FRIDAY JUNE? 17,2005
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: If teens always complain about having nothing to do during summer
vacation, how come they have to stay out so late to get it
done?
A volunteer firefighter was grocery shopping when his pager went
off. He ran out, leaving his cart in an aisle. When he returned he found the
cart full with his list on top and a note reading: "I finished your shopping for
you. Thanks for helping the
community." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My father has
always despised anyone who tries to sell him something at the door. So in his
brilliance he posted a sign that read, "I shoot every third salesman, the second
one just left." In five years only one salesman knocked on the door. He
commented on the sign being a good joke. "It's not," repied my father. The man
turned around and left immediately. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Most of us have
enough money to pay our taxes. What we need is something to live
on ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The new father ran out of the delivery room and
announced to the rest of his family who were waiting for the news: "We had
twins!" We're naming them Maureen and Colleen!
The family was so excited
they immediately asked, "Who do Maureen and Colleen look like?"
The
father paused, smiled, and said, "Each
other." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Failing to get a response from a letter
to a store's president, a consumer wrote a second letter which began: "Dear
Computer: I realize that you are now running things and the president is only a
figurehead." The copy he sent the president got his problem
solved. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Two blondes
were driving along a road by a wheat fieldwhen they saw a blonde in the middle
of the fieldrowing a row boat.
The driver blonde turned to her friend and
said, "You know - it's blondes like that that give us a bad name!"
To
this, the other blonde replies "I know it, and if I knew how to swim, I'd go out
there and drown her." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The cell

On a balmy day in the South Pacific, a
navy ship spied smoke coming from one of three huts on an island they
thought was deserted.? Upon arriving at the shore they were met by a
"survivor."
He said, "I'm so glad you're here!? I've been alone on
this island for more than five years!"
The captain of the ship
replied, "But we saw THREE huts."
The survivor said, "Oh, Well.? I
live in one, and go to church in another."
"What about the THIRD
hut?" asked the captain.
"That's where I USED to go to school,but I
graduated." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FAMOUS LAST

"How old

"Six weeks," Brittney answered, "but how did you know
I have a baby?"
"Well," the woman said smiling, "I've been watching
you rock your grocery cart." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did you know there's a baby boom in Florida right now?? They
say it's because of the three hurricanes to hit Florida nine months ago
that left people with no electricity.
I don't know. Do you think that's
the reason?? If not having electricity is the reason people are having

made a nice living running her mobile concession truck. She would find out where
the local movie company was shooting on location and park her truck, which she
called simply ???The Box???, near-by.
Technicians and actors alike would stop
by for some pastry and coffee during breaks from shooting. This was the day that
the director was shooting the most important scene in the movie. In this scene
the lovers walking along a deserted beach decide to break off their relationship
and return to their respective spouses to live the rest of their lives with only
the memory of their short interlude to comfort them in the years
ahead.
He had shot the scene several times in order to insure that he had
obtained the most dramatic effect. That evening, on reviewing the daily takes,
he was shocked to find every take was spoiled. As the stars were talking, the
camera swept around the surrounding loneliness of the empty beach. But in every
take, there was the concession truck with several people enjoying its
wares.
He immediately called his cinematographer and shouted angerly, ???I

