Martin Lawrence's family reunion comedy "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" opened at #2 with $17.1 million, according to studio estimates. Disney's "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus" - previous weekend's top movie - fell to #3 with $10.5 million, a sharp drop from its $31.1 million opening. The movie has grossed $53.4 million after 10 days. Warner Bros. "Fool's Gold" came in a bit under the $23.8 million opening of McConaughey & Hudson's hit romance "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," which debuted over the same pre-Valentine's Day weekend in 2003. With Valentine's Day on Thursday, the studio is counting on "Fool's Gold" to hold up well, said Jeff Goldstein, Warner VP of distribution. Critics hated "Fool's Gold" but audiences were eager to catch McConaughey & Hudson, who play a divorced couple reunited in a quest for 18th-century treasure. "A great marketing campaign, two appealing stars, and reviews be damned," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "Heading into Valentine's week, it's sort of a natural." Universal's "Roscoe Jenkins" features Lawrence as a talk show host who reluctantly heads back to the family homestead for his parents' 50th anniversary. Picturehouse's "Vince Vaughn's Wild West Comedy Show: 30 Days & 30 Nights - Hollywood to the Heartland," tanked with $507,000. Playing in 962 theaters, the documentary averaged $527 a cinema, compared to $7,043 in 3,125 locations for "Fool's Gold" and $7,175 in 2,387 theaters for "Roscoe Jenkins." Paris Hilton's comedy "The Hottie and the Nottie" did even worse, bombing with $25,000 in 111 theaters for an average of about $225. Distributed by Regent Releasing, the movie stars Hilton as a bombshell who refuses to date until her ugly best friend finds love. Focus Features' action comedy "In Bruges," with Colin Farrell & Brendan Gleeson as hit men laying low in Belgium, opened in limited release, pulling in $471,200 in 28 theaters to average $16,829. Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday. 01) "FOOL'S GOLD" @ $22 million. 02) "WELCOME HOME ROSCOE JENKINS" @ $17.1 million. 03) "HANNAH MONTANA & MILEY CYRUS" @ $10.5 million. 04) "THE EYE" @ $6.6 million. 05) "JUNO" @ $5.73 million. 06) "27 DRESSES" @ $5.7 million. 07) "THE BUCKET LIST" @ $5.3 million. 08) "RAMBO" @ $4.1 million. 09) "MEET THE SPARTANS" @ $4.075 million. 10) "THERE WILL BE BLOOD" @ $4.073 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ Coming 2 DVD in June 2008. After earning a Law degree from Northwestern, Springer worked as a campaign aide for Senator Robert Kennedy’s presidential campaign. Springer spearheaded an effort to lower the national voting age from 21 to 18, eventually testifying in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee in support of the ratification of the 26th amendment. Springer’s political career blossomed when, at age 33, he was elected Mayor of Cincinnati, becoming one of America’s youngest mayors. Springer left politics after losing the battle for the governor’s office and launched his career in broadcasting. He began as a news anchor, eventually winning 7 Emmy Awards for his nightly commentaries. “The Jerry Springer Show” first aired in 1991. NOTABLES: Born in a London Underground station after his family fled the Holocaust. The family - mom Margot, dad Richard, and sister Evelyn - moved to Queens, New York in 1949 when Jerry was 5. "The Jerry Springer Show" was developed by WLWT-TV to replace its landmark "The Phil Donahue Show" (1970) (Donahue & Springer worked for WLWT-TV). Springer was forced to revamp its serious format in an attempt to save the show from being dropped by syndicators. A self-described "country singer-songwriter," he opens for Billy Ray Cyrus when scheduling allows, and has even performed at Johnny Depp's Viper Room. QUOTABLES: "I would never watch my show. I'm not interested in it." "If a wrestler could be governor, I could be president!" http://www.jerryspringertv.com/ http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001761 +===================================+ <> <> <> SNACK BAR <> <> <> +===================================+ VALENTINE'S DAY CHOCOLATE CUPS 2 Cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips 1 Tablespoon vegetable shortening 8 Small round balloons Line a baking sheet with wax paper. In a medium saucepan, melt the chocolate and shortening over low heat for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring just until the chocolate melts and the mixture is smooth. Allow to cool slightly so that the chocolate is not hot enough to pop a balloon, but is still pourable. Inflate the balloons to about the size of an orange; tie knots to seal. Starting halfway from the knotted end, spoon the chocolate over the outside of the balloons, completely covering the outside bottom half of each. Allow the excess chocolate to drip off the bottom of the balloons and place them on the lined baking sheet. Chill for 25 to 30 minutes, until the chocolate is firm. Carefully pop the balloons and remove them from the chocolate cups. Chill until ready to serve. NOTES: Serve each chocolate cup filled with about 1 cup of your favorite mousse, pudding, or ice cream. Then, he