'ENCHANTED' CASTS BOX-OFFICE SPELL

Audiences fell under the spell of "Enchanted," a
fairy-tale romance that debuted at #1 and led
Hollywood out of its box-office doldrums over the
Thanksgiving holiday.

Starring Amy Adams as a princess exiled to Manhattan
by her fiance's wicked stepmother, "Enchanted" took in
$35.3 million over the weekend and $50.05 million
since debuting Wednesday, according to estimates.

Sony Screen Gems' holiday tale "This Christmas," whose
cast includes Delroy Lindo, Regina King, Mekhi Phifer
and Idris Elba, opened at #2 with $18.6 million for
the weekend and $27.1 million since Wednesday.

Hollywood had been in a box-office funk this fall, but
the two movies paced the industry to a healthy
Thanksgiving, with the top-12 movies pulling in $218.1
million from Wednesday to Sunday, up 6% from the
holiday period last year.

"That's good for an industry that's been in a
downtrend for almost 2 months," said Paul
Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.
"Thanksgiving sets the tone for the rest of the year
and the holiday season in general. This was a key
weekend, and it delivered."

"Enchanted" had the second-best 5-day Thanksgiving
debut ever, behind $80.1 million haul of Disney's
"Toy Story 2." Disney released all 5 of the
top-grossing movie debuts over Thanksgiving, with
"Unbreakable," "A Bug's Life" and "101 Dalmatians"
trailing "Toy Story 2" and "Enchanted."

"It's a really good place to launch a movie," said
Chuck Viane, distribution head for Disney. "When you
get a movie as strong and well-playing as this, it
bodes well for us right through the Christmas
holiday."

Among other new wide releases, 20th Century Fox's
video-game adaptation "Hitman" debuted at #4 with $13
million over the weekend and $21 million since
Wednesday. The movie follows the exploits of a
genetically engineered assassin.

Warner Bros. drama "August Rush" opened at #7 with
$9.4 million for the weekend and $13.3 million since
Wednesday. "August Rush" stars Freddie Highmore and
Robin Williams in the tale of an orphaned prodigy.

The Stephen King adaptation "The Mist," a fright flick
distributed by MGM for the Weinstein's Dimension Films
banner, premiered at #9 with $9.1 million for the
weekend and $13 million since Wednesday.

Third King adaptation from director Frank Darabont
("Shawshank Redemption" and "Green Mile"), "The Mist"
stars Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher
and Toby Jones trapped after their town is engulfed in
a haze filled with terrifying creatures.

Horror films generally are trashed by critics, but
"The Mist" earned fairly positive reviews, much like
Dimension Films' summer hit "1408," also based on a
King story. Bob Weinstein said that could mean a
longer shelf life for "The Mist" the same way "1408"
hung on in theaters.

"It just stuck around, and hopefully, we'll be around
for several weeks," Weinstein said. "We're just so
thrilled to be in the Stephen King business."

Expanding nationwide after 2 weeks in limited release,
Miramax's "No Country for Old Men" came in at #10 with
$8.1 million, raising its total to $16.6 million.
Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the crime saga stars
Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at
U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By
Numbers.

01) "Enchanted" @ $35.3 million.

02) "This Christmas" @ $18.6 million.

03) "Beowulf" @ $16.2 million.

04) "Hitman" @ $13 million.

05) "Bee Movie" @ $12 million.

06) "Fred Claus" @ $10.7 million.

07) "August Rush" @ $9.4 million.

08) "American Gangster" @ $9.2 million.

09) "The Mist" @ $9.1 million.

10) "No Country for Old Men" @ $8.1 million.

HOWIE MICHAEL MANDEL II

The story goes that Howie Mandel, who ran a carpet
business, began his show biz career at the Comedy
Store while on vacation. Goaded on by friends, a
producer spotted him, hired him for an appearance on
"Make Me Laugh," and the rest is history.

Born in Toronto, CA in 1955, Howie graduated to TV
shows and Vegas gigs. Six years on, "St. Elsewhere"
(1982) not only increased his visibility but earned
him Emmy nominations. His affinity for children led
him to "Bobby's World" (1990).

