Howdy Adventureland Friends:

It has been a bad week here. We lost a dear family
friend to cancer. I would like to dedicate this issue
in the loving memory of Ronnie.

http://www.pal-item.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070725/NEWS04/707250320/1002/NEWS17

I also just learned of the death of another old
friend. An old cowboy by the Ralph that I had not seen
in many years. All the best to your pal Judy.

I hope you are enjoying the blog. There are some new
articles and old ones to for your pleasure.

http://advland.braveblog.com

My move has been delayed. Some more extensive work
will be needed before I can move in. The delay will
likely be a month or more. I will keep you posted.

Have you joined Blingo? One of you has joined so far.
Just think, when you win I will too. Thank you.

CHUCK, LARRY & HARRY BATTLE 4 TOP SPOT

Two guys named Chuck and Larry edged out a teenager
named Harry at the weekend box office. Adam Sandler
and Kevin James' "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry"
overcame bad reviews to debut ahead of "Harry Potter
and the Order of the Phoenix," according to studio
estimates. But they were close enough that rankings
could change when final figures come out Monday.

Universal reported that "Chuck & Larry" took in $34.8
million, while Warner Bros. reported "Order of the
Phoenix" at $32.2 million. Other studios tracked
"Chuck & Larry" in the $33 million range, which could
make No. 1 too close to call.

"I think it'll be decided Monday morning," said Dan
Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros.

Universal head of distribution Nikki Rocco said the
weekend was no contest.

"I'm not going to underestimate Adam Sandler and his
fan base in the middle of summer," Rocco said. "We're
by far the No. 1 film."

New Line's "Hairspray," featuring John Travolta,
Michelle Pfeiffer and Queen Latifah in an adaptation
of the Broadway smash, opened at No. 3 with $27.8
million.

Hollywood had a solid weekend no matter who ends up at
No. 1. The top 12 movies took in $147.6 million, up
3.5 percent from the same weekend last year, when
"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" was No. 1
with $35.2 million.

To report weekend numbers, studios use actual grosses
from Friday and Saturday and make an estimate for
Sunday based on past performance of similar movies.
Being the first report on weekend business, these
estimates draw more attention than Monday's final
figures, so No. 1 on Sunday is a coveted position.

"These estimates are in some ways more important than
the final Monday figures," said Paul Dergarabedian,
president of Media By Numbers. "They're often the
first impression and for some people maybe the only
impression they have of the box office for the
weekend."

"Chuck & Larry" stars Sandler as a firefighter who
poses as a gay partner for a widower colleague (James)
so his pal can maintain life insurance for his kids.

The movie followed the usual pattern for Sandler
comedies: Critics trashed it but loyal fans turned up.

"The beauty of Adam Sandler is his fan base adores
him, and he delivers on comedy," Universal's Rocco
said. "Adam is a star, and I can tell you we know
we're on the way with another $100 million movie for
Adam."

"Order of the Phoenix," which debuted at No. 1 the
previous weekend, raised its domestic total to $207.5
million.

Fellman said the movie lost some business this weekend
because of the mania over Saturday's publication of
J.K. Rowling's final book in the fantasy series,
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

"They wanted to get that book Saturday, lock
themselves in the house and read it, because they
didn't want their other friends by Monday telling them
who made it and who didn't," said Fellman of Warner
Bros.

"Hairspray" follows the musical adventures of a teen
(Nikki Blonsky) who sets out to racially integrate a
TV dance show in the 1960s. The stage musical which it
is based was adapted from John Waters' 1988 flick.

Women made up just over two-thirds of the "Hairspray"
audience, said David Tuckerman, head of distribution
for New Line. The studio hopes word of mouth will keep
the crowds coming and bring in more men in subsequent
weekends, Tuckerman said.

"We knew getting the guys on opening weekend was going
to be difficult. We knew 'Chuck & Larry' would get the
guys and we wouldn't," Tuckerman said.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight's "Sunshine"
opened to big numbers, pulling in $235,477 in 10
theaters. Directed by Danny Boyle, the film stars
Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh as members of a space
crew trying to re-ignite the sun in 50 years.

