Howdy Adventureland Friends: I hope you had a great Father's Day. My nephew took me to Sky-Vue Drive-in. Okay, this was our treat from Grandma. Anyway, we all had a great time. Fantastic Four: The Rise Of The Silver Surfer was better than expected. I hadn't been following this franchise. Koda Bear bubed with Michael's charector. Shrek The Third was our favorite. I had seen the first Shrek and Koda Bear loved the second Shrek. So we were eager to see #3 and look forward to #4. I recommend both movies. Shrek would likely be just as great at home. But, with most actioners, Fantastic Four really benefits from the big screen. +===================================+ Find your showtimes @ Adventureland http://advland.bravehost.com +===================================+ <> <> <> BOX OFFICE <> <> <> +===================================+ 'SILVER SURFER' RIDES BEST BOX OFFICE WAVE The 20th Century Fox sequel "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" debuted at No. 1 with $57.4 million in sales, slightly surpassing the $56.1 million opening of "Fantastic Four" 2 years ago. Among other new wide releases, a favorite teen detective had trouble finding an audience as the Warner Bros. "Nancy Drew" premiered with a $7.1 million to finish at No. 7. Opening in narrower release was Weinstein Co. thriller "DOA: Dead or Alive," an adaptation of the martial-arts video game that pulled in just $232,000. Playing in 505 theaters, "DOA" averaged a paltry $460 a cinema, compared to $14,499 in 3,959 theaters for "Fantastic Four" and $2,732 in 2,612 locations for "Nancy Drew." Last weekend's No. 1 movie, George Clooney and Brad Pitt's "Ocean's Thirteen," fell to No. 2 with $19.1 million. The Warner Bros. casino caper raised its 10-day total to $69.8 million, putting it on track to become the franchise's third $100 million hit. Hollywood revenues slipped for the third straight weekend. The top 12 movies took in $138.8 million, down 4 percent from the same weekend last year, when "Cars," "Nacho Libre" and "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" led with a combined $86 million. The industry had a blockbuster May with "Spider-Man," "Shrek" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels, but big films are not holding their audiences after huge opening weekends. After a surge early this year, attendance has slipped to a fraction ahead of 2006, diminishing prospects of a record summer that many analysts had predicted. "We've seen our advantage over last year slowly being chipped away," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "A lot of films are doing what these big summer movies do, open big and drop off fast." The new "Fantastic Four" reunites the superheroes, played by Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans. This time, the comic-book heroes join forces with archenemy Dr. Doom (Julian McMahon) to take down Silver Surfer, an emissary leading a planet-destroying entity to Earth. The studio and filmmakers toned down the action so the sequel could earn a PG rating to broaden the audience to family viewers. The first "Fantastic Four" was rated PG-13. "A lot of the superhero comic-book movies are sort of geared toward being darker and edgier. We think 'Fantastic Four' is a more family friendly group of superheroes," said Chris Aronson, senior VP for distribution at 20th Century Fox. "We wanted to make sure to cast a wide net and go after the family audience, and it worked." Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday @ U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers: 1. "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" @ $57.4 million. 2. "Ocean's Thirteen" @ $19.1 million. 3. "Knocked Up" @ $14.5 million. 4. "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" @ $12 million. 5. "Surf's Up" @ $9.3 million. 6. "Shrek the Third" @ $9 million. 7. "Nancy Drew" @ $7.1 million. 8. "Hostel: Part II" @ $3 million. 9. "Mr. Brooks" @ $2.8 million. 10. "Spider-Man 3" @ $2.5 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ KNOCKED UP (2007) Allison Scott is an up-and-coming entertainment journalist whose 24-year-old life is on the fast track. Now, the town is going all out to prove it, joining 13 other Springfields from across the nation in a contest, with the winner hosting the big-screen premiere of "The Simpsons Movie" July 26. The public will choose the winner in a USA Today online vote. The competition is stiff. Springfield, Ill., has its own power plant, run by a man who looks a lot like Mr. Burns, head of the nuclear plant on "The Simpsons," said Tim Farley, executive director of the Illinois' Springfield Convention and Visitors' Bureau. The school is identical and the city is not far from Shelbyville, the town next to Homer Simpson's Springfield, he said. "We feel like Springfield has a lot of curious similarities," Farley said. But folks in Springfield, Ore., home state of "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening, always thought it was their Springfield on the show. "It was a shock, that we had to prove it," said Niel Laudati, community relations coordinator. Every Springfield in the nation was invited to take part, submitting a 3 to 5 minute video showcasing their towns. Some had a cow over the idea. Springfield, Minn., declined, saying it was nothing like the dysfunctional town on the TV show. As the June 28 submission deadline approaches, the Springfields aren't giving away many details, just upping the ante. "We just got Senator Kennedy to be in our Simpsons video," said David Horgan, producer of the effort in Springfield, Mass. "I can't give it away, but he's hilarious." Last week, more than 300 people showed up to be in the final scene of the Massachusetts entry. "We