Ads confuse kids on healthy foods? ?
CHAMPAIGN, Ill., -- A University of Illinois study finds? ?
TV commercials about food are confusing children about? ? what
is healthy and what is not. The study found the more? ? television
a child watches, the more confused they are? ? about what foods
will make them strong and healthy. Speech? ? Professor Kristen
Harrison, the author of the study, said? ? the commercials also
robbed children of their ability to? ? provide the reasons behind
their food choices. Harrison? ? found children equate labels like
"diet" with "fat-free"? ? with nutritious. "When they were
presented with choices? ? like Diet Coke vs. orange juice and
fat-free ice cream vs.? ? cottage cheese, they were more likely to
pick the wrong? ? answer -- the diet and fat-free foods -- than
when they? ? were presented with choices without these labels,
for? ? example, spinach vs. lettuce," Harrison said. "The
labels? ? 'diet' and 'fat-free' suggest that these foods are
good? ? for them and make it harder for them to pick the
'right'? ? answer," Harrison said, noting that the goal of the
study? ? was "to gauge children's understanding of which
food? ? would help them grow, not make them
slimmer." ~~~ Drug reduces risk of Type 2 diabetes? ?
SAN
DIEGO, -- A California study finds using a drug to re-? ? duce
insulin resistance in women who became diabetic while? ? pregnant
reduces their risk of Type 2 diabetes. Research-? ? ers at the Keck
School of Medicine at the University of? ? Southern California used
pioglitazone, a relative of? ? another drug that had been effective
but caused liver? ? problems. They provided the drug for three
years to 89? ? women who had gestational diabetes. Pioglitazone
appeared? ? to reduce the incidence of Type 2 diabetes, the
researchers? ? said at the American Diabetes Association's 65th
scientific? ? sessions. The functioning of the beta cells, which
produce? ? insulin, also remained unchanged among those women who
did? ? not develop diabetes. Most women with gestational
diabetes? ? do not remain diabetic immediately after they deliver
their? ? babies. But their insulin resistance remains high, and
they? ? have a high risk of Type 2 diabetes. Pioglitazone
functions? ? by making cells more receptive to insulin, said Dr.
Thomas? ? Buchanan, a Keck professor who presented the
study.? ? ~~~
? Race-based heart drug to be
reviewed? ?
WASHINGTON, -- A U.S. drug panel will review a
heart drug? ? that was rejected eight years ago for the general
public? ? but which is now being promoted for African-Americans.
The? ? heart failure treatment drug called BiDil was rejected
by? ? the Food and Drug Administration because its
supporting? ? studies were found to be inconclusive, The New York
Times? ? reported Monday. But now a study of 1,050
African-American? ? heart failure patients showed BiDil
significantly reduced? ? death and hospitalization, the Times
reported. BiDil is? ? seen as increasing the levels of nitric
oxide, which? ? widens blood vessels. Previous studies have
suggested? ? African-Americans have deficiencies of nitric oxide,
a? ? compound that occurs naturally in the human body,
the? ? report said. The drug's maker, NitroMed Inc., says
its? ? decision to market BiDil for African-Americans is
based? ? on solid science. But other scientists think that race
is? ? too broad and ill-defined a category to be relevant
in? ? determining a drug's approval, the Times
said. ~~~ Fifth possible brain infection case cited? ?
WASHINGTON, -- The U.S. government reportedly has received? ?
the fifth possible case of a rare brain infection linked? ? to
the multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri. Quoting government? ? records,
the Wall Street Journal says the latest case of? ? the infection,
which can be fatal, was reported May 16? ? through the Food and
Drug Administration's Adverse Event? ? Reporting System. "We are
aware of the report and it will? ? be updated by the company if
there is any relevant informa-? ? tion," an FDA spokeswoman told
the Journal. "These reports? ? don't represent confirmed cases."
The drug's makers, Biogen? ? Idec Inc. and Elan Corp., have
reported three confirmed? ? cases of the infection in patients
taking Tysabri. Two of? ? the patients died, while the third has
recently shown signs? ? of improvement. The companies pulled the
drug from the? ? market in February, the Journal said. The
companies say? ? diagnosis on a possible fourth case, reported,
earlier? ? this month has not been confirmed. The latest
possible? ? case concerns a female
patient.? ? ? ~~~ Bills unlikely to mean
fewer abortions? ?
CHICAGO, -- Several U.S. states have passed
measures regard-? ? ing abortion rights but activists said the
