Hey Adventureland Friends: Ugh, Will this life ever end? this computer is so painfully slow. The computer has Vista, the operating system from hell. It hogs RAM and hates my printers and digital cameras. Atleast this has Windows XP. Each of them needs more work. And I need to replace my telephone wiring. There is too much to do and too little time or money to do it. I hope things improve in the spring. If I can continue to nurse this crap. http://advland.bravehost.com http://reel2reel.bravehost.com http://advland.braveblog.com http://www.adventurelandvideo.com There is good news. I have some of my favorite football movies below. Next month I plan to have some of my favorite basketball movies. While this is not a complete newsletter, there is more here than there has been in recent weeks. My goal is a complete newsletter for next week. Blingo is the place to be on friday for movie buffs. The prizes awarded are movie tickets. This is now owned by Publishers Clearing House. http://www.blingo.com/friends?ref=LJt9EIXsXBaBuP-fW5DaMrkkYSk +===================================+ Find your showtimes @ Adventureland http://advland.bravehost.com +===================================+ <> <> <> BOX OFFICE <> <> <> +===================================+ 'HANNAH' HOLDS BOX-OFFICE GOLD First, she sells out a nationwide concert tour. Now Miley Cyrus and alter-ego Hannah Montana are selling out movie theaters in such record-breaking style that the film's run has been extended. "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," the 3-D film chronicling her recent tour, was the biggest debut ever over Super Bowl weekend, pulling in $29 million, according to estimates. Distributor Disney planned to have the movie out for a week but now has decided to keep it in theaters until it runs its course. The concert film - featuring 15-year-old Cyrus as herself and her Disney Channel character Hannah - filled the void for fans unable to catch one of the live shows on the Hannah Montana tour. The digital 3-D technology also gave fans the illusion of being at a live show, said Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion-picture group, who visited several theaters where the movie played. The film surpassed the previous Super Bowl record of $21.6 million set by "When a Stranger Calls," which opened over the same weekend 2 years ago. Lionsgate's "The Eye," a remake of the Japanese hit, opened at #2 with $13 million. "Eye" stars Jessica Alba as a blind violinist whose vision is restored by a transplant that results in terrifying visions. "Desperate Housewives" Eva Longoria Parker delivered a dud with her first top-billed "Over Her Dead Body," which opened with $4.6 million to finish at #11. Distributed by New Line, the movie stars Parker as a dead woman who tries to break up a romance between her fiance and his new girlfriend. Playing in just 683 theaters, "Hannah Montana" broke another record: never before has a movie in so few cinemas premiered at the top of the box office chart. The movie averaged a whopping $42,460 a theater, compared to an average of $5,337 in each of 2,436 cinemas for "The Eye" and about $2,327 in each of 1,977 theaters for "Over Her Dead Body." The grosses for "Hannah Montana" were boosted by higher admission prices charged because of the 3-D format. Tickets for "Hannah Montana" ran $15, roughly 50% more than the top price for other movies. The success of "Hannah" showcased the prospect for an upcoming wave of 3-D releases, both new movies such as Jules Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and rereleases such as the "Toy Story" films in 3-D. Digital projection allows sharper and more realistic images than film 3-D, a 1950s fad used occasionally over the decades. Now, many big studio films come out in 3-D versions. Those releases typically do 3 times more business than 2-D versions, said Michael Lewis, co-founder of Real D, whose digital-projection 3-D technology was used in "Hannah Montana" and will be used in "U2 3D," now playing in limited release. The 3-D technology could turn theaters into venues showing live concerts and sporting events, Lewis said. "There are a lot of places, a lot of small towns where we have Real D in place where U2's not going to go, Hannah Montana's not going to play there," Lewis said. "They'll be able to see it in theaters, and in my view maybe with a better seat and better experience than if they were actually there live." Hollywood's roll continued, with the top-12 movies taking in $101.5 million, up 43% from Super Bowl weekend a year ago. Movie attendance so far this year is up nearly 11%, according to Media By Numbers. Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday. 01) "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus" @ $29 million. 02) "The Eye" @ $13 million. 03) "27 Dresses" @ $8.4 million. 