Howdy Adventureland Friends: Reel 2 Reel is back as promised. Our Blog readers know I was thinking about putting this off again. But, knowing you were waiting, I changed my mind. They also know of some changes @ Adventureland Video. First, is our http://adventurelandvideo.com domain. I am slowly working on our web sites too. Have you joined Blingo? http://www.blingo.com/friends?ref=LJt9EIXsXBaBuP-fW5DaMrkkYSk +===================================+ Find your showtimes @ Adventureland http://advland.bravehost.com +===================================+ <> <> <> BOX OFFICE <> <> <> +===================================+ ROCK CRUSHES 'KINGDOM' @ BOX OFFICE Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had the winning game plan. Disney's "The Game Plan," starring Johnson as a quarterback whose bachelor lifestyle is disrupted by the arrival of a daughter he never knew he had, opened as the top weekend flick with $22.7 million. The weekend looked like it would be a showdown between "The Game Plan" & Universal's "The Kingdom," starring Jamie Foxx and Jennifer Garner as a U.S. team investigating a terrorist attack in Saudi Arabia. But "The Kingdom" fell short, debuting at No. 2 with $17.7 million. The previous weekend's top movie, Sony's "Resident Evil: Extinction," fell 66% from its opening-weekend gross, finishing in third place with $8 million and raising its total to $36.8 million. Johnson was the latest action hero to broaden his audience with a family film. PG rated "The Game Plan" took advantage of a dry spell for kid-friendly movies, as parents with children made up 2/3 of the audience. "There was definitely pent-up demand for people who don't necessarily want to go to the heavy R-rated films," said Chuck Viane @ Disney. "The entire general audience has been underserved lately." "The Kingdom" faced heavy competition from other R-rated films, among them "3:10 to Yuma,""The Brave One" and "Eastern Promises." Though not an overtly political film, "The Kingdom" also had to test audience interest for action tales set against the war on terrorism. "If you're going to tell stories like this, you're going to tell stories of what's actually going on in our world. It's very difficult, challenging subject matter," said Nikki Rocco @ Universal. "Either you're going to like this kind of movie or you're not." In limited release, Fox Searchlight's "The Darjeeling Limited" opened strong, taking in $140,000 at 2 New York City theaters on Saturday and Sunday, following its premiere Friday at New York Film Festival. Directed by Wes Anderson, the film stars Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody and Jason Schwartzman as brothers on an odyssey across India. Focus Features' "Lust, Caution" also did well in its debut at a New York City theater, taking in $61,688. From director Ang Lee, NC-17-rated "Lust, Caution" features scenes of explicit sex as a Chinese woman goes undercover in a plot to kill a man collaborating with invading Japanese forces. Both films expand to more theaters Friday. It was the second straight weekend that Hollywood business was down after a summer of record revenue. The top 12 movies took in $76.7 million, down 11% from the same weekend last year, when "Open Season" was the No. 1 movie with $23.6 million. "What goes up must come down," said Paul Dergarabedian @ Media By Numbers. "It would be really difficult to maintain 3, 4 months of up box office, so this was kind of inevitable. It was quite a strong fall last year, so we're having a little trouble competing." Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. 01) "The Game Plan" @ $22.7 million. 02) "The Kingdom" @ $17.7 million. 03) "Resident Evil: Extinction" @ $8 million. 04) "Good Luck Chuck" @ $6.3 million. 05) "3:10 to Yuma" @ $4.2 million. 06) "The Brave One" @ $3.8 million. 07) "Mr. Woodcock" @ $3 million. 08) "Eastern Promises" @ $2.9 million. 09) "Sydney White" @ $2.7 million. 10) "Across the Universe" @ $2.05 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ THE GAME PLAN Quarterback Joe Kingman is known as one of the toughest players to ever take the field. Blessed with amazing strength and agility, he's famed for being able to handle any hit. Kingman's team, The Rebels, is chasing their long-awaited championship and Joe has been living the ultimate bachelor fantasy: he's cool, rich, famous and the life of the party. But his dream is suddenly sacked when he discovers Peyton, the 8-year-old daughter he never knew existed. Now, just as his career is soaring, Joe must learn to juggle his old life of parties, practices and dates while tackling ballet, bedtime stories and dolls. Equally perplexed is his hard-edged mega-agent, Stella Peck, herself without a parental bone in her body. As the championship grows nearer, Joe realizes that the game that truly matters has nothing to do with