'21' IS THE BOX-OFFICE HIGH ROLLER

Movie buffs laid their money down on "21," a gambling
romp that was the weekend's box-office high roller
with $23.7 million, according to studio estimates.

Starring Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth & Jim Sturgess as
geniuses who make a killing at Vegas' blackjack
tables, Sony's "21" bumped off "Dr. Seuss' Horton
Hears a Who!", which had been No. 1 for 2 weekends.

"Horton Hears a Who," distributed by 20th Century Fox,
slipped to second with $17.4 million, raising its
total to $117.3 million. It is the first movie this
year to pass the $100 million mark.

Despite holdover crowds for "Horton," overall business
dipped. The top 12 movies took in $90 million, down
23% from the same weekend last year, when "Blades of
Glory" was No. 1 with $33 million.

Hollywood started 2008 with an uptick in January, but
revenues have trailed off since. Movie admissions had
been up 10% in early February but now are 2.6% behind
2007's, according to Media By Numbers.

By this time last year, Hollywood had churned out a
blockbuster with "300," which eventually topped $200
million, and other hits that included "Wild Hogs" and
"Meet the Robinsons."

"Last year was very, very strong at this point. It's
made comparisons very tough," said Paul Dergarabedian.
"We're not that far into the year, so every down
weekend has a huge impact on the bottom line."

This weekend's other new movies had so-so openings.
Debuting @ #3 with $9.5 million was MGM-Weinstein Co.
release "Superhero Movie."

Paramount's "Stop-Loss," starring Ryan Phillippe as an
Iraq War veteran sent back against his wishes for
another tour of duty, opened @ #8 with $4.5 million.

"Friends" star David Schwimmer's directing debut,
"Run, Fat Boy, Run," was a dud, taking $2.4 million to
finish out of the top 10. Released by Picturehouse,
the movie stars Simon Pegg and Thandie Newton.

The audience for "21" was split almost evenly between
men and women and those older and younger than 25,
according to Sony.

"One of the coolest things is it really did play to
everyone. It got male, female, young, old," said Rory
Bruer, Sony's head of distribution.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. &
Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers.
Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "21" @ $23.7 million.

02) "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" @ $17.4 million.

03) "Superhero Movie" @ $9.5 million.

04) "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns" @ $7.8 million.

05) "Drillbit Taylor" @ $5.8 million.

06) "Shutter" @ $5.3 million.

07) "10,000 B.C." @ $4.9 million.

08) "Stop-Loss" @ $4.5 million.

09) "College Road Trip" @ $3.5 million.

10) "The Bank Job" @ $2.8 million.

+===================================+
CHRISTIAN RUDOLPH EBSEN JR.

DOB:  April 2, 1908 - Belleville, IL
DOD:  July 6, 2003 - Torrance, CA

Buddy achieved the most fame playing Jed Clampett, the
poor mountaineer who struck it rich on the 1960’s TV
sitcom "The Beverly Hillbillies." Slated to play the
"Tin Man" in The Wizard of Oz, Ebsen had to leave the
film after shooting only a few scenes because he had
an allergic reaction to the metallic dust makeup. He
later went on to play the title role on the TV crime
drama, "Barnaby Jones." Ebsen also starred in "Banjo
on my Knee," "Davy Crockett: King of the Wild
Frontier" and "Breakfast at Tiffany’s." He also played
the role of Muff Potter in the 1973 TV movie Tom
Sawyer. Ebsen passed away due to complications from
pneumonia.

FACTOIDS:

His father owned a dance studio, and when Ebsen was a
young boy insisted that he take dance lessons.

He began his career as a dancer in the late 1920s and
later formed a vaudeville act with sister Vilma Ebsen.
In 1935 he and his sister went to Hollywood, where
they were signed for MGM's Eleanor Powell movies.

In the 1930s, Disney animators filmed him dancing in
front of a grid to "choreograph" Mickey Mouse's dance
steps for the Silly Symphony cartoons.

Attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida
shortly before starting his film career.

One chorus of "We're Off to See the Wizard" in the
movie and soundtrack retain Ebsen's vocals as the Tin
Man, recorded before he left the production.

Footage of Ebsen as the Tin Man still exists, and was
included as an extra with the U.S. 50th anniversary
video release of The Wizard of Oz (1939).

An outspoken Republican, he helped defeat Nancy Kulp,
his "The Beverly Hillbillies" co-star, in her 1984
Democratic congressional bid in Pennsylvania. Ebsen
made radio ads accusing Kulp of being "too liberal"
and not good for the district. They did not speak for
years, but eventually settled their differences.

After seeing Ebsen in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," the
creator of "The Beverly Hillbillies" wanted him to
play Jed Clampett. Ebsen was thinking of retiring, but
changed his mind after reading the script.

In 1938 MGM offered him a 7-year contract, starting at
$2,000 a week but required him to give the studio
absolute control over his career. He rejected and MGM
blackballed him. His film career went into eclipse for
nearly 20 years, until Walt Disney hired him to play
Georgie Russel in "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild
Frontier."

He served in the Coast Guard during WWII as the
executive officer on the Pocatello, a submarine chaser
in the North Pacific.

Owned a 36-acre ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Set up the Ebsen School of Dance in Pacific Palisades,
California.

