RUN (1981)

A group of oddballs compete in a wild and illegal
cross-country car race.

Perhaps this rusty old jalopy can think of another
movie theme for the month of June. Actually, I have
several already. Not too shabby for an old geezer.

Patsy come through for us with a gody!

BRAIN TEST

This is a "test" to be taken with a grain of salt. And
once you're
done, it's great to pass along!

Exercise of the brain is as important as exercise of
the muscles. As we
grow older, it's important that we keep mentally
alert. The saying, "If
you don't use it, you'll lose it," also applies to the
brain. So, below
is a private way to gauge your loss or non-loss of
intelligence. So -
are you losing it or still "with it"?

First, get out a piece of paper and a pen or pencil.
Now, take a deep
breath, relax, clear your mind, and answer the
following questions.

Do not look past the question before answering,
because that's where
the answers are!

The Questions:
1. What do you put in a toaster?

Answer: You put bread in a toaster. If you said
"toast," then maybe you
should give up now and go do something else. If you
said, "Bread," then
go to Question #2.

2. Say "silk" five times. Then, spell "silk" three
times. Then, answer
this question: what do cows drink?

Answer: Cows drink water. If you said "milk", maybe
you shouldn't
attempt the next question. Your brain is obviously
over-stressed. However,
if you said "water", please proceed to question #3.

3. If a red house is made from red bricks,
and a blue house is made from blue bricks,
and a pink house is made from pink bricks,
and a black house is made from black bricks,
what is a green house made from?

Answer: A greenhouse is made from glass. If you said,
"green bricks,"
what the devil are you still doing reading these
questions? But, if you
said "glass", then proceed to Question #4.

4. In 1980, a plane was flying at 20,000 feet over
Germany. Germany at
the time, was politically divided into two sections:
West Germany and
East Germany. During the flight, two of the plane's
engines failed. The
pilot, realizing that the last remaining engine was
also failing,
decided to attempt an emergency landing.
Unfortunately, the third engine
failed before he had time to attempt the emergency
landing, and the plane
crashed smack in the middle of "no man's land",
between East Germany
and West Germany. Where would you bury the survivors?
East Germany, West
Germany or in the middle of "no man's land"?

Answer: You don't bury survivors. If you said ANYTHING
else, please
promise yourself that you will NEVER try and rescue
anyone from a plane
crash. Your efforts would not be appreciated. If you
said, "you don't
bury survivors", then proceed to question #5.

5. If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60 of a degree
every minute, how
many degrees will the hour hand move in one hour?

Answer: One degree. If you said, "360 degrees" or
anything other than
"one degree", you are to be congratulated on getting
this far, but you
are obviously out of your league. Put down your paper,
turn in your pen
or pencil, and exit the room. Everyone else proceed to
the final
question.

Note: Use of a calculator for the following question
is forbidden.

6. You are driving a bus from London to Milford Haven
in Wales.
In London, 17 people board the bus.
In Reading, six people get off the bus, and nine
people get on.
In Swindon, two people get off the bus and four people
get on.
In Cardiff, 11 people get off the bus and 16 people
get on.
In Swansea, three people get off the bus and five
people get on.
In Carmathen, six people get off the bus and three
people get on.
The bus finally arrives at Milford Haven.
What was the name of the bus driver?

Answer: Oh, for crying out loud, don't you remember?
YOU are the driver
of the bus!!

Now, pass this "test" along to all of your friends and
hope they do better than you did!

Thanks again, Patsy

CANNES: FILM FESTIVAL STARS & STUNTS

George Clooney auctioned off a kiss. Bono wailed
"With or Without You" on the red carpet. And Jerry
Seinfeld dressed up like a bumblebee.

The 60th edition of Cannes was full of stunts and
celebrity - not to mention men on a mission, from the
"Ocean's Thirteen" crew's campaign for Darfur, to
Michael Moore's crusade to overhaul U.S. health care,
to Leo DiCaprio's save-the-environment message.

But the big news for moviegoers was the films - one of
the strongest lineups in years, full of moving
performances by women. When the curtain fell, the big
prize went to a small film by a director who didn't
have money to shoot it just six months ago.

Winning the top prize, the Palme d'Or, is "like a
fairy tale," Romanian director Cristian Mungiu said in
his acceptance speech.

Mungiu's film, "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," is a
gritty, realistic look at illegal abortion - just the
kind of movie Cannes critics are proud to champion.

"Cinema entertains, but cinema also makes us reflect
on the world," Jane Fonda said before handing Mungiu
the award. "And Cannes is a fragile balance between
these two realities."

