Howdy Adventureland Friends: I dedicate this quick issue to the late Paul Newman. This Hollywood legend found his love for auto racing while filming a movie at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway -- home of the annual Indy 500. Time is ticking and packing has commenced. I will be offline for awhile as we complete the move and unpack. My first blog post should be in a week or so. Reel 2 Reel should return in a month or so. http://groups.google.com/group/adventureland-friends This is our free members only community hosted by Google. The Paramount-DreamWorks release was the second No. 1 premiere for LaBeouf and director D.J. Caruso, who also teamed on 2007's hit "Disturbia." Opening in second place with $13.6 million was another reunion, the Warner Bros. romantic drama "Nights in Rodanthe" featuring "The Cotton Club" and "Unfaithful" co-stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane. The previous weekend's top flick, Sony's thriller "Lakeview Terrace," slipped to No. 3 with $7 million, raising its 10-day total to $25.7 million. The Samuel Goldwyn release "Fireproof," a Christian drama starring Kirk Cameron as a firefighter who turns to God to help save his marriage, premiered in fourth-place with $6.5 million. "Eagle Eye" helped pull Hollywood out of the box-office doldrums that have lingered the last two months. The top 12 movies took in $87.8 million, up 15 percent from the same weekend last year. "You put a summer-style movie in the heart of the fall, and you can take advantage of the marketplace," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. Spike Lee's World War II drama "Miracle at St. Anna" opened weakly with $3.5 million, coming in at No. 9. The Disney release features Derek Luke in a saga of four soldiers from an all-black unit stuck behind enemy lines in Italy. Two other movies - Fox Searchlight's "Choke" and Lionsgate's "The Lucky Ones" - opened in narrower release of about 400 theaters each, compared to 3,510 cinemas for "Eagle Eye." "Choke," starring Sam Rockwell and Anjelica Huston in a quirky tale of a sex addict who feigns choking in restaurants to get money for his mom's psychiatric care, opened outside the top 10 with $1.3 million. "The Lucky Ones," a road trip tale among three Iraq War veterans (Tim Robbins, Michael Pena and Rachel McAdams), bombed with just $208,000. "Eagle Eye" stars LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan as strangers hurled together in an escalating series of politically motivated adventures, their lives controlled by a mysterious female voice directing their actions through technology. "The conceit of the film is intriguing to all," said DreamWorks spokesman Chip Sullivan. "Between GPS, employee codes, bank PIN numbers, this could conceivably be within the realm of possibility within a few years." The movie secures LaBeouf's position as a steady box-office draw. His other credits include "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" and "Transformers," along with the latter's upcoming sequel. "Nights in Rodanthe" features Gere and Lane as strangers who fall for each other over a weekend at a secluded inn as a hurricane approaches. The romance made for good counterprogramming to the action-oriented "Eagle Eye," said Warner Bros. general sales manager Jeff Goldstein. Female movie-goers made up three-fourths of the audience for "Nights in Rodanthe," he said. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday. 01) "Eagle Eye" @ $29.2 million. 02) "Nights in Rodanthe" @ $13.6 million. 03) "Lakeview Terrace" @ $7 million. 04) "Fireproof" @ $6.5 million. 05) "Burn After Reading" @ $6.2 million. 06) "Igor" @ $5.5 million. 07) "Righteous Kill" @ $3.803 million. 08) "My Best Friend's Girl" @ $3.8 million. 09) "Miracle at St. Anna" @ $3.5 million. 10) "Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys" @ $3.2 million. http://www.mediabynumbers.com/ +===================================+ <> <> <> NOW SHOWING <> <> <> +===================================+ To be released on video January 2009. EUE/Screen Gems held a groundbreaking ceremony to discuss the stage and 283,000-gallon tank, which already attracts 6 availability inquiries a month. The studio will be home to a 37,500-square-foot, no-column sound stage, the 10th on the 50-acre lot. There was "insufficient evidence" to charge LaBeouf, Los Angeles County District Attorney said. "Shia is most happy that he will not have to go to court," said his attorney, Michael Norris. LaBeouf was arrested after a crash sent him to a hospital for several days. Sheriff's deputies said later LaBeouf was not at fault. The actor faces a traffic hearing that could see his driver's license suspended for 9 months, Los Angeles Sheriff's Department said. But Norris doubts the actor will lose his license. PERRY DONATES FOOD 4 ATLANTA HUNGRY Tyler Perry may be a director, playwright and actor, but he knows what it's like to be hungry. Perry, who grew up the poor son of a carpenter and was homeless for a time, donated enough food to feed 1,000 families for 2 weeks in Atlanta, where he lives. He unloading and packaged food at Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless care center. "I've been out on the street, I know what it's about," said Perry, whose projects include "Tyler Perry's the Family That Preys." Perry (39) stood side by side with volunteers and said he felt pulled to visit the center after hearing about it on the news. "I had to do something," he said. http://www.tylerperry.com/_Home/ SOFTWARE TURNS PC INTO TIVO RECORDER TiVo and Nero AG will be launch a package that turns a Windows PC into a TV recorder, just like a TiVo set-top box. The kit will cost $199 when it goes on sale Oct. 15, and includes a remote and TV tuner. The interface looks just like the one on a TiVo box. It's not the first software that allows TV recording on the PC. But it will be the first time that both the TiVo interface and functions have been replicated on a PC. Tuner-equipped PC owners can buy the TV recording software separately for $99. The Griffin Group claims it loaned the money to McMahon in 2005. The suit states that none of the loan has been repaid. McMahon's publicist didn't directly address the lawsuit, instead asking, "Anybody wanna buy a nice house in The Summit?" The quote is an allusion to McMahon's hilltop home, which is facing foreclosure. The former sidekick faces numerous lawsuits. Griffin, who created "Jeopardy" and "Wheel of Fortune," died in 2007. The lawsuit seeks repayment of the money, with interest and attorney fees. VENTURA WORKING ON TRUTV SERIES Jesse Ventura will be working on a new conspiracy-theory series for truTV. Production of a pilot featuring Ventura begins next month. The project comes from A. Smith & Co., which produces "Hell's Kitchen" and "Trading Spaces." Ventura will travel the country, investigating cases and getting input from believers and skeptics before passing judgment on a theory's validity. "Ventura will hunt down answers, plunging viewers into a world of secret meetings, midnight surveillance, shifty characters and dark forces," truTV said. Ventura, former pro wrestler and Minnesota governor, hosted a weekly talk show that lasted 2 months on MSNBC. He was also a TV commentator for the XFL, an alternative football league that folded after 1 season. Elected governor in 1998, he did not run for re-election in 2002.
