TGIF FRIDAY JUNE  6,2007

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:
I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something."

As my husband, the county highway commissioner, was driving to the
hospital for treatment of his painful knee injury, he decided to take
advantage of the hospital's Valet parking.

As he exited his car, a young man with the Valet parking co., comes up
and asks my husband if this was a government vehicle.

"Why, yes," my husband replied, surprised by the question.

"In fact it's an unmarked police car."

"Wow!" the young man said, sliding behind the wheel.

     "This will be the first time I've been in the front seat."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
John: My father got so angry last night at my mom, he hit the ceiling,
knocking large chunks out.
Ted: Wow!
John: Yeah... it was the first time he got plastered without even going
out.
~~~~~~~~~~~
We bought my mother a remote car starter that also opened the door locks at the press of a button. We left her car at the shop to have the system installed. That evening the technician called. He said the installation was almost complete but they had run into a little problem-they had locked the keys in the car.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The waitress at the upscale restuarant kept starring at the leading man
every time she brought him another dinner course.
"Say, she finally said, "don't I know you from somewhere?"
The leading actor was coy. "Possibly you've seen me in the movies," he
replied.
"Maybe," she said thoughtfully. "Where do you usually sit?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My son fell through the ceiling while he was working in the attic, and my four-year-old grandson, Nick, invited everyone who came to the door to see what his Dad had done. Finally my son said, "You can tell Grandma and Grandpa and relatives, but you don't need to tell everyone about it!" When the repairman arrived, Nick followed him and his dad to the hall. Nick looked up at the ceiling and said, "You know, that hole is just about the size of my dad."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The district attorney was cross-examining the murderess on the witness
stand.
"And so after you had poisoned the coffee and your husband sat at the
breakfast table partaking of the fatal dosage, didn't you feel any
qualms? Didn't you feel the slightest pity for him knowing that he was
about to die and was wholly unconscious of it? As you sat there...
didn't you feel for him at all?"
"Yes," she answered. "Come to thik of it...there was just a tiny moment
when I sort of felt sorry for him."
"And, when was that?"
"When he asked for his third cup."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I would like some vitamins for my son," the blonde mom said as she walked into the pharmacy.

"Vitamins A, B, or C?" asks the pharmacist.

"It doesn't matter, he can't read yet."

?????????????????,OOPS
I got my first job as a graduate nurse in a rural hospital and I was
eager to apply all my new knowledge and skills. One day I was sent to
check the fetal heart rate of one of our patients. I entered the room,
saw the young couple and remembered that I was to involve the patient's
family when providing care. After explaining my task, I asked the
husband if he'd like to listen to the baby's heartbeat, too. They both
seemed uncomfortable as I looked from one blushing face to the other.
"I'm not her husband!" the young man sputtered. "I'm the minister."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
SHE'S GOTTA BE BLONDE
At the car dealership where I work, we give our customers a heat deflector-a screen that covers the windshield - as a token of our appreciation for their patronage. "Here are your keys and a deflector for the windshield," our serviceman said to one client. The young lady went out to the parking lot, but ten minutes later she was back. "I'd like a smaller deflector," she said. Told there was only one size, she asked, "But how am I supposed to drive if I can't see the road?"
My friend's daughter, Nancy, found a baby tooth that her kitten had lost. She and her sister decided that they could put one over on the tooth fairy. That night they placed the tooth under Nancy's pillow. And it worked. But the tooth fairy left a can of sardines.
SOMETIMES IT'S BOTH
An elderly gentleman was reading his recovery-room record at the hospital where I work. He looked quite concerned at one notation. "I know I was in a bit of a muddle, but I didn't realize I was that bad," he said to me apologetically. "I hope I didn't offend anyone." He was greatly relieved when I explained the acronym in question meant "short of breath" and not what he thought.
