"The Heartbreak Kid" opened at #2 with $14 million. "The Game Plan" remained on top flick for the second-straight week with $16.3 million. Paramount and DreamWorks had expected more from "The Heartbreak Kid," which reteamed Stiller with Peter and Bobby. They had previously collaborated on 1998's "There's Something About Mary." The studios had gotten positive reaction from audiences at advance screenings, but reviews came in much harsher than expected, said DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan. "We were surprised," Sullivan said. "The reviews hurt us. We love the movie. We've seen it play great. But I think reviews do matter on an R-rated movie." An update of the 1972 comedy written by Neil Simon and directed by Elaine May, "Heartbreak Kid" stars Stiller as a man who marries an incompatible bride, then meets the perfect woman on his honeymoon. "Heartbreak Kid" did come in slightly ahead of the $13.7 million first weekend of "There's Something About Mary," which lingered in theaters for months and became one of 1998's top hits at $176.5 million. Movies hung around longer then, today's films tend to live or die based on their opening weekends. That bodes ill for "Heartbreak Kid," which would need to hold strong in coming weeks to make good on its $60-million-plus production budget. "The shelf life of films is so much shorter today than it was 10 years ago," said Paul Dergarabedian @ Media By Numbers. "You have to make your mark early to sustain yourself in today's marketplace." "Heartbreak Kid" played much wider - 3,229 theaters, about 1,000 more than "Something About Mary," which packed in more viewers. Based on today's ticket prices, "Something About Mary" pulled in 3 million people, compared to 2 million for "Heartbreak Kid." In limited release, George Clooney's legal drama "Michael Clayton" opened with $704,000 in 11 theaters, a promising lead-in for the film's nationwide rollout Friday. Released by Warner Bros., "Michael Clayton" stars Clooney as an attorney at a huge Manhattan law firm dealing with personal financial ruin while trying to salvage a case for a corporate client. Disney's "Game Plan," a football family tale starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, held strong in its second weekend, raising its total to $42.8 million. Overall revenues were down for the third-straight weekend, with the top-12 movies taking in $65.7 million, off 35% from the same weekend last year. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. 01) "The Game Plan" @ $16.3M. 02) "The Heartbreak Kid" @ $14M. 03) "The Kingdom" @ $9.3M. 04) "Resident Evil: Extinction" @ $4.3M. 05) "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising" @ $3.7M. 06) "Good Luck Chuck" @ $3.5M. 07) "Feel the Noise" @ $3.4M. 08) "3:10 to Yuma" @ $3M. 09) "The Brave One" @ $2.3M. 10) "Mr. Woodcock" @ $2M. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ THE HEARTBREAK KID The story centers on a man who is convinced that he has finally met the right girl and marries too quickly. The software maker will maintain close ties with privately held Bungie LLC and own a minority stake in it, the companies said. Bungie will develop games exclusively for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Windows platforms "for the foreseeable future," said Harold Ryan, Bungie's president. The companies will continue to work together to support the "Halo" franchise and will expand their partnership to include new games. Executives declined to comment on the size of Microsoft's stake or other terms of the deal. Microsoft acquired Chicago-based Bungie and "Halo" in 2000, ensuring Xbox would be the only game console to run the game. Bungie moved from Chicago to Kirkland, Wash., and the first installment of the trilogy went on sale with the first Xbox console in November 2001. "Working with Microsoft was great for us, it allowed us to grow as a team and make the ambitious, blockbuster games we all wanted to work on," said Jason Jones, Bungie founder and partner. "But Bungie is like a shark. We have to keep moving to survive. We have to continually test ourselves, or we might as well be dolphins. Or manatees." Matt Rosoff, analyst for Directions on Microsoft, said, "This is probably about Bungie wanting to have a little more control over kinds of games they're making, and not wanting to answer to Microsoft for everything." Bungie's Ryan said they had plenty of creative freedom to build new game concepts and prototypes. David Riley, director at NPD Group, was skeptical, "Even though they say they had plenty of creative juices flowing, (they) still can't act on them, not all of them anyway. There are limitations, and rules you need to abide by." Gamers have plunked down $300 million for "Halo 3" since its release two weeks ago, and Microsoft said the game's launch goosed sales of Xbox 360. About 4.5 million copies of the first "Halo" were sold in the U.S., and more than 6.2 million of "Halo 2," according to NPD Group. "While we are supporting Bungie's desire to return to its independent roots, we will continue to invest in our 'Halo' entertainment property with Bungie and other partners," said Shane Kim, vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. In an interview Friday, Kim added that Microsoft had no plans to spin off other game studios owned by the software maker. Rumors swirled that a contract between Microsoft and Bungie had expired during development of "Halo 3." Ryan said no such contract existed. "For the last several years, everyone at Bungie has been an at-will employee," he said. For the fiscal year that ended in June, Microsoft wrote down $1 billion to cover Xbox 360 defects, and reported an operating loss of $1.89 billion for the game division. The company told Wall Street it expects the division to be profitable in the current fiscal year, and Kim said of the "Halo 3" launch, "We're well on our way to achieving that objective." 'MANHUNT 2' STILL BANNED IN U.K. British regulators banned a toned-down version of "Manhunt 2," saying the changes didn't go far enough to alter the "bleakness and callousness of tone." The game's maker called the decision "a setback for video games." In June, Take-Two Interactive suspended plans to distribute the game - because it was rejected by the Entertainment Software Rating Board in the U.S. and by regulators in Europe - but finally agreed, two months later, to release the revised version. The game, made by Take-Two's Rockstar Games, allows players to assume the role of an escapee from a mental institution who can go on a killing rampage. In the U.S., the less-violent version was accepted by ESRB and received a Mature rating. It will ship on Halloween for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Wii systems. But British Board of Film Classification said it was unsatisfied with the changes, which included blurring some of the game's execution-style kills. "The impact of the revisions on the bleakness and callousness of tone, or the essential nature of the game play, is clearly insufficient," BBFC director David Cooke said. Cooke said it was up to Take-Two and Rockstar Games to resubmit a further edited version. Rockstar Games said it would appeal. "The changes necessary in order to publish the game in Britain are unacceptable to us and represent a setback for video games," Rockstar Games said. "The BBFC allows adults the freedom to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in movies and we think adults should be similarly allowed to decide for themselves when it comes to horror in video games, such as Manhunt 2." Rockstar Games did not explain what it was about the BBFC's demands that were unacceptable compared to the earlier alterations made for the U.S. market. +===================================+ <> <> <> INTERMISSION <> <> <> +===================================+ DIESEL & WALKER GET 'FAST & FURIOUS' Rumors are circulating that Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are in negotiations to return to the franchise that they launched with 2001's Fast and the Furious.