The winning films were generally dark and somber, on
topics like death, mourning and loss. The jury led by
director Stephen Frears offered up some surprises.

The grand prize, Cannes' No. 2 award, went to a film
panned by critics - "Mogari No Mori" (The Mourning
Forest) by Naomi Kawase of Japan, about an elderly man
at a retirement home and a caretaker and their
attempts to overcome personal losses.

Both acting prizes went to actors who played
characters struggling with the deaths of loved ones -
Russia's Konstantin Lavronenko in "The Banishment" and
Jeon Do-yeon in South Korea's "Secret Sunshine."

The festival started light, with Norah Jones' acting
debut in Wong Kar-wai's "My Blueberry Nights," a sweet
look at modern love. Festival organizers perhaps
realized they needed to start on an upbeat note to
prepare critics for the heavy lineup ahead.

Cannes also invited big Hollywood movies, like
"Ocean's Thirteen" into the mix, screening them
outside the competition. Clooney joked, "This film is
a cry for peace in the world."

Seinfeld screened a half an hour of his DreamWorks
"Bee Movie." Afterward, he dressed up in a bee costume
and went flying over the beach on a cord.

Moore's "Sicko," his indictment of U.S. health care,
screened to raves, while DiCaprio's environment
documentary, "The 11th Hour," got a more muted
response. Neither were up for prizes.

Red carpet antics abounded. The "Ocean's Thirteen"
cast, including Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon,
delighted fans by signing autographs before they went
into the premiere. U2 played 2 songs on Cannes' red
steps before screening their documentary "U23D."

Two charity gala dinners on the sidelines brought
stars together for good causes. The "Ocean's Thirteen"
cast hosted dinner on a cruise ship to collect money
for refugees in Darfur, raising $9.2 million.

The next night, they showed up at a gala auction
dinner hosted by Sharon Stone to raise money for AIDS
research, bringing $7 million. Stone promised that
Clooney would throw in a kiss to who bid $350,000 for
a yacht vacation. Always the gentleman, he obliged.

CANNES: ROMANIAN FLICK IS TOP PICK

A film about illegal abortion in Romania beat 21
movies by well-known directors such as Quentin
Tarantino, Ethan and Joel Coen, and Wong Kar-wai to
win the top prize.

Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's low-budget film,
"4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days," depicts the horrors a
student goes through to ensure her friend can have a
secret abortion.

Mungiu, who was awarded the Palme d'Or by Jane Fonda,
said he didn't even have enough money to shoot the
film just 6 months ago. He hoped the win would inspire
other "small filmmakers from small countries."

"You don't necessarily need a big budget and big stars
to tell a story that everyone will listen to," said
Mungiu, the first Romanian to win Cannes' top prize.

The films shown at Cannes' 60th anniversary edition
ran the gamut of weighty subjects, from death and loss
to abortion and aging. The winners, announced by jury
president Stephen Frears, reflected darker themes.

Japanese director Naomi Kawase's "Mogari No Mori"
("The Mourning Forest") took the festival's grand
prize, the second-highest award. The film is about
struggling to overcome the deaths of loved ones.

The prize for best director went to Julian Schnabel
for "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly," based on a
memoir by a French magazine editor left paralyzed
after a stroke and wrote by blinking his eyelid.

The movie is Schnabel's third, after "Basquiat" and
"Before Night Falls."

The jury awarded a special prize to director Gus Van
Sant for "Paranoid Park," which depicts a teenage
skateboarder who accidentally kills a security guard.
Van Sant recruited untrained actors on MySpace and
shot the film in a few weeks.

Two films shared the jury prize: "Persepolis," Marjane
Satrapi's adaptation of her graphic novels about
growing up during and after Iran's 1979 Islamic
Revolution and "Stellet Licht" ("Silent Light"),
Carlos Reygadas' tale of forbidden love set among
Mennonite farmers of northern Mexico.

Acting honors went to Russia's Konstantin Lavronenko,
who played a troubled husband "The Banishment," a
drama about a couple whose marriage disintegrates.

The prize for best actress went to South Korea's Jeon
Do-yeon, who played a widow struggling to cope with
her husband's death in "Secret Sunshine."

German writer and director Fatih Akin's "The Edge of
Heaven," a German-Turkish tale of loss, mourning and
forgiveness, won the prize for best screenplay.

Several high-profile movies that screened at Cannes
were not in the running for prizes, including Michael
Moore's "Sicko," "Ocean's Thirteen" and "A Mighty
Heart."

