'21' DOUBLES UP WITH $15M WEEKEND

Gambling tale "21" kept up its winning streak as it
took in $15.1 million to stay on top for a second
weekend, leaving "Leatherheads" & "Nim's Island" to
scrimmage for second place.

"Leatherheads" - 1920s football directed by Clooney -
opened with $13.5 million, well below Universal's
expectations.

20th Century Fox's "Nim's Island" was right behind
with $13.3 million. The family adventure centers on a
bold girl alone on an island and her e-mail pen pal,
an obsessive-compulsive, shut-in author.

"Leatherheads" and "Nim's Island" were so close that
their rankings could switch after final weekend
numbers are released Monday.

"Leatherheads" is Clooney's third directing effort, a
commercial turn after his acclaimed "Good Night, and
Good Luck" and "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."

Yet "Leatherheads" earned mixed reviews and mainly
drew theatergoers in their 30s and 40s, failing to
connect with younger crowds, according to Universal.

"I'm disappointed for us, I'm disappointed for George.
I think he's a great guy and think he's got tons of
directing talent," said Nikki Rocco. "I wish I could
have that crystal ball and tell you what went wrong."

He said some parents who might otherwise have gone to
see "Leatherheads" may have been tied up taking
children to see "Nim's Island" or "Horton Hears a
Who!"

20th Century Fox, which had been tracking "Nim's
Island" slightly ahead of "Leatherheads," was pleased
with the results of its film, said Chris Aronson.

"This movie was targeted for families, and we hit the
families," Aronson said of "Nim's Island."

Sony's "21," featuring Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth and
Jim Sturgess in a Vegas blackjack romp, raised its
10-day total to $46.5 million.

Overall, it was another dreary weekend, where business
has lagged nearly every weekend since January. The top
12 movies took in $80.9 million, down 27% from the
same weekend last year.

Revenues are at $2.24 billion this year, off 1.8% from
2007, according to Media By Numbers. Factoring in high
ticket prices, movie attendance is running 5% behind
last year's.

This weekend's other new wide release - Paramount's
"The Ruins," about tourists who discover ancient evil
during a jungle trip - debuted at 5 with $7.8 million.

In narrower release, Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones
concert "Shine a Light," distributed by Paramount
Vantage, did fair business with $1.5 million.

Wong Kar Wai's romantic drama "My Blueberry Nights,"
starring singer Norah Jones and Jude Law, Rachel
Weisz, Natalie Portman and David Strathairn, took in a
$73,742 opening in 6 theaters.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. &
Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers.
Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "21" @ $15.1 million.

02) "Leatherheads" @ $13.5 million.

03) "Nim's Island" @ $13.3 million.

04) "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" @ $9.1 million.

05) "The Ruins" @ $7.8 million.

06) "Superhero Movie" @ $5.4 million.

07) "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns" @ $3.51 million.

08) "Drillbit Taylor" @ $3.5 million.

09) "Shutter" @ $2.9 million.

10) "10,000 B.C." @ $2.8 million.

LEATHERHEADS

Romantic comedy set against the backdrop of America's
pro-football in 1925. Dodge Connolly, a football hero,
is determined to guide his team to packed stadiums.
After they lose their sponsor and the league faces
collapse, Dodge convinces a college football star to
join them.  Welcome to the team Carter Rutherford. A
golden-boy war hero, Carter has good looks and speed.
This new champ is too good to be true, and Lexie aims
to prove that. Lexie, a newswoman, suspects there are
holes in Carter's story. While she digs, the teammates
become serious off-field rivals for her affections. As
pro-football becomes less like the freewheeling sport
he knew and loved, Dodge must fight to keep his guys
together and to get the girl. Finding that love and
football have a surprisingly similar playbook, he has
one maneuver he will save for the fourth quarter.

Rated PG-13 for brief strong language.

"...a nimble throwback to the screwball comedies of
the 1930s..." -USA Today,
Claudia Puig

exactly dull, just mild." -Boston Globe,

CELL-PHONE CINEMA GETS BIG BOOST

Recognizing that it's not much fun to watch movies on
a cell phone, a number of companies are developing
projection gadgets. "Pico projectors" are small enough
to carry around in a shirt pocket. Eventually, they
will be tiny enough to be built into phones and media
players. Microvision expects their projector to sell
for $300 to $400. Because cell phones have a battery
and other electronics necessary, it would increase the
price of a cell phone by $100.