"Sunshine" expands to about 400 theaters Friday.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at
U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By
Numbers LLC:

1. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" @ $34.8M.

2. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" @
$32.2M.

3. "Hairspray" @ $27.8M.

4. "Transformers" @ $20.5M.

5. "Ratatouille" @ $11M.

6. "Live Free or Die Hard" @ $7.3M.

7. "License to Wed" @ $3.8M.

8. "1408" @ $2.6M.

9. "Evan Almighty" @ $2.5M.

10. "Knocked Up" @ $2.3M.

ROBIN MCLAURIN WILLIAMS

DOB: July 21, 1951, Chicago, Illinois, USA

This multifaceted actor not only possesses a gift for
making people laugh, but can move them to tears as
well. Williams studied acting at Julliard, and worked
as a mime and stand-up comic before landing the role
of the loveable alien, "Mork," on the 1970s sitcom
"Mork and Mindy." Although Williams’ first film,
Popeye, was a box office disappointment, he soon found
his niche when he was allowed to use his
improvisational talents in the 1987 film Good Morning,
Vietnam. Williams has since lit up the silver screen
in successful films including Dead Poets Society
(1989), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), The Birdcage (1996),
and received an Academy Award for Best Supporting
Actor for the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. Williams
recently spooked fans playing the creepy photo-lab
technician in One Hour Photo.

FACTOIDS:

Studied briefly at Julliard under John Houseman.
Houseman told him he was wasting his talent and he
should do stand-up comedy. He studied with actor
Christopher Reeve. They remained good friends until
Christopher Reeve's death in 2004.

Was to appear on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as
Prof. Berlinghoff Rasmussen, but a schedule conflict
forced him to drop out. He was inspired to seek a Trek
role by friend Whoopi Goldberg, who made several
appearances on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as the
bartender Guinan.

He enjoys cycling and occasionally trains with Lance
Armstrong.

After Christopher Reeve's tragic accident, Robin
visited him in the hospital. He dressed in scrubs and
a surgical mask, acting as if he was a real doctor
doing wacky tests. He even helped pay his medical
bills during his final years.

A supporter of the Democratic Party, Williams is
opposed to the war in Iraq. However, he is the most
consistent entertainer of troops since the war began.

Co-owns the Rubicon restaurant in San Francisco with
Robert De Niro and Francis Ford Coppola.

Considers Jonathan Winters and Richard Pryor as his
comedic idols.

QUOTABLES:

"...And now that you have a child you have to clean up
your act, 'cause you can't drink anymore. You can't
come home drunk and go, 'Hey, here's a little switch:
Daddy's gonna throw up on you!'"

"Ah, yes, divorce, from the Latin word meaning to rip
out a man's genitals through his wallet."

"See, the problem is that God gives men a brain and a
penis, and only enough blood to run one at a time."

AIR HEADS PERHAPS?

While on leave, my Marine buddy and I met two nursing
students from Southern California. After chatting them
up awhile, the conversation turned to what we did in
the service. When we told them we were in the
infantry, the girls seemed very impressed, giving us
big smiles as they told us how sweet that was.

Since infantry and sweet are seldom used in the same
sentence, I was a little confused. Until, that is, one
of the girls said, "We admire any man who works with
infants."

SPRINGFIELD WELCOMES 'SIMPSONS' DEBUT

The "hometown" of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie
played host to the premiere of "The Simpsons Movie."
Streets were closed, costumed Simpsons walked through
the crowds and blue-haired fans vied for tickets to
the 212-seat theater. "As Homer would say, 'Woo-hoo!'"
Matt Groening said before the first showing. Groening
and other VIPs walked the yellow carpet for a simple
ceremony and first of 4 screenings. About 2,000 people
turned out, far below the 10,000 some had forecast,
police said. A banner strung across Main Street read
"Welcome to Springfield, Vermont, home of the
Simpsons." Fans noshed on "Duff & D'oh-Nuts" ice
cream, custom-made by Ben & Jerry's, and sipped a
special "Duff" beer by Magic Hat Brewing. About 600
tickets were given away for 3 showings. The movie got
rave reviews. "It was fantastic. It's a big
culmination of all the years of the Simpsons," said
Mike Iglinski of Manchester. "I thought it was very
cute. Very clever, lots of little allusions," said
Mary Helen Hawthorne of Springfield.