COMCAST CAVES ON FILE-SHARING

Under pressure from federal regulators, Comcast
reversed its stance over hampering file-sharing by its
subscribers. They will work with BitTorrent to improve
the transmission and it will stop delaying file
transfers. Comcast will also start offering faster
Internet services in Minnesota's Twin Cities region,
with plans to extend the system to its entire service

triple Comcast's priciest option to date.

AN UPDATE ON ROGER EBERT

Roger Ebert will resume writing reviews later this
month, but will not rejoin his syndicated TV show.
In a letter published in Chicago Sun-Times, the film
critic and co-host of "Ebert & Roeper" said that his
ability to speak was not restored. "But I still have
all my other abilities, including the love of viewing
movies and writing about them," Ebert said. His 10th
annual Ebertfest runs April 23-27.

"CROC HUNTER" DAD LEAVES ZOO

The father of late Steve Irwin said he quit the
family's Australian conservation park because he had
become a "disrupting influence," although the widow of
the khaki-clad "Crocodile Hunter" denies a rift.
Australian media have speculated for months that Terri
Irwin had fallen out with Bob following his son's
death. Steve Irwin's parents established a reptile
haven in the early 1970s, and handed control of it to
him two decades later.

WILL EASTWOOD DO ANOTHER DIRTY HARRY?

Rumors abound that the Clint Eastwood film titled Gran
Torino is actually another in the Dirty Harry series.
Warner Bros. recently announced Gran Torino as a
fast-tracked project to be directed by and starring
Clint Eastwood. No information on the film's plot was
given. Eastwood also has the drama The Changeling,
starring Angelina Jolie, coming to theaters Nov. 7.
Gran Torino has been slotted for a December release.
Warner Bros. also announced new DVDs of the previous 5
Dirty Harry movies for a June 3 release. The movies
getting the deluxe treatment are: Dirty Harry, Magnum
Force, The Enforcer, Sudden Impact, and The Dead Pool.
The movies are also being released as a collection on

CASTING NEWS: SEARCHING 4 'FLETCH'

Remember back in the Summer of 2000 when Kevin Smith
had secured the rights Fletch Won and Jason Lee was
set to take over for Chevy Chase? Of course, this was
long before Lee became a household name thanks to My
Name Is Earl and Miramax balked at having an "unknown"
top-lining their new franchise. Some 8 years later and
Jason Lee has a successful TV show. Perhaps Miramax
should of listened to Kevin Smith. Joshua Jackson
tells MTV that he's no longer up for the part. "In the
way that rights are assigned in this business, when it
didn’t happen last summer, I think the rights went
back to different person. So the guy that offered me
the job, I don’t think owns it anymore, which is
unfortunate."

SANDLER BREAKS ANKLE PLAYING B-BALL

Adam Sandler broke his ankle playing basketball - but
still won the game - according to a statement sent to
The Associated Press from Sandler's representative.
Sandler, who starred in "Happy Gilmore" and "I Now

due out later this year, Sandler plays as a hotel

'HIGH SCHOOL 3' FILMS IN APRIL

The "High School Musical" gang returns to Utah this
month for their senior year. Unlike its predecessors,
the third installment in the series will be filmed
during the school year at East High School in Salt
Lake City. School District spokesman Jason Olsen says
setting up will begin in a couple weeks and shooting
will start toward the end of the month. Much of the
filming will take place before and after school to
minimize disruptions. The first 2 movies brought $8
million and 180 jobs to the state during filming. The
third project is slated to cost $13 million.

WAYANS DROP OAKLAND STUDIO BID

The Wayans brothers dropped their bid to build a movie
studio at the former Oakland Army base over conflicts
with the port of Oakland. Wayans business partner
Britten Shuford said they failed to get a commitment
from the city to preserve the site's San Francisco Bay
views. Port plans to stack storage containers that
would block the views. Officials say the Wayans'
decision to back out after long-standing negotiations
clears the path for other proposals. Oakland Mayor Ron
Dellums released a list of 13 developers interested in
building on the site.

SEINFELD UNHURT AFTER FLIPPING OLD CAR

Jerry Seinfeld was in a rollover wreck but unhurt
after the brakes failed on one of his vintage cars.
Seinfeld was alone when the brakes on his 1967 Fiat
BTM failed, East Hampton Police Chief Todd Sarris told
New York Post. Seinfeld tried the emergency brake, to
no avail, and swerved to keep the car out of an
intersection, Sarris said. The 2-door sedan flipped
and came to a stop yards from the highway, Sarris
said, adding that the comic "probably avoided a very
serious accident." Seinfeld did not require medical
attention and returned home. "He was a little shocked
when he walked in and it started to dawn on him what
happened," his wife, Jessica, told the Post.

POSSIBLE 'STAR TREK' SEQUELS OPTIONED

Simon Pegg confirmed in an interview with MTV Movies
Blog that he's signed on for 3 Star Trek movies. The
concept of signing on for multiple movies caused him
some trepidation. "I thought about it for a bit
because you have to commit to a series of films and
that puts you in a situation where the studio has some
control over what you do. I called up J.J. and I said,
'the idea is amazing but I'm worried.' And he said,
‘what's the worst that can happen? We hang out every
three years and make a fun film?'" Of course, any
potential sequels would be dependent on their
predecessors being a box office hit.

Thurber penned the screenplay for Dodgeball. Magnum
P.I. is expected in theaters next year.