DOLLY RETURNS EAGLE 2 THE WILD

Dolly Parton visited the woods overlooking Douglas
Lake near the Great Smoky Mountains. But she knew she
wasn't the star of this show. It was a young American
bald eagle. The eagle was blown from its nest several
weeks ago in Florida. It was returned to the wild by
American Eagle Foundation, based at her Dollywood
theme park. Some 90 eagles have been released from the
same spot since the 1990s. But this marked the first
time that she had seen it in person. Before she helped
open the cage and watched the bird soar away, Parton
named it "Liberty." "I thought that sounded better
than Baldy," she said.

SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM SLATED 2 REOPEN

Smithsonian's National Museum of American History is
scheduled to reopen in November. The museum has been
closed since 2006 for renovations. It was scheduled to
re-open this summer. But acting Smithsonian Secretary
Cristian Samper told congress that asbestos and lead
paint caused setbacks for the project. The museum's
interior is being redesigned with a special gallery to
showcase "The Star-Spangled Banner" and a skylight to
bring more light into a central atrium. Even with the
museum being closed last year, the Smithsonian says it
counted 24.2 million visitors in 2007 - an increase of
1 million over 2006. Congress is considering a $34
million increase in funding to help the Smithsonian
address a backlog on facility repairs.

DICAPRIO BUYS 'GREEN' NYC CONDO

Every time he comes home, Leonardo DiCaprio (33) is

conscious actor has bought an apartment in Riverhouse,
an eco-friendly building overlooking the Hudson River.
The purchase was confirmed on Friday by Christopher
Daly, president of Sheldrake Organization, developer
of the Battery Park City complex. Occupancy is slated
for this summer. The 264-unit glass tower overlooks
the river and a park, and boasts low emission paints,
fresh filtered air system, water treatment facility
and rotating solar panels. The high-rise features an
indoor 50-foot lap pool, media cafe, fitness center,
landscaped terrace - and dog spa. The building also
will house the City Bakery and a branch of the New
York Public Library. DiCaprio has served on the board
of Global Green USA. He also owns a hybrid car and had
solar panels put on his Los Angeles home.

RADCLIFFE 2 MAKE BROADWAY DEBUT

Daniel Radcliffe, the star of the "Harry Potter"
movies, will make his Broadway debut playing the
disturbed stable boy in Peter Shaffer's play,
"Equus." Radcliffe earned rave reviews for his
performance in the London production of the play. He
received loads of media attention for appearing naked
onstage - a departure from his wholesome image as the
boy wizard. "Equus" begins previews Sept. 5 for a
22-week run at the Broadhurst Theatre. Play opens
Sept. 25 - Feb. 8, 2009. Thea Sharrock directs.
Richard Griffiths, who portrays Harry's mean Uncle
Vernon in the "Harry Potter" movies, reprises his
London role as the psychiatrist who treats the stable
boy.

CRUISE 'VALKYRIE' PUSHED BACK AGAIN

United Artists said 4it has pushed back the release of
"Valkyrie," starring Tom Cruise, from Oct. 3 until
President's Day weekend starting Feb. 13. It's the
second time the movie has been pushed back. It was
originally slotted for June. The film, to be
distributed by MGM, is the second attempt by Cruise
and Paula Wagner to revive UA. The studio's first
movie, 'Lions for Lambs,' was a critical flop. It is
estimated to have lost $30 million. MGM said the move
was to take advantage of the holiday. The movie,
directed by Bryan Singer, is based on a real-life plot
to assassinate Adolph Hitler.

MYERS 2 HOST 2008 MTV MOVIE AWARDS

Mike Myers, star of "Wayne's World," "Austin Powers" &
"Shrek," will host the 2008 MTV Movie Awards. The 17th
annual show will air live June 1. The event is the
network's nod to typical awards shows. Categories for
Golden Popcorns include best kiss, best villain & best
comedic performance. Nominees will be announced in
May. Myers, star of the upcoming "The Love Guru,"
hosted the show in 1997. "Love Guru" opens in theaters
June 20. "Mike Myers blew us away last time he hosted
the MTV Movie Awards," Van Toffler, president of MTV
Networks Music, Logo & Films Group, said. "He keeps
creating iconic film characters that have been etched
in the minds of MTV's audiences forever," Toffler
said.
Mark Burnett of "Survivor" fame is executive producer.
"Hosting the MTV Movie Awards is like a party, but
without having to do beer runs in your mom's minivan;
we do beer runs in Will Smith's 4-story motorhome,"
Myers (44) said.