The Coen brothers'"No Country for Old Men," a bloody,
dark tale about a ruthless killer in Texas, was hailed
by critics but snubbed by the jury. Other films up for
the top prize included Tarantino's "Death Proof,"
Wong's "My Blueberry Nights," and David Fincher's
"Zodiac."

In a big weekend for Romania, another film from the
country took honors in a secondary competition called
"Un Certain Regard." Director Cristian Nemescu died in
a car crash last year at age 27, leaving his
"California Dreamin'" incomplete. Jurors had initially
decided not to judge the film, about U.S. soldiers in
a Romanian village, but changed their minds when they
saw it.

On Saturday night, festival organizers screened the
late Henry Fonda's "Twelve Angry Men," then surprised
his daughter, Jane Fonda, with a special lifetime
achievement award at a gala dinner.

Festival President Gilles Jacob recounted Fonda's
career highs and lows, including her trip to North
Vietnam in 1972, joking that he never thought the
festival would honor someone who had been "spied on
and hounded by the FBI."

Fonda (69), visibly moved, put the focus back on her
father, responding in French, "For my father, his
films were his way of representing justice, quality
and democracy." She added her hope that one day, "the
United States will again become the country that he
stood for."

CANNES: FESTIVAL CLOSES WITH LIGHT COMEDY

After a 12-days of weighty films, Cannes came to a
close with "Days of Darkness" - despite its title, a
comedy. French-Canadian filmmaker Denys Arcand, who
won best foreign language Oscar in 2004 for "The
Barbarian Invasions" has a thing for over-the-top
titles.

"They're big titles, and the films are small films,"
he joked. "It started when I did 'The Decline of the
American Empire.' I did this film which was basically
about sex... and stuff like that, and we didn't know
what to call it ...

"I came up with the title and everybody said, that's
ridiculous, and it worked perfectly," he said.

"Days of Darkness" tells the story of Jean-Marc, a
civil servant with a house in suburbia, a boring job,
a high-powered wife who does not listen to him and 2
daughters who do not look up from their video game
when he walks into the room.

The one thing he does have is an active fantasy life.

Jean-Marc dreams of a gorgeous actress paying him
visits in the shower. When his tough but sexy boss
berates him, he imagines her being carried off by men
in loincloths. He dreams of himself as an author, a
Roman emperor and a prince charming.

This closes the trilogy that started with "Decline"
and continued with "Invasions," a merry & melancholy
story of a dying man's reunion with his estranged son.

Though "Days of Darkness" criticizes the isolation and
blandness of modern life, and though the main
character's aging mother is dying, it is a lighter
film than "Invasions." Arcand says it is the first
time he has included elements of slapstick comedy.

The film screened out of competition. Arcand points
out that comedies tend to be snubbed on awards nights
anyway.

"Somehow, juries or people who vote, take themselves
extremely seriously. Comedy ... says something about
the world: 'We are all ridiculous.' And people who
take themselves seriously don't want to hear that."

GMA: NEWMAN HAS RETIRED FROM ACTING

Paul Newman (82) says he's given up acting. "I'm not
able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would
want to," Newman told ABC's "Good Morning America."
"You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your
invention. So that's pretty much a closed book for
me." Newman, star of "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and
"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," added: "I've
been doing it for 50 years. That's enough." Newman
plans to focus on the Dressing Room, his restaurant in
Westport, Conn., and his Hole in the Wall Gang camps
for critically ill children. His Newman's Own food
products has raised $200 million for charity.
He was last seen - or heard, rather - as the voice of
Doc Hudson in the 2006 animated feature "Cars."

DIAZ ON TOUR 2 PROMOTE 'SHREK 3'

Fiona, the ogre princess in "Shrek the Third," is a
modern update of the classic fairy tale princess, says
Cameron Diaz. Fiona understands that "if you want
something to happen, you have to go out and do it
yourself," said Diaz. When Shrek sets off to find the
heir of the kingdom, Fiona is left to defend the
castle. She gets help from Snow White, Cinderella,
Rapunzel & Sleeping Beauty. "These are the princesses
we grew up on," Diaz added. "We get to keep our
princesses, and we get to modernize them." Justin
Timberlake, her former boyfriend, voices future King
Arthur. "I think he's great in the film," she said.
"He's so gifted." Diaz & Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of
DreamWorks SKG, are on a 3-week tour to promote the
movie in more than 10 cities in Asia and Europe.