had a hair salon dyeing hair blue," said Azell Murphy Cavaan, community relations director. Illinois and Massachusetts got local input online for how to show their "Simpsons spirit." Oregon held a public meeting with the mayor. Companies volunteered their video-editing services, food and beverages. Vermont's Springfield planned to show off buildings with "Springfield" in them - the bank, movie theater -in a scene in which Homer (Tim Kavanaugh) runs through town chasing a big, pink, rolling doughnut. On Tuesday, 17-year-old volunteer cameraman Alex Campos filmed Homer charging after the doughnut through a Little League diamond and plowing into his son, Bart. The southeastern Vermont town's preparations went so far as to include a doughnut double - in case anything happened to the inflatable plastic pastry. Later they planned to film the final scene, in which Homer is chased by a mob into a movie theater. "We tried to keep within the spirit of the movie," said producer Brock Rutter, of the Vermont Film Commission, who also plays Bart. "Homer wrecking things and everything turning out in the end." The town doesn't plan to emphasize anything that might be offensive, said Patty Chaffee, head of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce. We're not "looking at it (as) being compared to. I think more for us it's a promotional piece, just getting our name out there." Voting ends July 9, with the winner announced the next day. The movie hits theaters July 27. http://www.usatoday.com http://www.simpsonsmovie.com/ http://www.springfieldvt.com/ http://www.springfield-il.com/ http://www.springfield-chamber.org/ +===================================+ <> <> <> DVD SHOWCASE <> <> <> +===================================+ Buy your favorite DVDs @ Adventureland http://psgoods.bravehost.com +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ +===================================+ <> <> <> COMING SOON <> <> <> +===================================+ June 26, 2007 SHOOTER (2007) Bob Lee Swagger is a former Marine Corps sniper who leaves the military when a mission goes bad. The 1941 Orson Welles classic was again rated the best movie ever by the American Film Institute. In CBS special "AFI's 100 Years ... 100 Movies - 10th Anniversary Edition," "Citizen Kane" held the same No. 1 billing it earned in the institute's first top-100 ranking in 1998. There were notable changes, though, with Martin Scorsese's 1980 "Raging Bull" bounding upward from No. 24 in 1998 to No. 4 on the new list and Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 "Vertigo" hurtling from No. 61 to No. 9 this time. Charles Chaplin's 1931 "City Lights" jumped from No. 76 to No. 11, while the 1956 John Ford-John Wayne Western "The Searchers" took the biggest leap, from No. 96 all the way to No. 12. "The ones that made the huge jumps are really, really fascinating," said Jean Picker Firstenberg, CEO @ AFI, which has done top-10 lists every year since 1998 showcasing the best in American cinema. "I'd like to think this entire series has had a real influence on what people think about a film like 'City Lights,' 'The Searchers,' 'Vertigo.' Gotten them talking about these films and going back to watch them again, and if they've never seen them, to go watch them for the first time." Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 "The Godfather" ranked No. 2, up one notch from 1998, switching places with Michael Curtiz's 1942 "Casablanca," which dipped from second-place to third. Both 1967's "The Graduate" and 1954's "On the Waterfront," which ranked Nos. 7 and 8 respectively in 1998, fell out of the top 10, "The Graduate" coming in at No. 17 and "On the Waterfront" finishing at No. 19. The other 5 films in the new top 10 also were among the original 10 best, though they shuffled positions: 1952's "Singin' in the Rain (No. 5 now, No. 10 in 1998), 1939's "Gone With the Wind" (No. 6 now, No. 4 in 1998), 1962's "Lawrence of Arabia" (No. 7 now, No. 5 in 1998), 1993's "Schindler's List" (No. 8 now, No. 9 in 1998) and 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" (No. 10 now, No. 6 in 1998). The top-100 were chosen from ballots sent to 1,500 filmmakers, actors, writers, critics and others in Hollywood from a list of 400 nominated movies, 43 of which came from the decade since the first list was compiled. Of those newer films, only 4 made the top-100: 2001's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (No. 50), 1998's "Saving Private Ryan" (No. 71), 1997's "Titanic" (No. 83) and 1999's "The Sixth Sense" (No. 89). Older films that did not make the cut on the 1998 list broke into the top-100 this time, led by Buster Keaton's 1927 "The General" at No. 18. Others included 1916's "Intolerance" (No. 49), 1975's "Nashville" (No. 59), 1960's "Spartacus" (No. 81), 1989's "Do the Right Thing" (No. 96) and 1995's "Toy Story" (No. 99). Some silent-era classics and other old films may have fared better this time because they are more readily available in good quality restorations in today's DVD age as opposed to the VHS days. Films that dropped out of the top-100 this time included 1965's "Doctor Zhivago," which had been No. 39 on the 1998 list; 1984's "Amadeus," which had been No. 53; 1977's "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," which had been No. 64; 1990's "Dances With Wolves," which had been No. 75; and 1927's "The Jazz Singer," which had been No. 90. "Close Encounters" director Steven Spielberg had the most films on the list with 5, while Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and Billy Wilder each had 4. James Stewart and Robert De Niro were the most-represented actors with 5 films apiece. In interviews for the special, filmmakers and others in Hollywood