money, endorsements or touchdowns -- it's all about patience, teamwork, selflessness and winning the heart of the one little fan who counts the most. "The lesson seems to be, 'Think you can't have it all? You can!' Which, as we know, is what parenting is all about." -- Entertainment Weekly, Scott Brown "This innocuous family fare will probably appeal to wee ones who haven't been fed enough of this formula. But I wanted to spit up a little." -- E! Did its environmental message make you want to buy ecologically sound toilet paper? Well, now you can get instant gratification - if you watched the movie on an HD DVD player and are willing to give the remote a workout. The HD DVD of "Evan Almighty" will be the first disc to include an online shopping feature, Universal Studios announced Wednesday. It's a new front in the struggle between HD DVD and Blu-ray to become the high-definition successor to the DVD. The disc formats offer nearly indistinguishable image quality, so the two camps are battling for holiday shoppers by other means, like cutting prices and piling on features. The HD DVD camp, which apart from General Electric's Universal includes Viacom's Paramount Pictures, Toshiba Corp. and Microsoft Corp., has been touting the online capabilities of Toshiba's players, which all have jacks for broadband Internet connections. By contrast, not all Blu-ray players have Internet connections. But the HD DVD camp has been slow to take advantage of the Internet. Discs with Internet features, like downloadable trailers and subtitles, only started appearing this summer. "Evan Almighty," to be released Oct. 9, will contain a simple Web browser that connects to Universal's online store, which will be offering products vaguely related to the movie. Previews of the site featured toilet paper made of recycled materials - 12 rolls for $14 - and a rain barrel for $135 (the movie is a retelling of the story of Noah's Ark). The products offered may change by the time the disc goes on sale. It's uncertain whether consumers will appreciate the shopping opportunity, especially since the transaction has to be completed using the remote. Judging by a demonstration of the technology, entering credit-card information and a home address using the remote and an onscreen keyboard is a slow process. It can be shortened by creating an account in advance on a home computer, then logging into it through the player. The online shopping feature may not be immediately appealing to consumers, but they are not the only battleground in the HD DVD versus Blu-ray fight. It's also important for each format to woo the studios. The HD DVD camp scored a major victory in August, when it lured Paramount into its fold. The studio had previously issued movies in both formats. With a few exceptions, HD DVD is now its only high-definition format. Time Warner's Warner Bros. is now the only major studio to release discs in both formats. The Walt Disney Co., News Corp's 20th Century Fox and Sony Pictures release only Blu-ray discs. Sony Corp. is the main maker of Blu-ray players. Its PlayStation 3 game console plays Blu-ray discs, providing a large base of players. The shopping feature on "Evan Almighty" is not quite what was originally envisioned for HD DVD discs. The original plan was to have little tags pop up while the movie was playing, offering the opportunity to, for instance, add to the shopping cart the sunglasses that an actor was wearing, said Kevin Collins, Microsoft's "director of HD DVD evangelism." But that looked too much like an endorsement by the actor, something that wasn't included in their contracts, Collins said. "Our next challenge is to take this to the creative people," said Ken Graffeo, executive vice president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. "If they get agreements from the actors at the planning stage, it could be a different thing." "Evan Almighty" will be a combination disc, with the HD DVD on one side and a DVD on the other. It will list for $40. Robert Dennis Furo (45) pleaded not guilty. Furo, who remained jailed on $50,000 bail, faces six years if convicted. Cage called a security guard after he saw a man in his home, police Lt. Craig Fox said. "He was standing there naked," Fox said. When the officers had arrived Cage had escorted the man outside. Furo returns to court Oct. 10 for a preliminary hearing. 'INDIANA JONES' LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT SANTA MONICA, Calif. - The producers of "Indiana Jones 4" have settled a lawsuit against an actor accused of breaching a confidentiality agreement. The agreement barred everyone involved from publicly discussing it. