'LEGEND' DEBUT IS BOX OFFICE LEGEND

Warner Bros. "I Am Legend," starring Will Smith,
debuted with $76.5 million, the biggest December
opening ever and a personal best for the box-office
champ, according to estimates.

"It's no wonder Will Smith feels so lonely. Everyone
else on Earth is in the movie theater," said Paul
Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers.

The 20th Century Fox "Alvin and the Chipmunks,"
starring Jason Lee and the cartoon critters, opened
No. 2 with $45 million. The two films combined to give
Hollywood a year-end surge.

"Forty-five million acorns," said Chris Aronson,
senior vice president of distribution at 20th Century
Fox. "Chipmunks are diurnal animals and they do
hibernate, but not right now."

Overall business soared, with the top 12 movies taking
in $153.6 million, up 39% from the same weekend a year
earlier, when Smith was No. 1 with a $26.5 million
debut for "The Pursuit of Happyness."

The previous No. 1 movie, New Line Cinema's fantasy
"The Golden Compass," nose-dived in its second
weekend, coming in third with $9 million, down 65%
from its $25.8 million debut a week earlier.

"The Golden Compass," which cost $180 million, has
done $90 million so far overseas but has proven a dud
domestically with just $41 million.

On the other hand, "I Am Legend" smashed Smith's
personal debut record, exceeding the $52.1 million
opening weekends of "I, Robot" and "Men in Black II,"
his previous bests. "Legend" outdid the $72.6 million
premiere of 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return
of the King," the previous best December opening.

"It's nice to be in the Will Smith business," said Dan
Fellman, distribution head for Warner Bros. "He is
just the No. 1 box-office star in the world today."

Based on the Richard Matheson novel filmed before as
Vincent Price's "The Last Man on Earth" and Charlton
Heston's "The Omega Man,""I Am Legend" casts Smith as
a scientist fighting off the vestiges of humanity,
people transformed by the plague into vampire-like
creatures.

Two Golden Globe nominees just hitting theaters did
well in their second weekends.

Focus Features'"Atonement" - leading the Globes with 7
nominations, including best drama and acting honors
for Keira Knightley and James McAvoy - pulled $1.85
million in 117 theaters. That gave "Atonement" an
average of $15,835, compared to $21,224 in 3,606 for
"I Am Legend."

Fox Searchlight's "Juno," a teen-pregnancy comedy
whose nominations included best comedy or musical and
an acting honor for Ellen Page, grossed $1.44 million
in 40 theaters for a $36,018 average.

"Atonement" and "Juno" expand into nationwide release
over the next 3 weekends.

Another Golden Globe nominee, "The Kite Runner,"
debuted strongly with $450,970 in 35 theaters for a
$12,885 average. The film follows an emigrant to
America who returns home to rescue the son of a
childhood friend.

Francis Ford Coppola's first film in 10 years, "Youth
Without Youth" from Sony Pictures Classics, debut at
$27,815 in 6 theaters, averaging $4,636. The film
stars Tim Roth as an elderly scholar whose youth is
restored by a lightning strike.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday @
U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By
Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "I Am Legend" @ $76.5 million.

02) "Alvin and the Chipmunks" @ $45 million.

03) "The Golden Compass" @ $9 million.

04) "Enchanted" @ $6 million.

05) "No Country for Old Men" @ $3 million.

06) "The Perfect Holiday" @ $2.97 million.

07) "Fred Claus" @ $2.3 million.

08) "This Christmas" @ $2.3 million.

09) "Atonement" @ $1.85 million.

10) "August Rush" @ $1.8 million.

CHRISTOPHER CROSBY FARLEY

DOB:  February 15, 1964, Madison, Wisconsin
DOD:  December 18, 1997, Chicago, Illinois (accidental
opiate/cocaine intoxication and coronary
atherosclerosis)

Christopher Crosby Farley, who was born on February
15, 1964, grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. He studied
theatre and communications on Marquette University.
After finishing University Chris was in the cast of
the Second City Theatre, where he was discovered by
the producer of the great comedy-show "Saturday Night
Live" (1975), Lorne Michaels. Chris worked on
"Saturday Night Live" (1975) for five years during
which he appeared in movies like Wayne's World (1992),
Coneheads (1993), Billy Madison (1995) and finally
Tommy Boy (1995), with his comic partner and SNL cast
member David Spade. The duo later made one more movie
called Black Sheep (1996). From that time on, Chris
was one of the big comedy stars, and his fame was
growing and growing.