GROENING DISHES ON 'SIMPSONS' MOVIE

Marge Simpson's blue beehive is a hybrid creation,
Matt Groening revealed. The "Simpsons" matriarch's
hair was inspired by "The Bride of Frankenstein" and
by his own mother's hairdo from the 1960s, the series'
creator told The New York Times Magazine. In the film,
the President is Arnold Schwarzenegger. "We needed a
president that would make people laugh," Groening told
the magazine. "And Schwarzenegger was the obvious
choice." In 18 years on Fox, "The Simpsons" has taken
several swipes at Rupert Murdoch, the network's owner.
Groening said Murdoch has been gracious everytime. "He
played himself on the show, and we wrote the line,
'I'm Rupert Murdoch, the billionaire tyrant, and this
is my skybox,' as his entrance line," Groening said.
"He performed it with great zeal."

HENSON COLLECTION MOVES 2 ATLANTA

Kermit the Frog & Miss Piggy are coming to Atlanta.

family announced. The 29-year-old center will house

The center also will display characters from the TV
show "Fraggle Rock" and movies "The Dark Crystal" and

ULTRA FLEXABLE FIBER OPTICS COMING

Corning Inc. is finding its way around very tight
corners to help high-speed Internet service reach
high-rise apartments and condominiums.

The world's largest maker of optical fiber said it
developed a new fiber that is 100 times more bendable
than standard fiber, clearing a hurdle for drawing
fiber technology into homes.

"This is a game-changing technology for
telecommunications applications," said president,
Peter Volanakis. "We have developed an optical fiber
cable that is as rugged as copper cable but with all
of the bandwidth benefits of fiber."

Corning scientists invented low-loss optical fiber in
the 1970s. The strands of ultra-pure glass delivering
voice, video and data at the speed of light replaced
copper as the backbone of America's phone and cable
television networks and enabled the phenomenal growth
of the Internet.

Current optical fiber doesn't carry light well when
bent around corners and routed through buildings,
making it difficult and expensive to run fiber all the
way to homes and businesses. The ultra-flexible
technology allows the fiber to be bent with virtually
no signal loss, Corning said.

Corning said the improvements will enable carriers to
economically offer high-speed Internet, voice and HD
TV service to virtually all high-rise buildings.

In standard fiber, "with two 90-degree turns, the
signal is lost," Corning spokesman Dan Collins said.
"This design relies on nanostructures that serve as a
mirror or a guardrail, and as the fiber is turned or
bent, the light doesn't leak out. We have wrapped the
fiber around a ball point pen and it retains its
effectiveness."

Michael Render, a market researcher in Tulsa, Okla.,
said the new product "would be an important
breakthrough" in fiber-to-the-home systems.

More than 1 percent of North American homes are now
directly connected to fiber, but many of them are
single-family dwellings, Render said.

"There obviously are a large number of people that
live in multi-tenant buildings, and improvements in
the way to get fiber to those individual living units
could be very significant," he said.

Render said the technology would make it easier to
bring fiber "all the way to each individual living
room, for example, or at least to each floor," instead
of taking it only to the basement and then using
existing wiring to reach the living unit.

There are 25 million high-rise apartment homes in the
United States and more than 680 million worldwide.
"The high cost of installation and difficulty in
delivering fiber to the home made this market
unappealing to most providers," Volanakis said.

Corning formed a team with Verizon Communications in
February to tackle the problems of installing fiber in
multiple-dwelling buildings. Verizon is the only major
U.S. phone or cable company to aggressively draw fiber
to existing homes.

"This fiber technology will enable us to bring faster
Internet speeds, higher-quality high-definition
content and more interactive capabilities than any
other platform which exists today," said Paul
Lacouture, a Verizon executive.