was denied access to his home country of Canada to work on Lost Boys 2: The Tribe. This direct-to-DVD movie is slated for this summer. The Lost Boys put Haim & Feldman on the map as "The Two Coreys." This marks the first time they have worked together on a movie since Feldman's directorial debut 'Busted.' A&E has announced a second season for "The Two Coreys." http://www.ShockTillYouDrop.com AN 'ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT' MOVIE? Sometimes a TV show comes along that is ahead of its time. Perfect examples are Freaks and Geeks and My So-Called Life. Another is Arrested Development. Seems the cancelled comedy will live on in a big screen movie. Mitch Hurwitz & Ron Howard are in the early stage of developing a film based on the Bluth family. News was conveyed by Jason Bateman: "I can confirm that a round of sniffing has started. I can speak for the cast when I say our fingers are crossed." http://www.eonline.com 'RING' BATTLE: TOLKIEN VS. NEW LINE Estate of J.R.R. Tolkien is suing New Line Cinema, claiming the company hasn't paid it a penny from the $6 billion the films grossed. Suit claims New Line was required to pay 7.5%, but they only received an upfront payment of $62,500. The writer's estate, The Tolkien Trust, and original publisher HarperCollins filed the lawsuit. It could block the prequel to the films. Plaintiffs seek $150 million and a court order giving them the right to terminate any rights New Line may have. Such an order would scuttle plans by New Line to make a 2-film prequel based on "The Hobbit." SPIELBERG QUITS THE OLYMPICS Steven Spielberg is ending his involvement as an artistic adviser for the Beijing Olympics. The film director made the decision after Mia Farrow and several humanitarian groups assailed him for working with Chinese organizers. At issue for both Farrow and Spielberg is China's close relationship with Sudan. China buys two-thirds of Sudan's oil. In turn, China sells weapons to the Sudanese government. Spielberg had already urged President Hu Jintao to use China's influence during the Olympics to help in Darfur. 'PASSION' PLEA 4 GIBSON CASH A screenwriter claims he was misled by mel Gibson into accepting a small payment for "The Passion of the Christ." Benedict Fitzgerald claims that when he was asked to write the script, Gibson told him the movie would cost $4 to $7 million. Fitzgerald alleges Gibson promised profit would be distributed to people who worked on it. Fitzgerald claimed he agreed to "a salary substantially less than what he would have taken had he known the true budget for the film," which the lawsuit claims had a budget of $25 to $50 million. The movie grossed several hundred million. +===================================+ <> <> <> TECH TALK <> <> <> +===================================+ YAHOO ACQUIRES VIDEO SERVICE Undeterred by the threat of a hostile takeover, Yahoo completed an acquisition of its own by buying Maven Networks for $160 million. This marks Yahoo's latest attempt to snap out of a 2-year funk that culminated in a takeover offer from Microsoft. Yahoo rejected the bid, prompting Microsoft to raise the possibility of taking its offer - $44.6 billion - direct to the shareholders. Microsoft indicated it's not budging, calling the proposal "full and fair." Talks to buy Maven began before Microsoft announced its bid. Maven helps television and movie studios. Maven works with media outlets including CBS, Gannett, News Corp., Hearst and Sony. Yahoo plans to retain Maven's 70 employees as it lays off 1,000 Yahoo workers. DEMOCRATS URGE COUPON EXTENSION Americans worried about losing their TV signals when analog goes dead now have a new concern: the coupons for the converter boxes have a short shelf life. When consumers get their 2 $40 coupons, they will have 3 before the coupons expire. House Democrats from the Energy & Commerce Committee urged NTIA, the federal agency overseeing the coupon program, to extend the program for consumers whose coupons expire. Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Circuit City pledged to sell converter boxes, estimated to cost $40 to $70. The committee wants consumers who reapply for coupons to get an additional 90 days. The 90-day provision was added when Republicans were in charge. NTIA says 3 months is "reasonable" because it allows plenty of time for consumers to receive and use the coupons. +===================================+ <> <> <> TRADE TALK <> <> <> +===================================+ WRITERS VOTE 2 END STRIKE A 3-month walkout ended Tuesday when writers voted to lift their strike. It clears the way for the Academy Awards to be staged Feb. 24 without pickets or boycotts. Writers did not vote on the deal, reached between union negotiators and studios. The guild will mail contract ratification ballots. Hollywood's labor pains may not be over. The contract between studios and Screen Actors Guild expires in June. +===================================+ <> <> <> GAME TALK <> <> <> +===================================+ +===================================+ <> <> TIME CAPSULE <> <> +===================================+ February 9, 1960 - The first star was placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