MISS KAZAKHSTAN: 'BORAT' WAS JUST A JOKE

Miss Kazakhstan said her country is preparing its own
movie in response to "Borat." Gauhkar Rakhmetalieva, a
Miss Universe contestant, said her government is
filming the movie to show the nation's positive side.
She said "Borat" brought publicity to Kazakhstan and
there should be no hard feelings. "In the end we have
to understand that it was only a joke," Rakhmetalieva
said. "The advantage is that now our country is world
famous." Sacha Baron Cohen's "Borat: Cultural
Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation
of Kazakhstan" angered some for its portrayal of
Kazakhstan. The movie also poked fun at Americans.

BROSNAN HELPS SCHOOL CHILDREN IN HAWAII

Pierce Brosnan and wife, Keely, have donated $100,000
to help replace an unsafe playground at an elementary
school on Kauai, where they own a home. The money was
donated to Hawaii 3R's (Repair, Remodel and Restore
Hawaii's public schools), a nonprofit organization
that kicked in $47,800 for the project at Hanalei
Elementary School. "We were disheartened that the
playground equipment was condemned for so long, and we
wanted to find a way to help," the former James Bond
actor said. "We believe that play activities enhance
children's educational experiences, and these children
were missing out." Keely Brosnan was on the playground
planning committee. "We initially planned to donate
the money to the state, but we ran into some tape,"
she said. "We were fortunate to hear about Hawaii
3R's." The group has awarded 317 grants totaling $9.3
million to public schools for repair and maintenance
projects since 2001.

FOX SELLS STUDIO BUILT FOR 'TITANIC'

The studio built to stage the special effects for the
1997 "Titanic" is being sold. Twentieth Century Fox,
which developed the 46-acre oceanfront Baja Studios in
Rosarito, Mexico, has sold the facility to Baja
Acquisitions. The studio was built in 1996 and
included several enormous water tanks that were used
to film such large-scale projects as "Master and
Commander," "Pearl Harbor" and "Tomorrow Never Dies."
In 2000, the facility was expanded to lure more film
production and to serve as a museum and tourist
attraction. The studio has not served as home to any
major productions in recent years. Fox has extensive
production facilities in LA and Sydney, Australia.

SONY DEVELOPS FILM-THIN, FLEXIBLE DISPLAY

In the race for ever-thinner displays, Sony may have
developed one to beat them all - a razor-thin display
that bends like paper while showing full-color video.

Sony released video of the new 2.5-inch display
Friday. In it, a hand squeezes a display that is 0.3
millimeters, or 0.01 inch, thick. The display shows
color images.

Although flat-panel TVs are getting slimmer, a display
that's so thin it bends in a human hand marks a
breakthrough.

Sony said it has yet to decide on commercial products
using the technology.

"In the future, it could get wrapped around a lamppost
or a person's wrist, even worn as clothing," said Sony
spokesman Chisato Kitsukawa. "Perhaps it can be put up
like wallpaper."

Tatsuo Mori, an engineering and computer science
professor at Nagoya University, said some hurdles
remain, including making the display bigger, ensuring
durability and cutting costs.

But he said the display's pliancy is extremely
difficult to imitate with liquid crystal displays and
plasma display panels - the main display technologies
now on the market.

"To come up with a flexible screen at that image
quality is groundbreaking," Mori said. "You can drop
it, and it won't break because it's as thin as paper."

The display combines 2 technologies: Sony's organic
thin film transistor, which is required to make
flexible displays, and organic electroluminescent
display.

Other companies, including LG. Philips LCD and Seiko
Epson, are also working on a different "electronic
paper" technology, but Sony said the organic
electroluminescent display delivers better color
images and is more suited for video.

Sony President Ryoji Chubachi has said a film-like
display is a major technology his company is working
on to boost its status as a technological powerhouse.

In a meeting with reporters more than a year ago,
Chubachi boasted Sony was working on a technology for
displays so thin it could be rolled up like paper. He
predicted the world would stand up and take notice.

Some analysts have said Sony, which makes the Walkman
and PlayStation 3, had fallen behind rivals in
flat-panel technology, including Samsung of South
Korea and Sharp of Japan.

But Sony has been marking a turnaround under Chubachi
and Chief Executive Howard Stringer, the first
foreigner to head Sony, by reducing jobs, shuttering
unprofitable businesses and strengthening its flat TV
offerings.

That promised big change @ Adventureland Video for May
has been delayed. But things seem on track for June.
All of this will benefit Reel 2 Reel too.

In the end, I see this year as a turning point. To
good times ahead and an eventual successful online
revenue stream. Something that has been lacking.

Do we have a date this weekend? You know, pizza and a
movie for my birthday. Thanks, I will be waiting!

The end,
