Howdy Adventureland Friends: A funeral is no way to start the week. But it was a fitting tribute to great guy. The following reception closed with two fawns watching all of us. There is no doubt in my mind that Ronnie had sent them. http://www.pal-item.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070725/NEWS04/707250320/1002/NEWS17 I forgot a birthday last week. Happy Belated Birthday to my would be brother-in-law, Paul. He shared this special day with Norman Lear (1922) and Jerry Van Dyke (1931). I hope you enjoy the blog. http://advland.braveblog.com I talked to contractors myself. With any luck I can move later this month. The actual construction work should be done in about 2 weeks. "The Simpsons Movie" turned doughnuts into dollars over the weekend, raking in $71.9 million to debut as the top movie this week. The big screen tale of a lovable, but dysfunctional, family rolled over the competition, sending last week's top movie, Universal's "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," into second place with $19 million, a 44 percent drop. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," from Warner Bros., fell to third with $17.1 million, a 48 percent drop from last week. The film has grossed $242 million domestically after 3 weeks in theaters. "Homer's odyssey paid off," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. The film, which featured the antics of yellow-hued Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, grossed an average of $18,320 on 3,922 screens across the country and also opened in 70 foreign markets. "We are ecstatic," said Chris Aronson, senior VP for distribution at 20th Century Fox. "It far exceeded even the most optimistic of expectations." The hand-drawn movie had the fifth best opening weekend of the year, beating such notable contenders as "Transformers," from Paramount, "Ghost Rider," from Sony and computer-animated "Ratatouille," from Walt Disney and Pixar. "It's unprecedented to have the longest-running sitcom of all time still on the air and have it also be the number one movie in theaters," Dergarabedian said. Dergarabedian praised the film's marketing campaign, which included dressing 7-Eleven stores around the country as Kwik-E-Marts, the fictional convenience stores selling Simpsons' Buzz Cola and Squishees. The debut was good news for Fox, which also has done well this year with top-grossing films "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer." The long-awaited film version of the Fox TV show played well across the country with all age brackets, Fox said, giving the distributor hope that it will hold its own against next week's "The Bourne Ultimatum" from Universal. The stellar debut of "The Simpsons Movie" helped propel the summer box office. This week's top-12 films grossed $168.6 million, up 45 percent from the top 12 last year, which included "Miami Vice" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." The weekend's other debuts made the top 10, but lagged far behind "The Simpsons Movie." "No Reservations," the Warner Bros. romantic comedy starring Catherine Zeta-Jones as a gourmet chef, earned $11.8 million. "I Know Who Killed Me," a Sony Pictures/Tri-Star thriller starring Lindsay Lohan, debuted in 9th place with $3.4 million. "Who's Your Caddy," from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, grossed $2.9 million. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC: 01) "The Simpsons Movie" @ $71.9 million. 02) "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" @ $19.1 million. 03) "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" @ $17.1 million. 04) "Hairspray" @ $15.6 million. 05) "No Reservations" @ $11.8 million. 06) "Transformers" @ $11.5 million. 07) "Ratatouille" @ $7.2 million. 08) "Live Free or Die Hard" @ $5.4 million. 09) "I Know Who Killed Me" @ $3.4 million. 10) "Who's Your Caddy" @ $2.9 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK & LARRY (2007) Chuck & Larry are the pride of their fire station: always side-by-side and willing to do anything for each other. Open a newspaper and his reviews are there. He's published 3 books since last fall and has 2 more on the way. All the while, he's recuperating from cancer surgery and a subsequent operation that left him unable to speak. "I'm writing as much as ever," Ebert said in an AP interview, during which an electronic voice with a British accent spoke the words he typed onto a laptop computer. Now he's adding a page to the "Ebert & Roeper" Web site that is all thumbs: His, the late Gene Siskel's, Richard Roeper's and those who have filled in on the movie review show. The largest collection of video-based movie reviews online will include 5,000 movie reviews and span 20 years of the program that made the thumb the most prestigious of digits. The site will offer visitors a chance to watch spirited discussions about movies that always ended with a "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down" designation. "You can tell when we were mad at each other and when we were together