"The Bourne Ultimatum" took in $70.2 million this weekend, far surpassing the openings of both earlier Bourne films based on novels by Robert Ludlum. The opening pushed last week's top film, "The Simpsons Movie," to second, with $25.6 million. The big-screen version of the animated TV show has topped $315 million worldwide for Twentieth Century Fox. "We're really riding high today," said Nikki Rocco, distribution head for Universal Pictures, which put out "Bourne Ultimatum." "The reviews and audiences rated this one the best one yet." The second in the series, "The Bourne Supremacy," earned $52.5 million in its opening weekend in 2004, while the first film, "The Bourne Identity," had an opening weekend of $27.1 million in 2002. Universal's research showed that more than 90 percent of the opening weekend audience had seen the previous two Bourne films. "People just love Matt Damon and (director) Paul Greengrass is a superstar," Rocco said. "Matt Damon is the new James Bond." The film's opening bodes well for a robust August, which is typical when the sweltering summer movie season begins to cool off. "The summer movie season is alive and well even as we are moving into the home stretch," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "The Bourne franchise just keeps getting better with age. The consistency of quality has always been there with the Bourne movies. That builds loyalty among viewers." This weekend's top 12 films earned 36 percent more than the top 12 did in the same weekend last year. So far this year, the box office is up 6 percent with revenues of $6.073 billion, while attendance is up 1.42 percent. "Underdog," Disney's live-action version of the animated crimefighter, debuted in third place with $12 million. The weekend's other openers didn't bark as loud. "Hot Rod," a comedy from Paramount, earned $5 million. "Bratz," a live-action comedy from Lionsgate based on the dolls, took in $4.3 million. While it finished out of the top 12, "Becoming Jane," from Miramax, the story of Jane Austen starring Anne Hathaway, took in $1 million on 100 screens for an average of $10,100 per screen in its opening weekend. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday. 01) "The Bourne Ultimatum" @ $70.2 million. 02) "The Simpsons Movie" @ $25.6 million. 03) "Underdog" @ $12 million. 04) "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry" @ $10.5 million. 05) "Hairspray" @ $9.3 million. 06) "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" @ $9.3 million. 07) "No Reservations" @ $6.6 million. 08) "Transformers" @ $6 million. 09) "Hot Rod" @ $5 million. 10) "Bratz" @ $4.3 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (2007) Jason Bourne will hunt down his past in order to find a future. Ball knew she wanted to be an actress from the time she was a small child, and enrolled in the John Murray Anderson dramatic school in 1926. Ball secured her first role on the silver screen in 1933’s Roman Scandals, and continued to be featured on RKO radio. Throughout the 1930s and ‘40s, Ball was never at a loss for work, and she earned the nickname "Technicolor Tessie" at MGM due to her red hair and sparkling smile. At the height of her sitcom success, the public loved Lucy so much that the birth of her baby had more news coverage than President Eisenhower’s inauguration. After the show ended, Ball had a successful stint on "Here’s Lucy" (1968-74), and starred in and produced the film adaptation of the musical "Mame." FACTOIDS: Was of Irish, Scottish, French, and English descent. Originally interred at Forest Lawn (Hollywood Hills), Los Angeles, California. In 2003, she was re-interred in the Ball family plot in Lake View Cemetery, Jamestown, New York. Was the first woman to own her own film studio. Once fired from an ice cream store because she kept forgetting to put bananas in banana splits. Pictured on a 34? commemorative postage stamp in the Legends of Hollywood series, issued August 6, 2001. Lucy and Desi Arnaz married at Byram River Beagle Club in Connecticut in 1940. She had 3 miscarriages (1942/1949/1950). They later married a second time in a church because his mother believed that the reason for having not had children yet was because they were never married in the Catholic Church. QUOTABLES: "Desi (Desi Arnaz) was the great love of my life. I will miss him until the day I die. But I don't regret divorcing him. I just couldn't take it anymore." "One of the things I learned the hard way was that it doesn't pay to get discouraged. Keeping busy and making optimism a way of life can restore faith in yourself." "I don't know anything about luck. RELEASES 'BATMAN' TEASER Warner Bros. pushed out a new photo for next year's The Dark Knight Batman film. The studio published the teaser trailer for the film online. It features no footage from the movie. It has a Batman logo with dialogue from Christian Bale and Michael Caine. That segues into a Joker playing card and Ledger dialogue and the Joker's trademark maniacal laugh. The trailer premiered in theaters before The Simpsons Movie.
