Hey Adventureland Friends:

Happy Mother's Day to moms, stepmoms, mom-in-laws and
grandmas. Even foster moms, sisters or girlfriends. A
mom can be anyone who cares for family. Or, maybe you
have a special "Mr. Mom" to honor this day.

Melissa Gilbert is our Shining Star this week. Many
affectionately refer to her as "Half-Pint." Did you
know her company name is Half Pint Enterprises?

The Snack Bar this was supposed to run last week. I
thought this file had been deleted. Anyway, I hope you
enjoy the belated Kentucky Derby recipes.

Our Bookmark remains unchanged. This will allow you
ample time to explore the movie club idea. The idea
has had me pumped since I first read about it.

Blog Bytes explores mergers and aquisitions -- both
past and present. It seems that we could again face a
labor strike. Your next pizza could be a click away.

There is so much more too. Starting with Box Office

forget about the latest news and our DVD Showcase.

MARVEL TURNS 'IRON MAN' INTO GOLD

"Iron Man" was gold at the box office. The Marvel
Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr., hauled
in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and
$104.2 million since debuting Thursday, the
second-best premiere ever for a nonsequel.

The film also scored overseas with $96.7 million in 57
countries where it began opening Wednesday, putting
its worldwide total at $201 million.

The movie, distributed by Paramount, is the first
release by Marvel Studios, which has begun financing
its own productions after such studio-backed hits as
"Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four."

"We could not have hoped for a better way for Marvel
Studios to blast off," said David Maisel, chairman of
the unit, a division of Marvel Entertainment.

Debuting in second place with $15.5 million was Sony's
romantic comedy "Made of Honor," starring Patrick
Dempsey as a man who tries to woo his best pal after
she asks him to be "maid of honor" at her wedding.

"Iron Man," which won rave reviews from critics,
features Downey as arms designer Tony Stark, who
builds a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero,
mending his ways after he's taken captive and sees
firsthand the devastation his weapons cause.

The film is directed by Jon Favreau, and also stars
Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard.

Despite the "Iron Man" opening, Hollywood's overall
business was down compared to the same weekend last
year, when "Spider-Man 3" had a debut of $151.1
million. The top 12 movies took in $154.1 million, off
15% from a year ago.

"Nonetheless, 'Iron Man' did better than expected,"
said Paul Dergarabedian of Media By Numbers. "This is
certainly the shot in the arm the marketplace has
needed."

Movie attendance this year is running 6% behind that
of 2007, so the arrival of "Iron Man" may jump start
the box office as the busy summer season begins.

"If that first May movie is a big hit, it tends to
lead to a big summer," said Rob Moore of Paramount.
"There hadn't been a big event movie yet this year. So
you have the first event movie of summer, and people
go 'And I hear it's really good. All right, I'm in.'"

"Iron Man" was the 10th biggest opening of all time
and fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among
nonsequels, it came in behind the first "Spider-Man,"
which premiered with $114.8 million.

"If we have to, we're happy to come in second to
another Marvel property," Maisel said. "It emphasizes
how lucky we are to have such a powerful brand that's
not loved by just comic book fans but also general
movie fans."

The next Marvel production arrives in June with "The
Incredible Hulk," distributed by Universal and
starring Edward Norton.

In limited release, David Mamet's martial-arts drama
"Redbelt" opened with $68,646 in 6 theaters. Released
by Sony Pictures Classics, "Redbelt" stars Chiwetel
Ejiofor.

Paramount Vantage's "Son of Rambow," a comic tale of 2
British boys making their own "Rambo" movie, also
opened well with $52,549 in 5 theaters.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday - Sunday @ U.S. &
Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers.
Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "Iron Man" @ $100.7 million.

02) "Made of Honor" @ $15.5 million.

03) "Baby Mama" @ $10.3 million.

04) "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" @ $6.1 million.

05) "Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo" @ $6 million.

06) "The Forbidden Kingdom" @ $4.2 million.

07) "Nim's Island" @ $2.8 million.

08) "Prom Night" @ $2.5 million.

09) "21" @ $2.1 million.

10) "88 Minutes" @ $1.6 million.

May is racing month in my neck of the woods. We open
with the kentucky Derby and close with the Indy 500.
Here are 3 traditional recipes for derby weekend.

EARLY TIMES MINT JULEP

2 cups sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of fresh mint
Crushed ice
Kentucky Bourbon
Silver Julep Cups

Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water
together for 5 minutes. Cool, place in a covered
container with 6 or 8 sprigs of fresh mint.
Refrigerate overnight. Make one julep at a time by
filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one
tablespoon mint syrup and 2 ounces Kentucky bourbon.
Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost outside of cup.
Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

KENTUCKY BOURBON BALLS

1 stick butter
1 box powdered sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
4 T. Bourbon
4 oz. semi-sweet chocolate
4 oz. bitter chocolate

One day ahead: Cream the butter and the sugar. Add the
chopped pecans, mixing well. Add the Bourbon and
quickly shape into balls using about 1 teaspoon of the
mixture for each ball. Refrigerate overnight.

