Howdy Adventureland Friends:

It has been a downer week. Actually, it has been a
downer 6-weeks. We have lost out 3 houses that we had
our eye on. Oh well, better luck next time.

Christmas will be a downer too. The entire family is
strapped. In fact, if not for various point programs,
I would not be Christmas shopping at all.

I urge you to check them out. My choices are E-poll,
My Coke Rewards, Memolink and My points. All allow you
to earn points redeemable for gift cards.

Blingo is another great program. The Blingo Search
is powered by Google. Users are picked at random
to win great prizes. This is a PCH web site.

3 BIG STARS LIFT BOX OFFICE

Denzel Washington & Russell Crowe's "American
Gangster" took in $46.3 million to lead the box
office, with Jerry Seinfeld's "Bee Movie" following
with $39.1 million. Together, they revitalized
Hollywood's autumn.

"It took 3 of the biggest stars in the world to get
the box office back on track, and they did it in high
style with 2 totally different kinds of movies," said
Paul Dergarabedian of Media By Numbers. "You had an
R-rated movie and a PG-rated movie bringing in a
really diverse audience."

After 6-straight weekends of declining revenues,
overall business rose, with the top-12 movies taking
in $127.2 million, up 12% from the same weekend last
year, when "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for
Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" was No. 1
with $26.5 million.

Universal's "American Gangster," directed by Ridley
Scott and starring Washington as Harlem drug lord
Frank Lucas and Crowe as a Jersey cop on his trail,
rode a wave of acclaim and Academy Awards buzz to
debut at the top of the box office.

Audiences had been relatively disinterested this fall
in serious R-rated films. Many of the earlier movies
were box-office underachievers despite critical
praise, but "American Gangster" landed good reviews
and packed theaters.

"American Gangster" was the biggest opening ever for
the film's 2 stars. Crowe's previous best was $34.8
million for "Gladiator," also directed by Scott, while
Washington's was $29 million for "Inside Man."

"These are 2 great actors telling this true story of
Frank Lucas," said Nikki Rocco, head of distribution
at Universal. "You couldn't have picked a better
cast."

DreamWorks and Paramount's "Bee Movie" features
Seinfeld in his first big project since his sit-com
went off the air 9 years ago. Co-written by Seinfeld,
the movie has him providing the voice of a bee who
sues humanity for stealing his species' honey.

"Bee Movie" owned the family crowd, and studio
executives said they expect the movie to hold up well
through the holidays. It does face direct competition
this weekend with Warner Bros. "Fred Claus," starring
Vince Vaughn as Santa's brother and Paul Giamatti as
St. Nick.

"We look forward to seeing how it plays out, but it
really looks like there's some strong playing time
ahead for both movies," said Anne Globe, head of
marketing for DreamWorks.

The weekend's other new wide release - New Line's
"Martian Child," starring John Cusack as a widower
adopting a troubled boy - opened with $3.65 million,
finishing at No. 7.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at
U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By
Numbers:

01) "American Gangster" @ $46.3 million.
02) "Bee Movie" @ $39.1 million.
03) "Saw IV" @ $11 million.
04) "Dan in Real Life" @ $8.1 million.
05) "30 Days of Night" @ $4 million.
06) "The Game Plan" @ $3.85 million.
07) "Martian Child" @ $3.65 million.
08) "Michael Clayton" @ $2.9 million.
09) "Why Did I Get Married?" @ $2.7 million.
10) "Gone Baby Gone" @ $2.4 million.

+===================================+
VIVIEN LEIGH

Birth:   Nov. 5, 1913
Darjeeling, India
Death:   Jul. 7, 1967
London, England
(chronic tuberculosis)
Name:  Mary Hartley Vivian

If a film were made of the life of Vivien Leigh, it
would open in India just before World War I, where a
successful British businessman could live like a
prince. In the mountains above Calcutta, a little
princess is born. Because of the outbreak of World War
I, she is six years old the first time her parents
take her to England. Her mother thinks she should have
a proper English upbringing and insists on leaving her
in a convent school - even though Vivien is two years
younger than any of the other girls at the school. The
only comfort for the lonely child is a cat that was in
the courtyard of the school that the nuns let her take
up to her dormitory. Her first and best friend at the
school is an eight-year-old girl, Maureen O'Sullivan
who has been transplanted from Ireland. In the
bleakness of a convent school, the two girls can
recreate in their imaginations the places they have
left and places where they would some day like to
travel. After Vivien has been at the school for 18
months, her mother comes again from India and takes
her to a play in London. In the next six months Vivien
will insist on seeing the same play 16 times. In India
the British community entertained themselves at
amateur theatricals and Vivien's father was a leading
man. Pupils at the English convent school are eager to
perform in school plays. It's an all-girls school, so
some of the girls have to play the male roles. The
male roles are so much more adventurous. Vivien's
favorite actor is Leslie Howard, and at 19 she marries
an English barrister who looks very much like him. The
year is 1932. Vivien's best friend from that convent
school has gone to California, where she's making
movies. Vivien has an opportunity to play a small role
in an English film, Things Are Looking Up (1935). She
has only one line but the camera keeps returning to
her face. The London stage is more exciting than the
movies being filmed in England, and the most thrilling
actor on that stage is Laurence Olivier. At a party
Vivien finds out about a stage role, "The Green Sash",
where the only requirement is that the leading lady be
beautiful. The play has a very brief run, but now she
is a real actress. An English film is going to be made
about Elizabeth I. Laurence gets the role of a young
favorite of the queen who is sent to Spain. Vivien
gets a much smaller role as a lady-in-waiting of the
queen who is in love with Laurence's character. In
real life, both fall in love while making this film,
Fire Over England (1937). In 1938, Hollywood wants
Laurence to play Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights
(1939). Vivien, who has just recently read Gone with
the Wind (1939), thinks that the role of Scarlett
O'Hara is the first role for an actress that would be
really exciting to bring to the screen. She sails to
America for a brief vacation. In New York she gets on
a plane for the first time to rush to California to
see Laurence. They have dinner with Myron Selznick the
night that his brother, David O. Selznick, is burning
Atlanta on a backlot of MGM (actually they are burning
old sets that go back to the early days of silent
films to make room to recreate an Atlanta of the
1860s). Vivien is 26 when Gone with the Wind (1939)
makes a sweep of the Oscars in 1939. So let's show
26-year-old Vivien walking up to the stage to accept
her Oscar and then as the Oscar is presented the
camera focuses on Vivien's face and through the magic
of digitally altering images, the 26-year-old face
merges into the face of Vivien at age 38 getting her
second Best Actress Oscar for portraying Blanche
DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). She
wouldn't have returned to America to make that film
had not Laurence been going over there to do a film,
Carrie (1952) based on Theodore Dreiser's novel
"Sister Carrie". Laurence tells their friends that his
motive for going to Hollywood to make films is to get
enough money to produce his own plays for the London
stage. He even has his own theater there, the St.
James. Now Sir Laurence, with a seat in the British
House of Lords, is accompanied by Vivien the day the
Lords are debating about whether the St James should
be torn down. Breaking protocol, Vivien speaks up and
is escorted from the House of Lords. The publicity
helps raise the funds to save the St. James.
Throughout their two-decade marriage Laurence and
Vivien were acting together on the stage in London and
New York. Vivien was no longer Lady Olivier when she
performed her last major film role, The Roman Spring
of Mrs. Stone (1961).