against the world," Ebert (65) said of his longtime partner, Siskel. Ebert talked about his show that looks pretty much as it did when he and Siskel - competing film critics at rival Chicago newspapers - first sat down in the late '70s on PBS. He answered questions about his health, his work and his plans for the future. Ebert's neck is wrapped in gauze and his mouth hangs open, but he appears robust. As he fiddled with his computer before the interview, he even gave a sly smile and his trademarked thumbs-up when it started speaking his words. Ebert has been battling cancer. After a series of operations, he was operated on again in June of last year, with doctors removing a cancerous growth from his salivary gland and part of his right jaw. Two weeks later, a blood vessel burst near the site of the operation, forcing emergency surgery. He can't talk because doctors did a tracheostomy, opening an airway through an incision in his windpipe. The Sun-Times critic since 1967 said he isn't sure when he might return to the show. He needs surgery that he hopes will restore his voice, but he said he is cancer-free. Being hospitalized so long, he had to learn how to walk again. He and his wife, Chaz, take daily walks. "He's taking about 12,000 steps a day," his wife said. In the meantime, he screens as many as 3 films a day, with his nights spent watching DVDs to catch up on the films he's missed. He clearly wants to return to the balcony seat next to Roeper, who has been his co-host since 2000, the year after Siskel died. But even if he doesn't, he'd like to see the show "go on and on and on." Ebert is obviously proud of the program - as much for what it isn't as for what it is. "Too much entertainment TV is just hype and gossip," he said. "We have no interviews, no premieres, no arrests ... And (it is) a rare show that says when we think a movie is bad." All of that can be found on the Web site. Observers can see just how often Siskel, then the Chicago Tribune's film critic, and Ebert disagreed and how passionately they did so on "Siskel & Ebert at the Movies." They can see "Ebert & Roeper." And they can see more recent shows featuring Roeper and guest reviewers Jay Leno, The New York Times film critic A.O. Scott and Christy Lemire of The AP. They can see the time Ebert said he got "worked up" when Siskel didn't send his thumb north for "Apocalypse Now" - or the time the two heaped praise on "Hoop Dreams," smiling at the memory of how the "Oscar judges turned it off after 15 minutes." Then there is the memory of the enthusiastic thumbs-up both he and Roeper gave "Monster." If that doesn't sound like such a big deal, given that the movie earned Charlize Theron an Academy Award for best actress, Ebert said that at the time they gave their review "'Monster' wasn't going to theaters at all." http://www.AtTheMoviesTV.com +===================================+ <> <> <> DVD SHOWCASE <> <> <> +===================================+ Buy your favorite DVDs @ Adventureland http://psgoods.bravehost.com +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ FIREHOUSE DOG (2007) A famous Hollywood dog is sperated from his handlers. Especially when you're a 78-year-old man who happens to share the name of a certain fictional boy wizard who is famous the world over. Each time a new book or movie comes out, Bradenton resident Harry Potter starts getting phone calls from children, interview requests from the TV networks and autograph requests. "The kids want to know if I'm Harry Potter," he said with a chuckle. "I tell them I've been Harry Potter for darn near 80 years!" The real Harry Potter hasn't read any of the books or seen the hit movies. But crank calls aside, the retired Defense Department employee from Ohio, gets his mileage out of Pottermania. "When Harry talks to the kids, they'll ask about the owl and he'll say, 'Oh, he came by and brought the mail,'" said his wife, Jan. "Then, when they're done, the mothers come on and say thank you for talking to the kids. He gets a big kick out of it." But meeting a real Harry Potter can be a little puzzling for the kids. "They look at you, give you the once-over," he said, laughing. "They can't relate the one in the book to the one they see here. They come for video games, collectibles and to show off their "Star Wars" or "Lord of the Rings" costumes. They may even come to buy a winged helmet or a suit of armor. But many of the 120,000 fans who descend on Comic-Con, the nation's largest pop-culture convention, come for a glimpse of Hollywood's latest offerings and biggest stars. "This has really turned into an entertainment extravaganza," said Michael Triplett, attending his fifth Comic-Con. "It allows industry professionals to get a feel for what people are into as far as heroes and sci-fi, and it gives the fans a chance to be the first to see the new stuff." The 4-day festival, which began in 1970, fills the San Diego Convention Center. The floor buzzes with big screens flashing trailers for films and TV shows. Stations where players can try new video games. A