Subject: Reel 2 Reel Issue # 212 ~ Happy Birthday Koda Bear! - August29, 2008

Hey Adventureland Friends:

I dedicate this to my Koda Bear in recognition of his 2nd. birthday on August 31. My nephew shares this special day with Buddy Hackett (1924), Richard Gere (1949) and Debbie Gibson (1970).

His first pool party will have an Elmo. We waited to late for a shelter house. So thank you Cindy @ Auto Ranch for offering your shelter and pool. I hope to post some pictures soon.

This week is the Farmer's Pike Festival. Just down the road from where we aim to be living. They pride themselves on having acres of treasures and entertainment. It just down the road from where we aim to move soon.

Bravenet has recently unveiled new web building tools. So I am eager to get started a web site for 2009. For this reason, you may see random web site changes.

http://groups.google.com/group/adventureland-friends

This is our free members only community hosted by Google. Almost 5 of our nearly 300 subscribers have joined. I intended for it to be a small group, but there is certainly room for more of you.

Our Celebrity Spotlight shines on Elliott Gould this week. His credits cover everything - broadway, television and film. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Screen Actors Guild.

The Snack Bar has another tastey treat from our friend Patsy @ Pakadevas' Freebees. Prepare some Chocolate Surprise Sundaes for your next family movie night.

I ran into a cool bookmark this week. Fathead is the #1 brand of wall graphics. They are made of high quality, self-stick vynil that aheres to any smooth, dry surface. This is a great addition to your home theater.

Blog Bytes has almost ran out of gas. Well, the problem is not so much gas as it is time as usual. The topic of discussion is the tacky telcom boxes sprouting up in yards and on roadsides.

Join me in wishing a very Happy Birthday to Donna Pyper on September 5. She shares this special day with Jack Valenti (1921), Bob Newhart (1929), William Devane (1939), Raquel Welch (1940) and Tina Yothers (1973).

Add yourself to our Birthday Alarm today. Then you could find your name here with various celebrities. Provide only the info you feel comfortable sharing.

'THUNDER' CONTINUES 2 RUMBLE ON TOP

The action comedy "Tropic Thunder" weathered a rush of new movies to remain @ #1 for a second weekend with $16.1 million in ticket sales, according to estimates.

The Paramount-DreamWorks release - starring Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black as actors caught up in real battle while shooting a war movie - raised its 12-day total to $65.7 million.

Sony's campus comedy "The House Bunny," which debuted @ #2 with $15.1 million. "House Bunny" stars Anna Faris as an ostracized Playboy bunny who becomes den mother to a sorority of campus misfits.

Universal's "Death Race" - an update of 1975's "Death Race 2000," with Jason Statham starring as a driver in a kill-or-be-killed auto race of the future - opened at #3 with $12.3 million.

The weekend's other new wide releases, Ice Cube's sports drama "The Longshots" and Rainn Wilson's music comedy "The Rocker," opened weakly.

"The Longshots" - an MGM-Weinstein release starring Ice Cube as a former high school star coaching his niece, the first girl to play Pop Warner football - came in at #8 with $4.3 million.

20th Century Fox's "The Rocker," starring Wilson as an over-the-hill heavy-metal drummer who gets a chance at stardom with a high school band, took in $2.8 million to finish at #12.

After a run of blockbuster weekends, late summer was proving the usual dumping ground for modest movies as business slowed and audiences ease into back-to-school mode.

That opened the door for "Tropic Thunder" to repeat as the weekend's box-office leader.

"There isn't that divide where there's a couple of huge movies coming every week," said DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan.

Summer's biggest hit, "The Dark Knight," continued its climb up the box-office charts, placing #4 with $10.3 million. Warner Bros. Batman sequel has taken in $489.2 million on its way to becoming the second film ever to top $500 million, after "Titanic" ($600.8 million).

Overall movie revenues of $3.9 billion are slightly ahead of last summer's record pace. Higher admission prices mean the actual number of tickets sold is down 3% compared to summer 2007.