His film stardom has been elusive with A Fine Mess
(1986), Walk Like a Man (1987) and Little Monsters
(1989) failing to click. But kids enjoyed his cuddly
voice as Gizmo, in the Gremlins (1984) film series.

Following his own talk show "The Howie Mandel Show"
(1998), Howie had a full time schedule of concerts
and comedy specials. In addition to stand-up, he has
his own popular game show, Deal Or No Deal, on NBC.

CYRUS HOPES TN LANDS 'HANNAH'

Billy Ray Cyrus wants his daughter's "Hannah Montana"
film to be shot in Tennessee. The film is scheduled to
shoot in April and expected to be released in 2009.
The movie is centered on the Stewart family's return
to Tennessee. Cyrus family has a home there and was in
town for Thanksgiving. "The thing of it is, Walt
Disney really wants to film this movie in Tennessee,"
Billy Ray Cyrus said. Louisiana has an aggressive
program to bring films to the state. Tennessee only
offers rebates and sales-tax breaks. Cyrus said he
thinks Tennessee can compete.

PITT BACKS OUT OF FILM

Brad Pitt has backed out of a Universal Pictures movie
set to begin filming this year. "State of Play" was to
star Pitt as a political consultant-turned-journalist
who helps investigate the death of a congressman's
mistress. The actor left the production Wednesday,
Daily Variety reported. "Brad Pitt has left the
Universal Pictures production of 'State of Play,'" the
studio said. "We remain committed to this project and
to the filmmakers, cast members, crew and others who
are also involved in making the movie. We reserve all
rights in this matter."

NELSON IS DOG'S BEST FRIEND

Willie filmed a PSA supporting an anti-dogfighting
bill moving through Georgia Legislature. In the ad,
Nelson looks into the camera while "Georgia on My
Mind" plays. "Dogfighting is against the law in
Georgia, but the laws are so weak, the beautiful state
of Georgia has become a haven for dogfighters from
around the country," he says. Utah-based Best Friends
Animal Society  produced the spot and asked Nelson to
participate.

SEINFELD BUZZED THROUGH ISRAEL

Jerry Seinfeld visited Israel for the first time in
decades to promote Bee Movie. Few entertainers meet
the prime minister and president. Seinfeld saw both
and toured the Israeli Holocaust memorial. Seinfeld
seemed awed by his reception. He said it was quite a
contrast to his last trip in 1971 as a 15-year-old
volunteer. "I would be in the fields, and nobody
wanted my autograph and nobody wanted to take their
picture with me," he told reporters. "They just let me
hack away at those banana leaves, and no, I didn't
meet the prime minister even once."

SORRY, LOIS. 'SUPERMAN' MARRIED.

It was a Thanksgiving weekend wedding for "Superman
Returns" star Brandon Routh (28) & Courtney Ford (29).
They married at El Capitan Ranch, according to People
magazine and The Insider. The couple met four years
ago. The bride wore a Junko Yoshioka sheath dress with
Chantilly lace and platinum beading, and the groom
wore a cashmere suit. In a People interview, Routh
called Ford his personal kryptonite, saying,
"She brings me to my knees."

ESTRADA BACK IN INDIANA AGAIN

Erik Estrada is back in Muncie for training to keep
the reserve officer status he earned as part of the
canceled CBS show "Armed & Famous." "When I make a
commitment to be somewhere, it's done, like gold,"
Estrada told The Star Press. "And I hope, 30 or 40
years from now, God willing, that when it's time to
put me in my grave, I'll go in my Muncie uniform and
badge." Estrada will participate in various training
events and ride with officers, said Police Chief Joe
Winkle. Erik also intends to help with Muncie Police
Department's "Shop with a Cop" charity event.

WEB PINCH-HITTERS 4 LAUGHS

As the strike nears the one-month point, a certain
void in pop culture is becoming palpable. Many TV
shows are stuck in reruns. In the meantime, many Web

FOR "THE DAILY SHOW" FANS

Satire junkies should make a beeline for the Onion's

their strike experience.