told AFI they loved the behind-the-scenes story of "Citizen Kane" as much as the film itself, said Bob Gazzale, who produced the AFI show. It was the first movie by Welles, who bucked studio and storytelling conventions to craft a landmark film about the rise and fall of a William Randolph Hearst-like newspaper publisher. The film was ahead of its time, a dark tale whose brooding design, murky lighting, overlapping dialogue and ripped-from-true-life Hearst connection created an unnerving sense of realism. "No one disputes it's a great American film, but what you hear from the great artists of our day is the love they have for this ideal of a young maverick making a movie like this, that a 25-year-old Orson Welles changed the fabric of cinema, and that that ideal still holds today of this jewel everybody reaches for," Gazzale said. While AFI officials have not decided if they will continue the annual lists in coming years, Firstenberg said the institute will do a new list of all-time best American films every 10 years as a guide to changing tastes in future decades. "With this new list, it became clearer the value of this program was to have 5 lists to chart rather than 1 50-year-old list," Gazzale said. "It's not only celebrating the films again and driving people to see them again, but we get to see what's gone up, what's gone down." http://www.afi.com American Film Institute's original 1998 list: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20070621/D8PSUOFO0.html American Film Institute's 2007 list of the top-100: http://apnews.excite.com/article/20070621/D8PSUNV80.html +===================================+ <> <> STEALS & DEALS <> <> +===================================+ TAKE A BITE OUT OF STEEP DVD PRICES! OSCARS Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will now allow more than 3 producers in rare circumstances. Sid Ganis said the change was among refinements in the rules for the 80th Academy Awards. They imposed a rule in 2000 that limited films to 3 producers who could claim statuettes. That led to bickering and lawsuits. The rules still say that "three or fewer producers who have performed the major portion of the producing functions" will be considered eligible, but a provision allows Producers Branch Executive Committee to "name any additional qualified producer" in "what it determines to be a rare and extraordinary circumstance." Another change involves defining an animated feature film as being 70+ minutes long. http://www.oscars.org/ SPIELBERG ENDORSES HILLARY 4 PRESIDENT Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton won the endorsement of film producer and director Steven Spielberg. "I've taken the time to familiarize myself with the impressive field of Democratic candidates and am convinced that Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate to lead us from her first day in the White House," Spielberg said in a statement. Spielberg has been a supporter and contributor to Clinton in the past, but his support wasn't always certain. He co-hosted a fundraiser for Obama with his DreamWorks partners David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg that brought in $1.3 million. Katzenberg is backing Obama, as is Geffen, a former Clinton ally turned critic. http://www.hillaryclinton.com/ http://clinton.senate.gov/ CENSORED 'PIRATES' SCREENED IN CHINA Chow Yun-Fat's time on the screen in "Pirates" had "been slashed in half by censors in China for vilifying and defacing the Chinese." The version released in China shows about 10 minutes of Chow's scenes compared with 20 minutes in the rest of the world. Chinese magazine, Popular Cinema, said the scenes were cut because of the negative images they showed. "The captain starring Chow is bald, his face heavily scarred, he also wears a long beard and has long nails, images still in line with Hollywood's old tradition of demonizing the Chinese," the magazine said. The film took in a record $1.3 million on its opening day in China, Walt Disney said. "They weren't quite ecstatic with how the Chinese pirate was portrayed," Anthony Marcoly, distribution chief at Walt Disney Studios, said earlier this week. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000334/ LOBBYIST INVITED 2 FREE 'SICKO' SCREENING Michael Moore is inviting lobbyists for the pharmaceutical and insurance industries to a free showing. Moore is running "Sicko" ads in Washington newspapers listing lobbyists and telling them they can attend an exclusive showing. "It only makes sense that the very people responsible for perpetrating this awful system on the American people should see the fruits of their labor," Moore said. "Without their hard work ensuring that insurance companies make billions denying care to their customers, we might actually have an effective system that guaranteed care to all." Paul Miller, past president of American League for Lobbyists, predicts some will take the offer. "I don't think you can take Michael Moore as the health care authority," Miller said. "Manufacturing Dissent" alleges he interviewed then-General Motors Chairman Roger Smith, the elusive subject of Moore's "Roger & Me," but left the footage on the cutting room floor. "Anybody who says that is a (expletive) liar," Moore told the AP. Moore, who said he hadn't seen "Manufacturing Dissent," acknowledged having had "a good 5 minutes of back-and forth" with Smith at a 1987 shareholders' meeting. But that was before he began working on "Roger & Me," Moore said. A clip of the meeting appears in "Manufacturing Dissent." Filmmakers Rick Caine and Debbie Melnyk interviewed an activist who said he saw Moore interview Smith. "If I'd gotten an interview with him, why wouldn't I put it in the film?" Moore said. "Any