Poor Johnson had spent his life making wrong decisions. If he bet on a
horse, it would lose; if he chose one elevator rather than another, it
was the one he chose that stalled between floors; the line he picked
before the bank teller's cage never moved; the lane he chose in traffic
crawled; the day he picked the picnic was the day of a cloudburst; and
so it went, day after day, year after year.
Then, once, it became necessary for Johnson to travel to some city a
thousand miles away and do it quickly. A plane was the only possible
conveyance that would get him there in time, and it turned out that only
one company supplied only one flight that would do. His heart bounded.
There was no choice to make! And if he made no choice, surely he could
come to no grief.
He took the plane.
Imagine his horror when, midway in the flight, the plane's engines
caught fire and it became obvious the plane would crash in moments.
Johnson broke into fervent prayer to his favorite saint , Saint Francis.
He pleaded, "I have never in my life made the right choice. Why this
should be, I don't know, but I have borne my cross and have not
complained. On this occasion, however, I did not make a choice; this was
the only plane I could take and I had to take it. Why, then, am I being
punished?"
He had no sooner finished when a giant hand swooped down out of the
clouds and somehow snatched him from the plane. There he was,
miraculously suspended two miles above the earth's surface, while the
plane spiraled downward far below.
A heavenly voice came down from the clouds. "My son, I can save you, if
you have in truth called upon me."
"Yes, I called on you," cried Johnson. "I called on you, Saint Francis!"
"Ah," said the heavenly voice, "Saint Francis Xavier or Saint Francis of
Assisi. Which?"
A bishop was sitting in a doctor's waiting room when a red-faced and
sobbing nun rushed out of the doctor's exam room. The bishop charges
into the exam room and demanded to know what the doctor had done.
"I told her she was pregnant." the doctor replied, matter of factly.
"That's crazy! That can't be true!" said the outraged bishop. "Why would
you ever tell her something like that?"
"Well, it cured her hiccups."
A man walks into a shoe store, and tries on a pair of shoes.
"How do they feel?" asks the sales clerk.
"Well they feel a bit tight," replies the man.
The assistant promptly bends down and has a look at the shoes and at the
man's feet.
"Try pulling the tongue out. That should help." the clerk says.
"Well, theyth sthill feelth a bith tighth."
A man absolutely hated his wife's cat and decided to get rid of him one
day by driving him 20 blocks from his home and leaving him at the park.
As he was getting home, the cat was walking up the driveway.
The next day he decided to drive the cat 40 blocks away. He put the
beast out and headed home.
Driving back up his driveway, there was the cat!
He kept taking the cat further and further and the cat would always beat
him home. At last he decided to drive a few miles away, turn right, then
left, past the bridge, then right again and another right until he
reached what he thought was a safe distance from his home and left the
cat there.
Hours later the man calls home to his wife: "Jen, is the cat there?"
"Yes", the wife answers, "why do you ask?"
Frustrated, the man answered, "Put that it on the phone, I'm lost and
need directions!"
**** ON THIS DAY ****
FINDING A FOREVER HOME
By,
Kathleene S. Baker
Early one morn' when a tiny pup,
My Mama wept out of control.
With teary eyes she cried, and said,
"Today you're being sold."
Still whimpering, she promised,
"You'll have a `great life' little boy.
Very soon you'll forget about us,
   And be someone's pride and joy."
She said, "You're off to a `forever home,'
`Cause that's what fur babies do.
That's Mother Nature's plan for pups,
You'll be loved and cared for too."
But I was only six weeks old,
Way too young to be on my own.
I needed my Mama and littermates.
I trembled, cried, and moaned.
Those new people were never home.
If they loved me, it didn't show.
Alone in a cage, I cried all day,
And the hours crept by so slow.
Within a few days we took a trip,
I was dumped where homeless dogs stay.
As I searched their eyes for answers,
They just turned and walked away.
I had been good, even though afraid,
And wondered, "what did I do wrong?"
A baby schnauzer needs lots of love,
And to feel they really belong.
Three whole weeks I bounced around,
As confused as a pup could be.
It wasn't like Mama promised at all,
A "great life" wasn't meant for me.
Every day I woke up scared,
Would I move again today?
Why couldn't anyone love me?
They just kept throwing me away.
Finally two more people arrived,