FOR "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" FANS

There are several places to find sketch comedy online,
including the Web site for "SNL." But not to be
forgotten is Jack Handey's "Deep Thoughts" site.
Though many assume that with a name like Handey, the
comic couldn't possibly be real, he is real - and has
contributed humor pieces for the New Yorker.

NO DEAL YET IN LABOR TALKS

Striking movie and television writers failed to reach
a deal with producers after meeting into the evening
Tuesday on a second day of renewed contract talks.
Both sides agreed to reconvene at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
The Writers Guild went on strike Nov. 5 over payment
for work aired on the Web. After weeks of writers
picketing in front of studios and bitter words traded
on both sides, producers and writers had agreed to
restart negotiations Monday.

STUDIOS SEND WRITERS OFFER

Hollywood studios presented a new contract offer to
striking writers Thursday. Writers said the proposal
amounted to rollbacks and said studios should adopt
their counteroffer. "The entire value of the New
Economic Partnership will deliver more than $130
million in additional compensation above and beyond
the more than $1.3 billion writers already receive
each year," the Alliance of Motion Picture and
Television Producers said. The writers said their
plan, presented Thursday, would cost producers $151
million over three years.

HOLIDAY VIDEO GAMING GUIDE

Holidays have always been a time to gather around the
dinner table, Christmas tree, or fireplace. Why not
make it your gaming console? Led by family-friendly
Nintendo Wii, video games have become a socially
responsible way to pass the time. From simulators to
quiz shows, here are ways to play together.

"ROCK BAND SPECIAL EDITION"

The originators of "Guitar Hero" have conceived one of
the most expensive video games. For half the price of

with foot pedal, drum sticks and microphone. Rock Band
includes 58 play-along tracks and you can always

"GUITAR HERO 3: LEGENDS OF ROCK"

New this time around are online guitar battles and
original recordings. The likenesses of rockers such as
Slash, who offer finger-flexing challenges, are
another addition. Despite the upgrades and download
packs, GH 3 feels like a struggling comeback tour.

CONSOLES: Xbox 360 & PS 3, MSRP: $99.99, RATED T)

NINTENDO WII ZAPPER

Buy this chunk of white plastic, snap in a Wii remote
and a nunchuk, and viola! Now you've got a gun, and it
works well with first-person shooters like "Medal of
Honor: Heroes 2." The Zapper ships with "Link's
Crossbow Training" for target practice.

CONSOLES: Wii, MSRP: $24.99, RATED T)

"SCENE IT? LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION"

This movie-trivia game leaped from DVD to Xbox 360.
What's cool here are 4 wireless buzzers. Has a wide
variety of question formats. Quirk: video challenges,
in which you watch a movie clip and answer questions,
had nothing to do with the clip shown.

(CONSOLE: Xbox 360, MSRP: $59.99, RATED T)

"BUZZ!: THE MEGA QUIZ"

If your trivia knowledge extends across the Atlantic,
this British import for PlayStation 2 with more than
5,000 questions on current events, music, sports and
more. Includes 4 wired buzzers. You plug in another
set of 4 buzzers (not included) for 8-person matches.

(CONSOLE: PS 2, MSRP: $39.99, RATED E-10).

"THE EYE OF JUDGEMENT"

Players deal coded cards onto a fabric mat where an
included camera scans them. It sends the information
to the screen where your forces are pitted against
your opponent's. Surprisingly fun as long as you play
against a real person.

+===================================+
Our blog has been a raving success. You may not know
it from the lack of comments. The traffic count for
our blog far exceeds that of our web sites.

Speaking of comments. Currently, anyone can comment.
This is leading to offensive and junk posts that I am
deleting. If this continues, I may need to change the
settings. Sorry for any inconvenience.

As noted before, I have been recruiting webmaster
work. And I am still watching my nephew everyday. So I
have very little time for our own web sites. The
newest changes will go live before 2008.

See you next week.
Rewind,
Paul @ Reel 2 Reel