exchange with Roger Smith would have been valuable." http://www.dogeatdogfilms.com/rogerme.html ACADEMY ANNOUNCES 115 NEW MEMBERS Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carell and Jennifer Hudson have been asked to join Hollywood's most exclusive club. They were among 115 invited into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the group that hands out the Oscars. Others on the list include Daniel Craig, Aaron Eckhart, Christopher Plummer, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Danny Huston. Academy rules would have allowed nearly 150 new members, but the group endorsed fewer candidates than the maximum. The academy adopted policies 4 years ago to slow its growth, with the number of members eligible to vote on the Oscars holding steady at a bit below 6,000 since then. "The numbers are stabilizing nicely," said Bruce Davis, the academy's executive director. http://www.oscars.org MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS SCREENED 'SICKO' "Sicko" hita screens nationwide June 29, but Michael Moore gave Bellaire a sneak peek as a fundraiser for the Democratic Party in rural Antrim County, where he lives. His wife and the film's executive producer, Kathleen Glynn, is the local party's vice chairwoman. About 880 people paid $40 to watch the indictment of American health care. For an additional $60, they could attend a party with Moore, where he autographed film posters, surgical gloves and bandages. The film chronicles the struggles of Americans - some with insurance, others without - to navigate the health bureaucracy. Portraying insurance companies and supportive politicians in both parties as villains, Moore contrasts the U.S. system with those of Canada, France and Great Britain. The gloomy tone struck a chord with many who attended. "I feel like Michael Moore's a digger for truth," said Carole Chirgwin. http://www.antrimdems.org/ JULIA ROBERTS HAS NEW BABY BOY Julia Roberts has welcomed her third child, a boy named Henry Daniel Moder. Henry was born Monday in Los Angeles. He weighed 8 1/2 pounds, said Roberts' publicist, Marcy Engelman. "All of the Moders are doing great," Engelman said. Craven claimed a landslide occurred on his property after Shore added a pool, spa, and other landscaping. The director claimed the water destabilized the land and lowered the value of his property. The lawsuit said because Shore disputes Craven's allegations, the director seeks a judgment determining whether Shore should be held responsible. His lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. http://www.wescraven.com/ http://www.paulyshore.com/ +===================================+ <> <> <> DVD NEWS <> <> <> +===================================+ Enough talk. The move could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market. Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time. "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior VP of merchandising at Blockbuster, told The AP. Blockbuster will continue to rent HD DVD titles in the original 250 locations and online, the Dallas-based company said. The decision was helped in large part by the lopsided availability of titles in Blu-ray, Smith said. All major studios except one are releasing films in Blu-ray, with several, including Walt Disney, releasing exclusively in Blu-ray. Only Universal Studios, owned by General Electric, exclusively supports HD DVD. Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner, and Paramount Pictures, owned by Viacom, release films in both formats. "When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said. The rollout of Sony's PlayStation 3 game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray drive, also helped give the format momentum, Smith said. Blockbuster's decision, while significant on it's own, could boost Blu-ray even more if other retailers follow suit. "It will help shift the balance toward Blu-ray, clearly," said Richard Doherty, president of The Envisioneering Group, a research company. The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's decision was shortsighted and skewed by the success of films released by Blu-ray studios in the first 3 months of the year. The group said HD DVD has since gained momentum, selling more players and popular titles such as "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "The Matrix" trilogy. "I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group. The 2 formats have been battling it out since they both hit the market last year. Studios hope the high-definition discs, with their sharper picture and more room for interactive special features and games, will replace standard definition DVDs. The formats are incompatible and neither will play on standard DVD players, although standard DVDs can be viewed with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player. The Blu-ray camp has been helped by the release of such huge hits as "Casino Royale," "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" coming out exclusively in its format. As the battle has unfolded, the price of the high-definition players needed to show the movies has plummeted. Toshiba, the major supporter of HD DVD, is selling its player for $299 with a rebate, down from $499 when it first went on sale. Sony, which is pushing Blu-ray, recently slashed the price of its player by more than half to $499. The player retailed for $1,000 when it first was introduced. http://www.blockbuster.com http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com http://www.blu-raydisc.com +===================================+ <> <> TIME CAPSULE <> <> +===================================+ June 23, 2005 - Roger Ebert received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