After some more time, he made another "lone" movie,
Beverly Hills Ninja (1997), which featured former SNL
member Chris Rock. Farley was made even more famous,
but with his growing fame, his problems grew bigger as
well; he didn't want to be the "fat guy who falls
down" any longer. Chris had several other problems,
too, with alcohol and drug dependency. On December
18th, 1997, he died from a heroin (opiate) and cocaine
overdose in his apartment in Chicago, where his body
was found by his brother John the next day. Chris'
weigh of 296 pounds was a contributing factor to his
death, but according to his autopsy the alcohol,
marijuana and Prozac that was also found in his body,
were not. Less than two months prior to Farley's
death, he had appeared alongside Chevy Chase on what
would be Farley's only SNL show as host. Not unlike
his idol John Belushi, he was credited for one more
appearance after having left SNL and died at age 33.
His death cause was also the same. In the year after
Chris' departing, the movie Almost Heroes (1998),
where he plays the leading role alongside Matthew
Perry was released. He also makes cameo appearances in
Dirty Work (1998)

Hard 'Hobbit' to Break: Jackson's In

Dec 18, 2:56 PM (ET)

By JAKE COYLE

NEW YORK (AP) - Bilbo lives!

After publicly feuding for more than a year, "Lord of
the Rings" director Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema
have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The
Hobbit," a planned two-film prequel to the blockbuster
trilogy.

Jackson, who directed "Rings," will serve as executive
producer for two "Hobbit" pictures. They will tell the
story of how the young hobbit Bilbo Baggins originally
came to possess the nefarious One Ring that Frodo, his
adopted heir, needed three films to dispose of.

A director for the films has yet to be named.
Production is tentatively set to begin in 2009 with a
release planned for 2010, and the sequel following in
2011.

Relations between Jackson and New Line soured after
"Rings" despite a collective worldwide box office
gross of nearly $3 billion. Jackson shepherded
Tolkien's Middle-Earth saga to a combined 17 Academy
Awards including best picture for 2003's "The Lord of
the Rings: The Return of the King." The trilogy also
includes 2002's "The Lord of the Rings: The Two
Towers" and 2001's "The Lord of the Rings: The
Fellowship of the Ring."

"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our
differences behind us, so that we may begin a new
chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson
said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our
journey through Middle Earth."

Late last year, acrimony between the 46-year-old
Jackson and New Line became very public, with the
studio announcing they would move forward with "The
Hobbit" without him. Jackson sued New Line over the
amount he was paid - including DVD payments - for "The
Fellowship of the Ring," the first installment of the
trilogy.

"The low point was when we both started getting a
little too personal about this whole thing," said New
Line co-chairman and co-CEO Bob Shaye on Tuesday.
"From my own perspective, I realized that I shouldn't
be so thin-skinned about everything that goes on in my
professional life."

Jackson's suit, the two sides announced Tuesday, has
been settled. The terms of the settlement weren't
announced, though Shaye cheerfully said: "One of the
key terms was we all shake hands with each other."

In his statement, Jackson thanked Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
Studios (MGM) Chairman and CEO Harry Sloan for helping
him and New Line "find the common ground necessary to
continue that journey."

New Line, which is owned by Time Warner, holds the
rights to produce "The Hobbit," while MGM, which is
owned by a consortium including Sony and Comcast, has
the right to distribute it. The two studios will split
financing and distribution costs, with New Line
handling distribution in North America and MGM
distributing internationally.

Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot
simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the
Rings" films were made all at once. Shaye and Sloan
both said it was Jackson's idea to divide the story,
adapted from Tolkien's first book about Middle Earth
(which was about half the length of any from the
trilogy that followed).

The film's production schedule is subject to how long
the writers strike lasts, which some forecast could
continue for many months. There isn't currently a
script for either "Hobbit" film, and producers will be
unable to even approach writers until the strike is
over.

"If the writers strike drags on, then everything can
change in terms of the time table," Sloan said
Tuesday.

Sloan added that some patience has been necessary for
making "The Hobbit" happen: "We've always taken the
position that we wanted Peter to be involved in this
project, but it's taken some time to work out the
differences."

Jackson, who directed "King Kong" after finishing the
trilogy, is currently finishing shooting for "The
Lovely Bones," based on Alice Sebold's novel.

The three "Lord of the Rings" films rank among the 25
most lucrative films of all time, made more
financially successful by the risky strategy of
shooting all three together. The production budget for
the trilogy has been estimated at around $300 million.

Tolkien's fantasy epic has been a cultural juggernaut
since its publication in the 1950s, inspiring
everything from the ubiquitous "Frodo Lives!" graffiti
in the '60s and '70s to the Dungeons and Dragons
phenomenon of the '80s. With the franchise now
considered one of the most bankable projects in
Hollywood, the "Hobbit" films will be expected to
match the blockbuster success of "Rings."