Next day: Melt both the chocolates in a double boiler
until the chocolate has a smooth consistency. Dip the
chilled Bourbon balls into the chocolate. Place the
candy on waxed paper in the refrigerator to harden.

MUSEUM WINNER'S PIE

1 stick butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup flour
pinch of salt
2 T. Kentucky Bourbon or 1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream butter and sugar.
Add beaten eggs, flour, salt and Kentucky Bourbon (or
vanilla) Add chocolate chips, and nuts. Stir well.

minutes, or until center is set. Serve with whipped
cream or vanilla ice cream.

WALKING MAY BE BEST 4 YAHOO & MICROSOFT

Sure, things look rough for Yahoo & Microsoft after
they couldn't agree on a deal. But in the long run,
Yahoo's rejection of Microsoft's acquisition offer
could turn out to be brilliant for both companies.
Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make.
Instead of turning into the next AOL Time Warner — a
deal regretted — perhaps Yahoo and Microsoft will be
like other companies that were better off after their
proposed linkage got scuttled.

PRODUCERS SUSPEND SAG TALKS

Producers broke off contract talks with Screen Actors
Guild, calling its demands "unreasonable." "With SAG's
continued adherence to unreasonable demands,
continuing negotiations at this time does not make
sense," the producers said. The guild responded by
saying the producers' decision was unfortunate. The
union's contract expires June 30. Producers offered to
resume talks May 28. No date has been agreed upon.

ONLINE PIZZA SALES ARE GROWING

Sometimes during peak hours, the phones are silent,
yet the cooks are busy keeping pace with customers.
That's because orders are rolling in through the net.
In the past 7 years, Papa John's has made a lot of
dough from online ordering - more than $1 billion.
Other chains in the pizza industry are tapping into
the technology craze. Dominos introduced the "Pizza
Tracker." Pizza Hut said it will soon unveil a new
method for ordering, dubbed "Pizza Hut Shortcut."

MICROSOFT, CHASING APPLE, IMPROVES ZUNE

Microsoft sent out software updates that added new
features to the Zune devices. Microsoft will sell TV
shows including "South Park" & "Battlestar Galactica"
for $1.99 each. In a victory over Apple, Microsoft
will carry NBC shows "The Office" and "Heroes." NBC
Universal pulled its shows from iTunes. The software
maker has a lot to do to catch Apple. Zune offers some
capabilities iPod doesn't. Zune Pass subscription
gives users access to every song in the catalog for
$14.99 per month. TV shows aren't available as part of
the subscription service, but Microsoft is looking at
making Zune Pass less expensive with more content.
Zunes can also synchronize wirelessly with PCs. Users
plug a Zune into its charger anywhere in range of
their home Wi-Fi and the device updates itself. One
update makes it possible to synchronize several Zunes
with the same computer. Another lets users choose new
content to send to a Zune next time it's in range.

ROCKER 2 RELEASE ARCHIVE ON BLU-RAY

Neil Young plans to release his entire music archive

Sun makes the Java that gives Blu-ray the interactive

The first installment of Young's archive will cover
1963 to 1972 & will be released as a 10-disc set this
fall on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records. The archives
will be released chronologically & include unreleased
songs, videos, handwritten manuscripts and more, in
addition to high-resolution audio. Fans can download
more songs, photos and tour information directly to
the Blu-ray discs as the content becomes available.
Earlier technology didn't offer the ability to browse
archive material while listening to songs in
high-resolution audio, Young noted. "Previous
technology required unacceptable quality compromises,"
he said.
"I am glad we waited and got it right."

'GRAND THEFT' TOPS $500M IN WEEK ONE

"Grand Theft Auto IV" raked in $500 million in its
first week, selling 6 million units worldwide. The
title from Take-Two received stellar ratings with
criticism. The title sold 3.6 million units on April
29, opening day, bringing in $310 million. This is $10
million more than what Microsoft's "Halo 3," took in
during its first week last fall. The game lifted sales
of Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3, the two consoles for
which it is available. Microsoft said Xbox 360 sales
jumped 54% and 2.3 million people played it on Xbox
Live. "Retailers say 4 out of 10 Xbox 360 sales
included a copy of 'Grand Theft Auto IV.' Sony's 10
largest retailers have "all seen a pretty substantial
lift" in PS3 sales. Take-Two is the subject of a $2
billion hostile buyout from Electronic Arts, which
Take-Two has repeatedly rebuffed as too low. Take-Two
shares recently traded at $26.30, above EA's offer of
$25.74 per share, which expires May 16.

Movies. You could say this is the athletic version of
Dead Poets Society or Mr. Holland's Opus.

DISTURBIA (2007)

A teen living under house arrest becomes convinced his
neighbor is a serial killer.

This suspenseful thriller will keep you on the edge of
your seat. Shia will appeal to both kids & teens. But
it maybe too much for some kids.

SAM'S SON (1984)

Michael Landon's semi-autobiographical sketch of his
earlier life. From meager beginnings to celebrity.

This is a solid, well scripted film with nothing to
conscern parents. A must see for Landon fans and a
should see for teens and parents.