bills are unlike-? ? ly to drastically reduce the number of
abortions. David? ? Garrow, a legal historian at the Emory Law
School told the? ? Christian Science Monitor many of the measures
represent? ? efforts by anti-abortion state legislators to keep the
base? ? happy. "The appearance of activity appears to satisfy
people? ? even if, when you look at it carefully, there's no
tangible? ? impact," he said. This year, for instance, Florida has
taken? ? additional oversights on some clinics, Texas demands
written? ? parental consent for a minor before an abortion and
Georgia? ? has a bill that orders a woman be told the likelihood
a? ? fetus would feel pain during an abortion. David Bereit,
with? ? the anti-abortion rights group American Life League,
told? ? the Monitor: "Even in cases where it may be more symbolic
or? ? less effectual in saving lives on unborn children we have
to? ? recognize it has an effect in public relations and
helping? ? people think these things
through." ~~~ ? Women open to preventive breast removal? ?
LONDON, -- A poll of 1,500 women in Britain and five other? ?
countries finds that 22 percent would consider having both? ?
breasts removed if they were at high risk for cancer. The? ?
Times of London reports that the figure was even higher? ? in
Britain, with 31 percent of those asked saying they? ? would choose
a double mastectomy. NOP World conducted the? ? survey in
Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Britain, Germany and? ? Italy for
Cancer Research UK. About 80 percent of the? ? 41,000 women
diagnosed with breast cancer every year in? ? Britain are
post-menopausal. Cancer Research UK is setting? ? up a trial to
determine if women who are both postmeno-? ? pausal and at high
risk of breast cancer can reduce their? ? risk by taking
anastrozole, a drug already used for treat-? ? ment. "The IBIS-II
study is extremely important for women? ? with an increased risk of
developing breast cancer," said? ? Jack Cuzick, the lead
researcher. "It is vitally important? ? that women come forward to
participate. It could provide? ? them with a valuable option in
helping to control breast? ? cancer."? ? ~~~ Soy
can lower cholesterol? ?
LEXINGTON, Ky.,? -- University of
Kentucky physician James? ? Anderson has found that soy beans can
help lower cholesterol? ? and blood sugar. Writing in the June
issue of the Journal of? ? the American College of Nutrition,
Anderson, also a noted? ? nutritionist, says most people in the
United States only? ? have vague idea that soy is a healthy food.
Anderson tested? ? two commercially available meal replacements --
one soy-? ? based, and the other milk-based -- among obese adults
for? ? 12 weeks. Both groups lost weight but the soy-based
group? ? lost slightly more weight in any given week, and
displayed? ? lower serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels.
Soy? ? intake also produced small but significant reductions
in? ? serum glucose values. "The bottom line is soy is
healthy,? ? and while incorporating it into weight loss may not
have a? ? more dramatic effect on your waistline than other
nutrition? ? plans, its benefits go beyond weight loss toward
increasing? ? overall health," Anderson said. In an accompanying
article,? ? Anderson raised the possibility that poor snack choices
may? ? play an active role in increasing rates of childhood
obesity.? ? He said snacking can be healthful when the foods are
high? ? in nutritional value and low in
calories.? ? ~~~ Exercise prevents mobility problems? ?
MAIDEN, Mass., -- A study indicates older people who do not? ?
exercise face a greater risk of future problems walking and? ?
climbing stairs. The Health, Aging and Body Composition? ?
Study followed 3,075 people ages 70 to 79 during a seven-? ?
year period to assess changes in body composition. Research-? ?
ers discovered that mobility loss in older people who do not? ?
exercise can be reduced by having an active lifestyle,? ?
reports the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.? ?
"Together with earlier evidence that physical activity in? ?
old age is beneficial for physical, cognitive and psycho-? ?
logical health, the results show the importance of an? ? active
lifestyle in old age," lead author Marjolein Visser? ? said.
"Healthcare providers should be aware of these bene-? ? ficial
effects of physical activity and communicate this? ? to their
patients." None of the study's participants? ? reported problems
walking a quarter-mile or climbing 10? ? steps at the beginning of
the study but after 4 1/2 years,? ? 35 percent of the men and 47
percent of the women developed? ? problems. The study showed those
who were inactive had the? ? greatest risk of developing mobility
problems. ~~~ ? ? ? Breast cancer lures stem cells to