JUDGE DROPS BALDWIN WARRANT

Dec 17, 7:32 PM (ET)

An arrest warrant for Daniel Baldwin was canceled
Monday after he told a judge he missed a hearing in a
drug case because he was in Canada. His probation was
reinstated by Judge Nancy Newman after she accepted he
missed a progress report on his drug rehab because he
was at a film shoot in Toronto. Baldwin said he told
his probation officer he wasn't going to make the Dec.
7 court date. Newman cautioned Baldwin to alert the
court directly about absences. The actor's lawyer,
Grant Hoagland, said Baldwin will complete his rehab
this month. He is due in court March 4.

"This is the real deal," said Margera. "I just want to

MCCONAUGHEY INJURED IN TRAINING

Dec 18, 8:19 AM (ET)

Matthew McConaughey was in stitches - literally -
after training for his upcoming fighter flick. The
actor cut his face while preparing for his role in
"The Grackle," a new movie from his J.K. Livin
Productions, his publicist, Alan Nierob, said Monday.
Nierob said McConaughey had been training Ultimate
Fighting Championship-style. He did not know when and
where the injury occurred. Photos posted Monday on
celeb gossip Web site X17 show McConaughey wearing a
bandage over his left eye. The shots were snapped
after he delivered a eulogy for Evel Knievel.

COPPOLA: NO TAKES IN LIFE

Dec 16, 3:02 PM (ET)

Francis Ford Coppola says little would change if he
were given a chance to do his life over, like the
central character in "Youth Without Youth." "It would
be the same life," the director says. "When I die, I
am not going to be there saying 'Oh, I wish I had done
this, and I wish I had done that.' Because I did it."
The director says that goes for his movies, too.
"Movie-wise, there is nothing I wouldn't do again.
It's not possible to make one perfect movie every
time. I don't know of anyone who has done it. I guess
(Akira) Kurosawa has come the closest."

CARTER & BURTON WELCOME BABY

Dec 17, 3:44 AM (ET)

Helena Bonham Carter & Tim Burton welcomed their
second child, a girl, in London. They are "absolutely
delighted," Karon Maskill told People magazine. "It's
a lovely Christmas present for the family," Maskill
said. Carter had joked before the birth that the baby
might grow tired of musicals. "Maybe the baby's going
to come out with his hands on his ears: 'Shut up!'"
she said. The couple have a 4-year-old boy, Billy.
"Sweeney Todd" hits theaters this week.

Dec 15, 3:04 AM (ET)

DirecTV acquired ReplayTV brand from D&M Holdings.
Financial terms were not disclosed. ReplayTV, along
with TiVo, debuted its DVR in 1999. ReplayTV beat TiVo
to market, but TiVo prevailed. TiVo is in a patent
fight with EchoStar Dish Network. TiVo won a verdict,
which will force EchoStar to stop selling DVR boxes.
But that ruling is on hold, pending an appeal. In
fact, DirecTV used to partner with TiVo, but now it
uses NDS Corp. Just this month, DirecTV extended that
contract to 2013. D&M will operate the service
contracts for existing ReplayTV subscribers.

PC GAME SKEWERS POLITICIANS

Dec 13, 5:34 AM (ET)

Tired of watching Mitt & Mike, Hillary & Rudy, and
Colbert & Coulter limit their swipes to words? Then
download "DC Smackdown." "It's a real simple game -
we're talking Street Fighter, circa 1994," said Dave
Holbrook, freelance producer and animator, who made it
with help from friends. "It's nothing crazy, but it's
a fun little commentary on what's going on."
Available for PCs, the game costs $4.99 to download.
If it sells, Holbrook wants to expand to the Xbox or
Wii and include historic politicians and pundits.

MTV & BRUCKHEIMER 2 MAKE GAMES

Dec 20, 7:24 AM (ET)

Jerry Bruckheimer is branching into video games.
Bruckheimer will set up a gaming lab with MTV Games.
"It's pretty exciting what's going on in that arena,"
Bruckheimer said. MTV did not disclose terms of the
agreement. "He's been able to kind of reinvent genres.
We're hoping he'll do the same in the video game
space," said Bob Picunko, MTV's VP of games. Steven
Spielberg, Peter Jackson and the Wachowski brothers
have deals to develop games.

Do you subscribe to cable or satelite TV? Then you can
avoid the DTV converter box. Their signal will be
converted for you, automatically.

To see actual HDTV programming, you must have a TV
with an HDTV tuner. With DTV, there is sinal or no
signal. Mo more weak signals like analog.

Again, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