ruling marks the second defeat for local opponents who
say the film director's fence is unsightly, blocks

PANETTIERE PROTESTS DOLPHIN HUNTS

Hayden Panettiere and fellow activists drew angry
shouts and shoving from fishermen in Japan. The Sea
Shepherd group paddled out to a cove in Taiji to
interfere with the hunt. "This baby stuck its head out
and kind of looked as us, and the thought that
the baby is no longer with us is very difficult,"
Panettiere said. About 14,000 dolphins are killed for
food in Japan every year. The hunts involve herding
them into coves. They are then trapped and killed.

WRITERS SET STRIKE DATE

Writers prepared to go on strike Monday for the first
time in 2 decades. Writers Guild of America voted to
begin the strike at 12:01 a.m. PT (3:01 a.m. EST).
"The studios made it clear that they would rather shut
down this town than reach a fair and reasonable deal,"
Patric Verrone said. The union will stage its first
pickets in New York and Los Angeles. Both sides agreed
to meet with a federal mediator on Sunday in a
last-ditch effort to avoid a strike. The 1988 writers
strike lasted 22 weeks and cost $500 million.

WRITERS STRIKE UNDERWAY

The first walkout by Hollywood writers in 20 years got
underway outside the "Today" show. A giant rat was put
on display as 40 people in Rockefeller Center shouted,
"No contract, no shows!" The "Today" show is not
affected because news writers are a different union.
The picket was set up in an area adjacent to NBC
studios. Los Angeles writers will picket 14 studios.
Writers and producers gathered Sunday. They met for 11
hours before East Coast members of the writers union
announced that the strike had begun.

WRITERS STRIKE PROMPTS RERUNS

The strike will disrupt talk shows to soaps. Jay Leno
visited with strikers after NBC said his show would
rerun. CBS said "David Letterman" will repeat. KTLA-TV
reported "Ellen" fans were told there would be no
taping. Comedy Central said "Daily Show" and "Colbert
Report" would repeat. Strike will not immediately
impact movies or prime-time TV programs. Most studios
have scripts and  completed shows until next year. A
key factor is whether Hollywood Teamsters will honor
picket lines. Local 399 has a legal obligation to
honor its contracts but individuals are protected.

STRIKE EFFECTS PRIME TIME

The strike by writers halted production on 6 sitcoms
and more shows are likely to be halted. Networks are
expected to announce alternative programming as the
strike continues. Other shows were not immediately
affected, including "Ellen," which will continue
production. "I want to say I love my writers," Ellen
DeGeneres said. Nick Counter, chief negotiator for the
producers union, said he expected a long standoff.
Writers said the next move was up to the studios. No
new talks are scheduled.

TARGET PULLS VIOLENT GAME

Target Corp. said Wednesday it pulled "Manhunt 2" from
its stores due to gruesome content that can be
unlocked by hackers. In "Manhunt 2," by Rockstar
Games, prisoners go on a rampage after escaping from
an asylum. Players take the escapees' point of view.
The game is rated "mature" by Entertainment Software
Rating Board. "Target strives to provide merchandise
that will appeal to a wide variety of guests," the
retailer said. "We also want guests to be comfortable
with the purchasing decisions they make at Target."

E-Poll has got to be the most lucrative program I have
joined. You earn points for taking surveys. The
questions are about your TV viewing habits.

My Coke Rewards is my newest program. Do you drink
Coke products? That is all it takes to earn great
prizes. You can even redeem the same day you join.

Memolink has been the least lucrative recently. This
likely due to SPAM filters. But this was one of my
first programs and earned me several gift cards.

My Points has also one of my first programs. I am
earning my points everyday here. While this has been
successful for me, shoppers could earn much more.

Recently, I have been trying to hook some paid
webmaster customers. Wish me luck.

See you next week.