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Tyler revealed plot details during an interview with his hometown newspaper, Oklahoma's Edmond Sun. A spokesman said he didn't know whether Nelson's scenes would be cut from the movie. The new Indy adventure will be in theaters next May. SCHRADER 2 GET FILM FESTIVAL AWARD STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Paul Schrader will receive a lifetime achievement award at this year's Stockholm International Film Festival. The writer-director is being recognized for his "unique voice, which gives life to sharp, relentless characters in a modern city," festival organizers said. Schrader (61) will receive the Bronze Horse award Nov. 18. Last year's winner was Swedish director Lasse Hallstrom. Previous winners include Oliver Stone, Roman Polanski, David Lynch, Lauren Bacall and Gena Rowlands. The 10-day film festival starts Nov. 15. DATE ANNOUNCED 4 'TRANSFORMERS 2' E! Online is reporting that Dreamworks confirmed a June 26, 2009 theatrical release for Transformers 2. The big Summer blockbuster hit sequel is getting a fast-track green light before potential strikes next June by the Writers and Actors guilds. Earlier this Summer, director Michael Bay criticized Paramount for their decision to only support HD DVD. Those comments put a potential sequel in jeopardy, but today's news seems to give hope that things are smoothed over. STOLEN 'INDIANA JONES 4' GOODS LOS ANGELES - Authorities arrested a man in the theft of computers and photographs used for "Indiana Jones" movie. LA County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said the man was taken into custody. His identity has not been released. Items were said to be confidential. Whitmore said detectives posed as buyers. GEORGE GRIZZARD DEAD @ AGE 79 NEW YORK - Actor George Grizzard died Tuesday of complications from lung cancer. Grizzard's films included "Advise and Consent" in 1962 and "Comes a Horseman" in 1978. He is survived by his partner, William Tynan. SNIPES MOTION 2 POSTPONE DENIED OCALA, Fla. - A judge refused to postpone Wesley Snipes' tax evasion trial after his newly appointed attorneys asked for extra time to prepare. Snipes' new attorney, Robert G. Bernhoft, wrote in a motion that the actor was concerned about whether his former attorney Daniel Meachum would be well enough to take an active role in his Oct. 22 trial. "This series of events would lead any reasonable person to suspect that the defendant's dismissal of able counsel is nothing more than a ploy designed to force a continuance of the trial," Judge Terrell Hodges said. "In any event, it will not have that effect." OWEN WILSON OUT & ABOUT AGAIN BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Owen Wilson returned to the public eye Thursday night, making an appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of "The Darjeeling Limited." Sporting a shaggy blond beard and dark jacket, it was among Wilson's first public appearances since a suicide attempt in late August. Wilson was joined by fellow cast mates Adrien Brody, Anjelica Huston, Jason Schwartzman and filmmaker Wes Anderson. Before the movie, Anderson introduced Wilson, his longtime friend, saying, "I've never made a movie without him and I hope I never have to." The two have worked together on several films. The premiere was held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. +===================================+ <> <> <> JUST 4 FUN <> <> <> +===================================+ "According to a new medical study, barbecuing is bad for your prostate. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the institute announced Thursday that the Academy Award-winning filmmaker and actor would be honored as the 36th recipient of its life-achievement award. Beatty, 70, said he was told about the honor while heading with wife Annette Bening to an AFI anniversary lunch. "It's a very good feeling. It's always nice to be accepted," Beatty told The Associated Press before the lunch. "I'm very happy to be part of and am actually quite proud to be a member of the film community." The AFI award will be presented next June 12. Beatty won the best-director Oscar for 1981's "Reds," which also earned him a best-actor nomination. He had three other nominations as best actor for "Bonnie and Clyde,""Heaven Can Wait" and "Bugsy." Never a prolific filmmaker or actor, Beatty has not starred in a movie since 2001's flop "Town & Country" and has not directed since 1998's "Bulworth." Beatty said he does have a new film that he is writing and directing nearly ready to go, but would not discuss details. "I'm on the verge right now. I approach it always from somewhat a combination of excitement and dread," said Beatty. "I find if I yak too much about it, it gives me a good excuse to put it off. For me, 'right on the verge' can mean decades." http://www.afi.com +===================================+ <> <> TIME CAPSULE <> <> +===================================+ September 1, 1998 - The movie "Titanic" went on sale across North America.
