Six Steps To Baby’s First Dental Visit
Early childhood caries is rampant in many areas of the
world. For this reason, an early preventive visit to the dentist is important
for reducing the risk of dental caries in infants and children.
A child’s first dental visit should take
place no later than 12 months of age. This is the recommendation of the
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatrics,
and the American Dental Association.
There are six basic steps associated
with baby’s first dental visit.
1. A caries risk assessment of the infant.
2. Anticipatory guidance provided to the parents.
3. A knee-to-knee dental examination of the infant.
4. Healthy-diet counseling for the parents.
5. Oral hygiene and brushing instructions.
6. A fluoride varnish application.