I sensed only warmth this time.
They scooped me up and kissed me,
And said, "now your life will be divine."
They took me to a wonderful home,
With another doggy and tons of toys.
They say I'm called a rescue dog,
But mainly I'm a much-loved boy.
At last my "great life" has begun,
And no more will my heart ache.
We snuggle close in bed at night,
And I get kisses when I wake.
My heart smiles in my "forever home,"
And love sparkles in my people's eyes.
I'm only touched with gentle hands,
And baby Hank never, ever cries.
Castroneves out to break string of bad luck at The Glen
By JOHN KEKIS, AP Sports Writer
July 5, 2007
WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) -- Helio Castroneves started on the pole in each of the IRL's first two races at Watkins Glen International and has little to show for it. He's ready to put an end to his bad luck on the high-speed road course.
``Every race we seem to have trouble,'' said Castroneves, who is sixth in points, 114 behind series leader Dario Franchitti's 359. ``The first year we got into a little trouble with the tires, and that cost us the race. The second race, it was about the weather. Now, hopefully the third race -- three times is the charm, as they say. We want to make that happen.''
In the inaugural Watkins Glen Indy Grand Prix two years ago, Castroneves won the pole, covering the 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course at a record 133.806 mph. He then dominated the first third of the race but began to fade as the laps went by and a crash with Tomas Enge with one lap remaining relegated him to 12th.
A year ago, the Brazilian star was awarded the pole when rain washed out qualifying, but he finished seventh when intermittent rain made the race a guessing game with what tires to use. Scott Dixon's crew figured it out, and he won for the second straight time at The Glen.
``He's the guy to beat,'' said Castroneves, who leads the series with four poles and guided his Team Penske Dallara to victory over Dixon on the street course in St. Petersburg, Fla., in April. ``He knows what it takes to win at this place.''
Last week at Richmond, Franchitti led all but eight of 250 laps to set a record for dominance in the IndyCar Series by posting his second straight victory and eighth consecutive top-five finish. He was followed across the finish line by Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Dixon and Dan Wheldon.
Dixon, second in points, comes here brimming with confidence for Sunday's race in his pursuit of Franchitti.
``It's a good thing for my side. We're very committed to the road courses,'' said Dixon, who won the IRL title four years ago. ``And if you look at the championship, the last half of the season we've got four road courses, and that's starting off with Watkins Glen. If we can get a good start here, it's definitely going to help us.''
The 2005 race was staged in late September, and Wheldon clinched the IRL championship during the event. Last year, the race was moved to early June -- after the Indy 500 -- but the rain proved decisive.
``We were good in all sorts of situations last year and sort of made it through,'' said Dixon, who held off Vitor Meira and Ryan Briscoe in a race shortened by five laps. ``It was a bit of an attrition race and probably the strangest race I've ever been in. I think, for everybody it was difficult. This year, with the changing dates, hopefully the weather is pretty nice.''
Danica Patrick, the only woman to compete here the previous two years, will be joined this time by Sarah Fisher, whose road-course experience has come mostly in karting. Milka Duno, the third woman in the series this season, announced Thursday that she would not race here because she had not been able to test.
Fisher, back racing after a year off, has never run a true road course in an IRL car. She finished 15th at St. Petersburg, three laps behind Castroneves, but was looking forward to a new challenge.
``Every race on a road course is only teaching me more about it,'' said Fisher, who has struggled in her first year with Dreyer & Reinbold Racing. ``I have a lot to learn, but it's really fun. It's the most fun I've had in an Indy car.''
Driving for Rahal Letterman, Patrick finished eighth here a year ago and was 16th in 2005, needing a bump start midway through the race after experiencing an ignition problem. This year, she is eighth in points driving for Andretti Green Racing and still searching for that elusive first IRL victory.
Despite the physical challenges Watkins Glen presents, Patrick said the key to success is pretty basic.