Still, Hollywood should finish with a box-office record and a second-straight summer topping the $4 billion mark.

"Thank you, 'Dark Knight.' That's added close to half a billion dollars," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers. "One film like 'The Dark Knight' can make a huge difference."

In limited release, Focus Features' comedy "Hamlet 2" pulled in $435,000. Starring Steve Coogan as a school drama teacher staging a campy, musical sequel to Shakespeare's play, "Hamlet 2" expands into nationwide release Wednesday.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

01) "Tropic Thunder" @ $16.1 million.

02) "The House Bunny" @ $15.1 million.

03) "Death Race" @ $12.3 million.

04) "The Dark Knight" @ $10.3 million.

05) "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" @ $5.7 million.

06) "Pineapple Express" @ $5.6 million.

07) "Mirrors" @ $4.9 million.

08) "The Longshots" @ $4.304 million.

09) "Mamma Mia!" @ $4.303 million.

10) "The Mummy: Dragon Emperor" @ $4.1 million.

ELLIOTT GOLDSTEIN  (ELLIOTT GOULD)

DOB:  August 29, 1938 - Brooklyn, New York

A tall and charming Brooklyn boy at heart, actor Elliott Gould carved a path into Hollywood with hulking, dark-haired looks that veered away from the traditional matinee archetype. His career began on Broadway, but Gould went on to briefly became the embodiment of a disenchanted youth culture in antiestablishment films such as "Bob & Ted & Carol & Alice" (1969) and "M*A*S*H" (1971).

http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/contributor/1800020189/bio

NOTABLES:

He and MASH (1970) co-star Donald Sutherland both own apartments in same Manhattan high-rise luxury building.

Was the first actor to play the character of Trapper John, in the film version of MASH (1970). Director Robert Altman originally wanted him to play Duke Forrest. It was only at his request that he played Trapper John.

Has hosted "Saturday Night Live" (1975) 6 times.

Director Ingmar Bergman denounced Gould as "difficult" after they worked together in Ber?ringen (1971) ("The Touch") in 1971, one of the great master's least memorable films.

The only actor to have a cameo appearance in more than one Muppet film: The Muppet Movie (1979) and The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984).

QUOTABLES:

Success didn't change me. I was already distorted before I became a star.

[1970] The Oscars are some sort of masturbatory fantasy. People think: an Academy Award -- now if I get a parking ticket I don't have to pay it. I don't put the Award down. But, at my sanest, I would rather have a good three-man basketball game than sit here in my monkey suit.

TELECOMS RAISE IRE OVER BOXES

The road to advanced video, Internet and phone services is bumpy - and the bumps can be almost as big as refrigerators. As companies race to upgrade services, they're installing boxes on lawns, easements and curbs. Several towns and residents are fighting back with cries of "Not in my front yard!"
AT&T's nearly fridge-sized units are drawing particular ire. A few caught fire or even exploded. Comcast has utility box problems of its own. Some residents got upset when new green boxes from Comcast popped up, sometimes between driveways. The boxes are about a foot tall and wide, and 2 feet long. Verizon Communications buried its boxes in town.

CONNERY LAUNCHES AUTOBIOGRAPHY

He's recognized around the world as James Bond. But in Britain, Sean Connery is a proud Scot. On Monday he returns home to launch his autobiography. "Being
a Scot" looks at Connery's life. "It will illuminate what Fountainbridge's most famous former milkman thinks of many aspects of Scottish culture and life, including sport, architecture, and of course the gothic tendency in Scots literature," said Edinburgh International Book Festival director Catherine Lockerbie. Connery will appear at the festival.