life-size Lego Batman sits in one corner, a replica ship from "Pirates of the Caribbean" in another. Collectible figurines, arranged in museum-worthy displays, watch the action from behind glass. Fans snap up freebies, hauling huge tote bags through the convention floor. (Some waited in hour-long lines for the free totes.) And Hollywood is everywhere. Paramount showed footage from upcoming "Beowulf," as well as this summer's "Stardust." Fans of "Indiana Jones" learned that Karen Allen would reprise her role as Marion Ravenwood in the fourth installment. Warner Bros. planned to feature 5 upcoming films, including "Get Smart." Lionsgate had 4 films on the docket. Walt Disney was set to screen footage of its new "Narnia" film and the latest Pixar project. New Line and Universal were also on hand, as were a slew of TV networks touting new shows. Celebrities slated to appear included Jessica Alba, Nicolas Cage, Edward Norton, Clive Owen, Josh Hartnett, Robert Downey Jr., Dane Cook, cast members from "Lost" and "Heroes," and Matt Groening, creator of "The Simpsons." They make the 2-hour drive from Los Angeles for a chance to speak directly to viewers, said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "Comic-Con is like ground zero for the fanboys, and the box-office clout and influence that audience has is very significant," he said. "If you're a Hollywood studio and you're not down there, you're going to miss out on some important insights as to what properties and projects you should be pursuing." Jemuel Balangcod, a senior at San Diego High School, said he and his friends came to the convention to see "all the new stuff, but mostly movies and new trailers." The 17-year-old, who said he's most excited about the preview of "Indiana Jones 4," bristles at the event's nerdy reputation. "When people hear Comic-Con, they think it's kind of geeky, but it's really an entertainment expo of all mediums," he said. Wayne Sullivan (43) traveled from Albuquerque, N.M., to show off his beloved Batman suit, replete with a custom-made cowl made in Australia and a golden grappling gun and hand-cut pointy bats to throw at villains. He brought different costumes for each day of the event, including Mandalorian Warrior and Republic Commando outfits inspired by "Star Wars." Entertainment attorney Marc Greenberg (54) said he and his wife come every year for the movies, the artwork and the overall spectacle. "It's a massive display of pop culture in America," he said. "This is the home of all the geeks, nerds and aliens. This is the best you're going to get. We make it an annual pilgrimage." http://www.comic-con.org/ NIMOY'S SPOCK IN NEW 'STAR TREK' Leonard Nimoy (76) will don his famous pointy ears again in a "Star Trek" film due out Christmas 2008. "This is really going to be a great movie... ," Nimoy told fans at Comic-Con. He greeted the crowd with a Vulcan salute. Nimoy was joined by the newly named young Spock, "Heroes" Zachary Quinto. Both Spocks were introduced by the director and co-producer, J.J. Abrams. "This is a series I loved as a kid," Abrams said. While the character of Captain Kirk has yet to be cast, Abrams said that William Shatner, who played the role, would likely have a part in the film. "It has to be worthy, of him and of you," Abrams told fans. One fan asked Nimoy what he thought of his "replacement." "It was logical," the actor said. He then closed with "Live long and prosper." http://www.leonardnimoyphotography.com/ ZOMBIE TALKS 'HALLOWEEN' FRANCHISE Michael Myers is back to tell his side of the story. Rob Zombie is taking on "Halloween" and shines the spotlight on Myers. "We go on his journey of what his life is about," Zombie told fans at Comic-Con. "This really has no connection to those other movies." The film features Tyler Mane as Myers, Scout Taylor-Compton as Laurie Strode (Jaime Lee Curtis' original role), Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Loomis and Zombie's wife, Sheri Moon, as Myers' mom. The new movie will be in theaters Aug. 31. http://www.robzombie.com/ CARELL 'PSYCHED' ABOUT 'GET SMART' Steve Carell grew up watching "Get Smart" and played secret agent Maxwell Smart in the movie remake of the 1960s TV show. Carell told fans at Comic-Con, "It's probably the most fun I've ever had doing anything in my life," said the actor. "I have such respect for Don Adams and what he did... Frankly, I don't think I could ever be as good as he was. I'm just trying to do the best that I can..." The film, due next summer, retains the feel of the original, said director Peter Segal. "It's be both extremely funny but there will be action and jeopardy," Carell said. "I'm very psyched about it." The best thing about playing a secret agent? "I get to look like I am athletic, coordinated, intelligent and sexy," Carell said, "when in real life, I am none of the above." http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0136797/ +===================================+ <> <> STEALS & DEALS <> <> +===================================+ TAKE A BITE OUT OF STEEP DVD