``It's like any other road course, you have to get a car that you've got a lot of faith in, that you have confidence in, so that you can really, really push,'' Patrick said. ``That's the situation for almost any track you go to, but even more so on a road course because you're constantly put into high-speed corners, slow-speed corners, uphill, downhill. You really have to know the limits of the car.''
Boots Randolph dies at 80
Tuesday, July 3, 2007 – Saxophone player Boots Randolph, best known for his 1963 hit "Yakety Sax" and a key architect of the Nashville Sound, died July 3 after suffering a brain hemorrhage in June. He was 80.
Randolph, born Homer Louis Randolph III on June 3, 1927 in Paducah, Ky., performed in many different musical styles, including pop music, rock music, jazz and country. Randolph's break came when Homer and Jethro saw him play in a Decatur, Ill. club. The duo told Chet Atkins about Randolph. A few days later, Owen Bradley hired Randolph for a Brenda Lee session.
Randolph released singles while at RCA, but never had success there and left for Monument in 1961. Two years later, "Yakety Sax," based on The Coasters' classic "Yakety Yak" became a hit.
He played on several albums with Elvis Presley and also performed on soundtracks for Presley's movies.
In addition to releasing his own CDs, Randolph was known for his session work, including helping develop the Nashville Sound, a more pop-based style often with strings. Among the songs he played on was Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman," "Turn On Your Lovelight" by Jerry Lee Lewis and "Rockin' 'Round The Christmas Tree" by Lee.
Montgomery Gentry, Brad Paisley top charts for second straight week
Thursday, July 5, 2007 – For the second straight week, Montgomery Gentry topped the Billboard country song chart with "Lucky Man." The same happened on the album chart with Brad Paisley's "Fifth Gear" first for the week ending July 5, 2007
George Strait stayed second on the song chart with "Wrapped," while Big & Rich remained third with "Lost In This Moment." Keith Urban moved up three spots to fourth with "I Told You So," while Kenny Chesney jumped four spots to fifth with "Never Wanted Nothing More," the first single from his upcoming CD.
A big mover was Taylor Swift whose second single, "Teardrops on My Guitar" jumped from 12th to 8th. The biggest mover was Tim McGraw's "If You're Reading This," up 6 to 19th.
On the album chart, Toby Keith remained second with "Big Dog Daddy," while Swift stayed third. Carrie Underwood was up one to fourth with "Some Hearts," switching spots with Big & Rich's "Between Raising Hell And Amazing Grace."
The 6th through 11th spots remained exactly the same. The biggest mover by far was Faith Hill's "Fireflies," up 44 spots to 12th.
On the overall top 200, Paisley was 5th. Paisley was 13th, Swift 19th, Underwood 22nd and Big & Rich 27th.
Although at least at first considered country flavored by the label, Bon Jovi's "Lost Highway" dropped from first to third on the overall top 200 chart and is not on the country album chart. Ryan Adams' "Easy Tiger" debuted in 7th and is not on the country chart.
**** TODAY'S USELESS FACT ****
What makes things glow in the dark?
Glow sticks, star stickers, heavy metal posters, and all other glow-in-the-dark novelties are powered by phosphors, chemical compounds that emit visible light after being radiated. Phosphorescent materials continue to glow after their energy source (light) is gone, while fluorescent materials will dim immediately.
The electrons in phosphors, like children and politicians, are easily excited. When charged with light, they quickly ascend to a higher electron orbit, giving off light energy in the process. Glow-in-the-dark light emanates from electrons that are in an intermediate but still excitable condition, kind of like the way you feel after you've just finished the hundred-yard dash.
Most glow-in-the-dark toys contain either zinc sulfide or strontium aluminate, because these substances have relatively long phosphor persistence (i.e., they glow longer). Some pricey watches contain glow-in-the-dark elements that don't need charging, because they contain mildly radioactive materials.
Guess what? You're staring at a group of densely clustered, electrically charged phosphors right now. TV sets and computer monitors use thousands of tiny phosphor elements to emit varying shades of red, green, and blue
.
LAST CALL Y'ALL
A retired man who volunteers to entertain patients in nursing homes and
hospitals went to a local hospital one day and took his portable
keyboard along. He told some jokes and sang some funny songs at
patients' bedsides.
When he finished at each patient's bedside, he would say, in farewell,
"I hope you get better."
One elderly gentleman replied,
         "Oh, geezaloo... I can only hope you get better, too."