'GONE WITH THE WIND' TWIN DIES

Fred Crane (90), whose Southern accent won him the opening line in "Gone With the Wind," has died. Crane played Brent Tarleton. His wife, Terry Lynn Crane, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he died of complications from diabetes. The couple had lived in Barnesville south of Atlanta, where they operated Tarleton Oaks. Crane stumbled into his role on "Wind" when he accompanied a cousin to an audition. Crane also had roles in "The Gay Amigo" and on television. Crane was married 5 times and is survived by 4 children, 8 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

SHEEN TO HAVE CHILD #4

Charlie Sheen is expecting a child with wife Brooke Mueller. "Brooke and I are thrilled!" the star of
"Two and a Half Men" wrote. "She's the best stepmom Sam, Lola and Cassandra could ever hope for. Seeing her love and affection with those 3, I know she'll be an amazing mom. Unless I bat 100%, perhaps a boy awaits us." He has 3 daughters: Cassandra Jade Estevez
(25), whose mother is Paula Profit, and 2 girls with Denise Richards. Sheen and Richards are in a custody battle over Sam (3) and Lola (2).

KATTAN FILES 4 SEPARATION ALREADY

Chris Kattan's marriage to his model wife lasted almost as long as a "Saturday Night Live" skit. The comedian filed for legal separation from Sunshine Tutt after 8 weeks of marriage. The couple married June 28. They spent a month together; files indicate they separated Aug. 10. The couple have no children together, and Kattan's filing indicates the pair have a prenuptial agreement. The couple became engaged on Christmas Eve 2006.

MCMAHON SELLS, BUT NOT 2 TRUMP

Ed McMahon agreed to a deal with a buyer for his home, said Howard Bragman. Bragman declined to name the buyer or price. But it isn't Donald Trump, who offered to buy his home and act as a landlord. "For Mr. Trump, this acquisition was not business-related, but, as he has stated, was meant to help an icon," said Michael Cohen, counsel to Trump. "If another buyer should emerge who will create the benefit Mr. Trump sought for Ed, then he is pleased." McMahon and wife, Pamela, will move when the sale is complete.

SINK OR SWIM: PHELPS 2 OPEN 'SNL'

Michael Phelps is trading the pool for the "Saturday Night Live" stage.
The record-breaking swimmer, who took home 8 gold medals at the Bejing Olympics, will host the 34th season premiere of NBC's sketch-comedy series on Sept. 13. Joining the 23-year-old athlete as musical guest will be rapper Lil Wayne. They will air 7 new "SNL" episodes before November's presidential election. The Sept. 13th premiere will mark the beginning of 4 new "SNL" shows in a row. NBC will also air 3 prime-time episodes of
"Saturday Night Live Weekend Update Thursday," a half-hour edition of the show, beginning Oct. 9.

PHILLIPS ARRESTED @ LA AIRPORT

Former teen star Mackenzie Phillips (48) has been arrested on possessing a controlled substance after she was found carrying drugs at Los Angeles International Airport. Airport police Sgt. Jim Holcomb said the co-star of "One Day At a Time" was arrested Wednesday. Phillips was heading to New York when she failed to pass a security screening and a secondary search turned up a small amount of cocaine, he said. Phillips is the daughter of John Phillips, the late leader of the Mamas and the Papas. She struggled with drug addiction in the past and was fired from "One Day At a Time," which ran from 1975 to 1984. ON GOLDEN POND (1981)

Norman & Ethel have a summer cottage on Golden Pond. Their daughter and her fiance pay them a visit and to drop off his son. She returns, married, to find her stepson has a relationship with her father.

*****
This movie classic has much to offer. There is a stellar cast lead by Katherine Hepburn and Henry Fonda. Other notables include Jane Fonda, Dabney Coleman and Doug McKeon.

The movie starts out as a well crafted love story between Norman (Henry) & Ethel (Katherine). With arrival of their estranged daughter (Jane) comes their disfunctional past. She comes for her dad's birthday, bringing her fiance (Dabney) and his son (Doug).

What she really wanted was a babysitter. They eloped, leaving his son behind. Ethel is the first to bond with the boy. But not as deeply as Norman, when he finally opens his heart.

Now married, the daughter returns to find that had become a happy family. Her father had bonded with the boy in a way she never could. With time slipping away, will she respond with anger or finally join the family?