PRICES! Bergman gained international attention with 1955's "Smiles of a Summer Night." His last work was "Saraband," a made-for-television movie that aired on Swedish public television in 2003, the year he retired. Bergman never fully recovered after hip surgery last year. The son of Lutheran clergyman and a housewife, Ernst Ingmar Bergman was born on July 14, 1918, and grew up with a brother and sister in a household of severe discipline that he described in painful detail in "The Magic Lantern." He broke with his parents at 19, but later in life sought to understand them. The story of their lives was told in the television film "Sunday's Child," directed by his own son Daniel. The date of Bergman's funeral has not been set, but will be attended by friends and family. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=20693685 'BOURNE' PRODUCER SAYS 4TH. This style and a ruthless exploration of the malaise of modern man made the Italian director a darling Antonioni died at 94 in his home, after a career that spanned 6 decades. The death shortly after that of Swedish director Ingmar Bergman leaves European cinema without two of its most significant personalities. A stroke in the mid-1980s significantly slowed down Antonioni's activity, leaving him largely unable to speak. Condolences from across Europe poured in after news of Antonioni's death. Antonioni was born on Sept. 29, 1912, in Ferrara. Antonioni is survived by wife Enrica. "We think the market for the movie is relatively weak," Xiao Ping, a vice president at China Film Group said Tuesday. The Chinese government allows only about 20 foreign films a year to be shown. China has already imported "Transformers," "Spider-Man 3" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Variety reported that Chinese officials believe "Rush Hour 3" is "fundamentally anti-Chinese." Chan & Chris Tucker have co-starred in all 3 "Rush Hour" movies. The trilogy, directed by Brett Ratner, began in 1998. Piracy is widespread in China, so residents are unlikely to have any problem seeing "Rush Hour." Copyright statements that appear at the start of most DVDs and pro sports broadcasts and movies go too far and discourage legal use of the content, the Computer and Communications Industry Association said. The complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission protests statements used by Major League Baseball, the National Football League and NBC Universal and Dreamworks Animation, among others. The complaint asks the FTC to order the companies to stop using current copyright language and launch a marketing campaign to inform consumers of their rights under fair use laws. NBC Universal said there is nothing "unlawful, untruthful or inaccurate about the warning labels on our movies, which adhere to long accepted legal standards and are nearly identical to warnings used by some of CCIA's own members." A spokeswoman from Major League Baseball declined to comment on the complaint. Unresolved copyright issues are more important than ever to digital media companies because they could hinder the growth of video-sharing Web sites like YouTube.com, which Google purchased for $1.6 billion. Earlier this year, Viacom, which owns MTV, VH1, Comedy Central and other cable networks, filed a $1 billion copyright lawsuit against Google, aimed at reducing the posting of video clips by YouTube users. Google says it abides by copyright law and removes illegal clips as soon as it is notified of them. But Viacom and others allege the company's lax enforcement has helped spur traffic and revenue to the YouTube site. CCIA spokesman Will Rodger said that "the bottom line is that the copyright holder is not the final arbiter of how his work can be used. Copyrights are granted by the federal government and it's 'we the people' who decide where to draw that line between what's legal and what is not." The FTC though is unlikely to take action against companies named in CCIA's complaint, given the lack of clarity on copyright law on the Internet, law professor Roger Schechter said. "We're getting into these fights because the law is lagging behind technology," said Schechter at George Washington University Law School. "At the end of the day people are going to use the Internet to clip and quote copyrighted material. And it may be that we need to start looking at very different legal solutions to the ones that are currently in use." http://www.ccianet.org/ +===================================+ <> <> TIME CAPSULE <> <> +===================================+ July 30, 2000 - Jennifer Aniston & Brad Pitt were married. 'Chuck & Larry' and 'Knocked Up' were both very good. But crabby and lazy staff needs replaced. The first is not a gay movie but story of friendship and family that really goes the distance. Just how far would you go for your family and friends? The second starts as a comical look at casual sex and responsability. What follows is a slow building love story between a celebrity and a slacker turned dad. With the move delayed, we will meet here next week.
