The movie, released by Sony's Screen Gems banner, stars Brittany Snow as a teen terrorized by a psycho killer. It overcame the critical drubbing handed to most fright films. "Audiences today, they're so savvy in regards to what they want to see or don't want to see. Particularly a younger audience, they pretty much make up their own mind," said Rory Bruer, Sony head of distribution. With prom season also at hand, that "brings an element of fun," Bruer said. Opening at #2 was 20th Century Fox's "Street Kings," a cop drama starring Keanu Reeves & Forest Whitaker that took in $12 million. The new movies bumped Sony's "21," which fell to #3 with $11 million after 2 weekends at #1. The Vegas blackjack tale raised its total to $62.3 million. The weekend's other new wide release, Miramax's "Smart People," opened at #7 with $4.2 million. "Smart People" stars Dennis Quaid, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ellen Page and Thomas Haden Church. Hollywood's box office doldrums continued, with the top 12 movies taking in $82.6 million, down 16% from the same weekend last year. This year's attendance is running 6.6% behind 2007's. That gap could widen when the industry's busy summer season arrives. The superhero saga "Iron Man," starring Robert Downey Jr., is expected to put up big numbers to kick off the summer on May 2. But it is unlikely to approach the $151.1 million debut of "Spiderman 3" a year ago. "We're counting on 'Iron Man' to be the film that turns things around, but the box office was so strong a year ago that comparisons are going to be really tough," said Paul Dergarabedian of Media By Numbers. "I think we're going to see a lot of downtrending weekends even into summer because last year was so strong, especially in May." Overture Films' drama "The Visitor" opened solidly with $88,383 at 4 theaters in NYC & LA. "The Visitor," which expands gradually over the next few weekends, stars Richard Jenkins. Also in limited release, Fox Searchlight's "Young @ Heart" took in $52,312 at 4 theaters over the weekend and $63,606 since opening Wednesday. The film follows a chorus of elderly singers who sing punk & pop songs by modern bands. It expands to 28 more theaters Friday. Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. & Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers. Final figures will be released Monday. 01) "Prom Night" @ $22.7 million. 02) "Street Kings" @ $12 million. 03) "21" @ $11 million. 04) "Nim's Island" @ $9 million. 05) "Leatherheads" @ $6.2 million. 06) "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" @ $6 million. 07) "Smart People" @ $4.2 million. 08) "The Ruins" @ $3.3 million. 09) "Superhero Movie" @ $3.1 million. 10) "Drillbit Taylor" @ $2.1 million. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ DVD release August 2008. Now, Donna and her friends must find a way to escape the sadistic rampage of an obsessed killer. Rated PG-13 for violence and terror, some sexual material, underage drinking, and language. Her notable early film roles were in the films The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell in 1955 and Johnny Cool in 1963. She is best remembered, however, for her leading role as Samantha, the witch who would cast spells with the twitch of her nose, on the 1960s television sitcom "Bewitched." Following "Bewitched," her first and only TV series, Montgomery turned to made-for-TV movies, many of which won critical praise like A Case of Rape (1974), The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975) and Black Widow Murders (1993). She also narrated the movie The Panama Deception which won an Academy Award in 1993. Elizabeth died of cancer in 1995. NOTABLES: Ms. Montgomery refused to do her famous nose twitch after her "Bewitched" (1964) show went off the air. Montgomery spent weekends and summers at her family farm in Patterson, New York. Referenced in episodes of "Bewitched" as "Patterson Garage" or "Cushman Cosmetics", Cushman is the dirt road on which the several hundred acre Montgomery estate was located. A bronze statue of Elizabeth as Samantha Stephens riding sidesaddle on her broomstick now resides in a downtown park in Salem, Massachusetts, home to the infamous witch trials of the 17th century. Samantha & Darrin were the first American TV couple to sleep in the same bed. Prior to 'Bewitched', all TV couples slept in separate beds. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000548/ http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800017542 http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=2215 http://www.bewitched.net/ +===================================+ <> <> <> SNACK BAR <> <> <> +===================================+ CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY BROWNIE This is a delightful blend of raspberries & chocolate. Combining the companies would create a 9,300-store chain that could sell portable devices and entertainment for them, much like Apple stores. The larger Circuit City stores would have movie-rental stores inside, Blockbuster locations would offer limited electronics. Mark J. Wattles, founder of the Hollywood Entertainment video-rental chain, said Blockbuster is moving in the right direction "in the face of severe challenges." TEEN BEATING RAISES QUESTIONS Eight Florida teenagers charged with beating another teen so they could post the "animalistic" attack on YouTube got exactly what they had wanted - worldwide exposure. But that doesn't mean YouTube or any other media company should get the blame, media experts say. In fact, they have a duty to share the video, said Kelly McBride at the Poynter Institute think tank. Those who blame YouTube should blame themselves first, said Steve Jones, a communications professor. DISNEY'S NEXT 10 ANIMATED MOVIES Walt Disney detailed its next 10 animated movies. The line-up will feature mostly 3D films. Of the movies, 6 are from Pixar Animation Studios while the others are by Walt Disney Animation Studios. Toy Story 3 and Cars 2 are included in the mix. Blanchett (38) has delivered Ignatius Martin Upton in Sydney, said Tim McKeough, media relations manager at Sydney Theatre Company, where Blanchett & her husband are co-artistic directors. "All are well and very happy," McKeough said. The boy weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, he said. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd offered his congratulations, and said Blanchett would co-chair an arts panel at a national summit Saturday. Australia 2020 summit will gather 1,000 leading Australians to propose ideas for the future direction of the country, with panels including health, climate change, economy and the arts. Blanchett & husband Andrew Upton have 2 other sons: Dashiell (6) & Roman (3). The actress next appears with Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," due in theaters in May. BEDFORD NY TANGLES WITH CELEB Richard Gere, like Martha Stewart before him, is running into some zoning hurdles as he tries to put his imprint on the wealthy New York suburb of Bedford. The actor (58) & a partner opened a cafe & bakery and have plans for a luxury inn & restaurant. But their new fence may not pass, building inspector Richard Megna said. Bedford's rules call for a fence no higher than 4' along the street side of a property, he said, and Gere's is 5'. Gere's representatives have been trying to win a variance by landscaping the fence to make it look better, Megna said. No decision is likely before May 7. Bedford turned down Stewart's plan for a barn that would hold tractors, snowplows and forklift because it was too close to the road. PROSECUTORS SEEK MAXIMUM 4 SNIPES Federal prosecutors say Wesley Snipes should serve the maximum possible penalty for failing to file a tax return. Prosecutors say that Snipes' case "cries out" for him to serve the maximum, which is up to 3 years in prison. The star's lawyer says he has not reviewed the documents and will respond with a pre-sentencing memorandum of his own. Snipes was convicted of failing to file a tax return. He was acquitted of tax fraud & conspiracy charges. He will be sentenced April 24. 'X-FILES' MOVIE TITLE ANNOUNCED The truth is finally out there about the new "X-Files" movie title. The second big-screen spinoff of the paranormal TV adventure will be called "The X-Files: I Want to Believe." The title is a familiar phrase for fans of the series starring David Duchovny & Gillian Anderson. "I Want to Believe" was on a poster in the office where Mulder & Scully worked. This comes 10 years after the first film and 6 years after the finale, whose opening credits for much of its run featured the phrase "the truth is out there." Due in theaters July 25. It casts Mulder & Scully into a stand-alone, earth-bound story aimed at both fans and newcomers. Hardcore fans need not worry. The movie will be true to the spirit of the show. BRADY DIVORCE FINALIZED Wayne Brady is officially single again. The comedian has been living separately from his wife, Mandie, for 4 years, but the couple's divorce was just finalized this week. They married in April 1999 and officially separated in April 2006, citing irreconcilable differences. They have one daughter, 5-year-old Maile Brady. "Mandie is my best friend. We still love each other and we are raising our beautiful daughter Maile together as a team," Brady said in a statement issued by his publicist. Details about their child custody, child support and property-division arrangements were not made public. 'SCREAM QUEEN' HAZEL COURT DIES Hazel Court (82), who co-starred with the likes of Boris Karloff & Vincent Price in horror movies of the 1950s and '60s, has died. Court died of a heart attack at her home near Lake Tahoe, daughter Sally Walsh said. Court was best known for "The Raven." She co-starred with Price, Karloff & Peter Lorre in Roger Corman's take on the Edgar Allan Poe poem. "The Premature Burial," "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Curse of Frankenstein" & "Devil Girl from Mars" propelled her to cult status and brought fan mail even in her later years. "She'd probably get over 100 pieces of fan mail a month and she would reply to everyone," her daughter said. Court finished an autobiography, "Hazel Court - Horror Queen," which will be published in Britain. The daughter of a pro cricket player, Court was born Feb. 10, 1926. Court was a sculptor & painter too. Court is survived by daughters Walsh and Courtney Taylor, son Jonathan Taylor and stepdaughters Anne Taylor Fleming and Avery Taylor. BARDOT ON TRIAL 4 INCITING HATE Brigitte Bardot is back on trial in France, facing charges of fanning discrimination and racial hatred against Muslims. Prosecutors are seeking a 2-month suspended prison sentence and $23,900 fine against the former screen siren and animal rights campaigner. Bardot was not present for the hearing. A verdict is expected June 3. A leading French anti-racism group filed suit last year over a letter that Bardot sent to Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, and published in her foundation's journal. In the letter to Sarkozy, now the president, Bardot accused France's Muslim population of destroying France. French anti-racism laws prevent inciting hatred and discrimination on racial or religious or racial grounds. Bardot has been convicted 4 times for inciting racial hatred. +===================================+ <> <> <> TRADE TALK <> <> <> +===================================+ CONTRACT TALKS START 4 SAG Screen Actors Guild & Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers started contract talks. Improved compensation for online is a key issue. SAG officials indicate they're intent on negotiating a contract that betters the deals reached by writers and directors. Those unions won victories, including jurisdiction & compensation. Other issues could involve residuals & endorsements. SAG is negotiating without the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. AFTRA will begin talks April 28. SAG was confronted with a demand from 1,400 members that voting be limited to actors who work at least one day a year. With most members going without regular employment, some worry that their non-working counterparts would more readily vote for a walkout. SAG rejected the proposed change. SAG WILLING 2 DEAL WITH INDIE FILMS Screen Actors Guild cut a deal that allows its members work for an independent film company regardless of a future strike. The Film Department deal guarantees the completion of 9 movies. "Hopefully, they'll work things out and there won't be a strike, but if there is we'll be able to stay in business," Mark Gill, The Film Department's CEO, said. The union declined to discuss the deal. Daily Variety said SAG was offering deals to independent feature producers. Contract talks between SAG and the producers are scheduled to run through April 26. The producers then start talks with American Federation of Television and Radio Artists on April 28. It is unclear whether SAG's deal will exert any real pressure against the studios. Variety said AMPTP members have been holding off starting projects until after a new deal is set with the guild. +===================================+ <> <> <> TECH TALK <> <> <> +===================================+ COURT DENIES DISH PATENT APPEAL A federal appeals court said it won't reconsider a ruling favoring TiVo in its patent dispute with Dish Network. "Today's ruling brings us closer to resolution of EchoStar's infringement and confirms the strength of TiVo's Time Warp patent."