04) "Juno" @ $7.5 million. 05) "Meet the Spartans" @ $7.1 million. 06) "Rambo" @ $7 million. 07) "The Bucket List" @ $6.9 million. 08) "Untraceable" @ $5.4 million. 09) "Cloverfield" @ $4.9 million. 10) "There Will Be Blood" @ $4.8 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ Coming 2 DVD in May 2008. "Either live for something, die for nothing - it's your choice," the actor-director said. "Students have now used this film as a rallying point and are using the quote, thinking maybe the American military will intervene and save them," he said. He issued a challenge to the ruling military. "If they think this movie is a fantasy, I welcome the opportunity to let me come over there and walk around the country without armed guards following me every inch of the way," he said. http://www.sylvesterstallone.com PLESHETTE GETS HOLLYWOOD STAR Suzanne Pleshette got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, less than 2 weeks after she died. On what would have been her 71st birthday, Pleshette received the 2,355th star. Bob Newhart attended the unveiling, which had been planned before her death. "The only thing that exceeds her talent and her beauty was her bravery, because she was one of the greatest women," Bob said. Marcia Wallace, another "Newhart" co-star said, "She left footprints on my heart, and now we can all leave our footprints on her star. She'd love it." JOLIE 'MIGHTY HEART' AWARD Angelina Jolie received Santa Barbara International Film Festival's "Performance of the Year" award. She actress was honored Saturday for her portrayal of Mariane Pearl, wife of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, in "A Mighty Heart." The bargaining committee and East and West Coast guild chapters plan to review the proposal before sharing details at membership meetings in New York and Los Angeles. In an e-mail to members, negotiations chief John Bowman said the guild wouldn't make a formal decision on the deal until after the meetings. If writers like what they hear, the closed-door meetings could be a major step toward ending the strike. The outcome of the meetings could determine networks will be able to salvage the 2007-08 season and if the Feb. 24 Academy Awards ceremony proceeds without pickets. +===================================+ <> <> <> GAME TALK <> <> <> +===================================+ GUINNESS BOOK OF GAME RECORDS Feb 6, 3:00 PM (ET) By PETER SVENSSON NEW YORK (AP) - Yes, Billy Mitchell is still the king of Kong. In the first "Gamer's Edition" of Guinness World Records, due out March 11, Mitchell, of Hollywood, Fla., ranks as the top-scoring player of the arcade version of "Donkey Kong." Mitchell's score is 0.1 percent ahead of Steve Wiebe of Redmond, Wash., whose quest to unseat Mitchell was the subject of the 2007 documentary "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters." Other highlights of the Gamer's Edition 2008: - The biggest-selling video game of all time is "Super Mario Bros.," released by Nintendo Co. in 1985. It sold 40.2 million copies (though some were bundled with Nintendo systems). - The highest one-day gross for a game is $170 million at the U.S. "Halo 3" launch on Sept. 25, 2007. - The controversial crime-adventure series "Grand Theft Auto" has the most guest stars in a video game series. Its 339 voice actors include Dennis Hopper, Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Liotta and Ice T. - The largest virtual beer festival takes place once a year in "World of Warcraft." The online game's two warring factions share a truce along with the brews. For the record, Wiebe did manage to beat Mitchell's 1985 score in "Donkey Kong," but his top rank stood for just four months before the colorful Mitchell struck back with a score of 1,050,200. Unmentioned in the movie was the fact that the record-holder when Wiebe started his attempt was not Mitchell but Timothy Sczerby of Auburn, N.Y. He had beaten Mitchell's 1985 record in 2000. Sczerby is listed in the Guinness book as the current No. 3, but his name is misspelled in the advance copy obtained by the Associated Press. To keep score for "Donkey Kong" and a variety of other classic games, Guinness relied on Iowa-based Twin Galaxies, which started out in the 80s as an arcade chain but soon turned into national scoreboard and referee organization for electronic games. Twin Galaxies supplied the Guinness Book of World Records with video-game scores in the 80s, but Guinness stopped using them in 1988, as the arcade gaming craze started to subside. http://gamers.guinnessworldrecords.com/ http://www.twingalaxies.com http://www.billyvssteve.com/ +===================================+ <> <> TIME CAPSULE <> <> +===================================+ February 1, 1893 - Thomas Edison completed the world's first motion picture studio in West Orange, NJ.