AUGUSTA, Ga., -- Breast cancer lures stem cells it
needs to? ? survive by secreting growth factors that usually help
the? ? body heal, Medical College of Georgia researchers said.
Re-? ? searchers at the Augusta, Ga., college said they

**** Nemechek puts Army back on track? ?
By Dave Rodman, NASCAR.COM? ?
LONG POND, Pa. -- Only two
weeks after one of the biggest? ? disappointments in his racing
career, Joe Nemechek scored? ? his best finish of the season Sunday
at Pocono Raceway.? ?
On a muggy summer day in which all the
pre-race pageantry? ? revolved around the ongoing celebration of
the 230th? ? birthday of the U.S. Army -- Nemechek's sponsor --
the? ? Florida native came home third in the Pocono
500.? ?
The finish was the best for Nemechek's No. 01
Chevrolet? ? since he was fourth last October at Atlanta Motor
Speedway,? ? but even more important, it finally fulfilled some of
the? ? enormous potential his MB2 Motorsports team had shown
since? ? they won last fall at Kansas Speedway.? ?
"The goal today was to win one for all of our soldiers, but? ?
finishing third after the way we started was a pretty good? ?
day's work," Nemechek said. "We let some wins get away from? ?
us earlier (this season), but today's finish showed the? ?
character and potential of this U.S. Army team."? ?
On
Memorial Day weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway, Nemechek? ? lost
what seemed to be a sure victory in the Coca-Cola 600? ? when a
flat tire with less than 10 laps to go pitched him? ? out of the
lead and into the wall.? ?
Nemechek, driving a car Sunday that
was a graphic? ? representation of the Army's latest camouflage
combat? ? uniform, fell back from his 18th starting position and
was? ? 31st when the first caution flew at lap 29.? ?
"We just didn't have the right setup in the beginning --? ?
the car was real tight," Nemechek said. "But at every pit? ?
stop we kept on making adjustments and when it started to? ?
click the Army Chevy was fast."? ?
Nemechek had high praise
for his chief mechanic, Ryan? ? Pemberton. It was Pemberton who
started a turnaround for? ? the team that resulted in the victory
at Kansas and an? ? impressive point total in the season-ending
Chase for the? ? Nextel Cup.? ?
"Ryan made great
calls and the pit stops by the Army of One? ? crew were
exceptional," Nemechek said. "We passed a lot of? ? cars today
because of the great pit stops -- a soldier-type? ? effort by
all."? ?
Nemechek was into the top 10 by lap 107, and used a
tire? ? strategy that helped his car, and helped him avoid
tire? ? troubles that bit a number of competitors.? ?
"We took four tires every stop," Nemechek said of the race's? ?
second half. "I knew when they made an adjustment what it? ?
would do. I had them free the car up just a little bit and? ?
we got too loose -- but we made a gain on it.? ?
"Every
time they'd get the car better, I was able to pass? ? guys right
and left, high or low -- whatever it was. You've? ? got to have a
good handling racecar. They kept making it? ? better and
better.? ?
"Maybe if we could have gotten to the front earlier
to run? ? with these guys, maybe we could have run with
them."? ?
Nemechek executed a near-perfect restart on the
attempted? ? green-white-checker finish to move from fifth into
third.? ?
"I was very fortunate on the restart," Nemechek said.
"I got? ? past Mark Martin and Kyle Busch. I just got through Turn
1? ? on the restart really good and so did Kyle.? ?
"We got up beside Mark going in the Tunnel Turn and once he? ?
got past Mark, Kyle actually got loose and he slid way up? ?
out of the groove. Once he slid up out of the groove, my? ? car
was on track and hammer down and got past him.? ?
"That's
incredible -- our first top five. The way we have? ? run this year
we should have had a lot more. Hopefully the? ? demons are gone and
this is the kick start we needed to go? ? on a successful
streak."? ?
Nemechek's recent Pocono history virtually
epitomizes his? ? 2005 season. A year ago, Nemechek ran in the
top-five late? ? in both races, but suffered transmission woes in
each and? ? had finishes that didn't represent his car's
potential.? ?
In fact, Nemechek's result broke a string of six
consecutive? ? Pocono finishes worse than 23rd, and was only his
fourth? ? top-10 in his 22 races on the 2.5-mile triangular
oval.? ?
It was only his third top-10 finish in 14 races this
season.? ?
Nemechek hopes it leads to better results, starting
with? ? this weekend's Batman Begins 400 at Michigan
International? ? Speedway. He was particularly enthused by the fact
that five? ? Hendrick engine department powerplants were in the top
10.? ?
"That makes me feel really good," Nemechek said.
"The? ? engines were great today and we were bogging those
things? ? down to 5800 RPMs in the corner -- they were down
pretty? ? low.? ?
"It was incredible that they
pulled up off (the corners) as? ? good as they did. My engine ran
as good as anybody else's? ? out there. Brian (Vickers), Kyle and
everybody ran good? ? today so we're looking forward to
Michigan." ~~~ Tire incident spoils Riggs' run at Pocono? ?
Team Press Release? ?
The 2.5-mile triangular oval of
Pocono Raceway took its toll? ? on tires during Sunday's Pocono 500
and one of the victims? ? was Valvoline driver Scott
Riggs.? ?
Riggs, who started the 200-lap race fifth, saw his
day? ? spoiled when his left-front tire blew on Lap 115 of
200.? ? The blown tire ripped off the fender of the No. 10
Chevrolet? ? and broke an oil line.? ?
Riggs
attempted to drive the crippled machine to the pits,? ? but his car
stalled on pit road entrance, forcing the? ? Valvoline crew to push
the car to the garage.? ?
The crew did manage to make the
necessary repairs, but it? ? wasn't until Lap 151 that Riggs
returned to the track. The? ? end result was a 37th-place finish
for Riggs.? ?
"There were a lot of flat tires today -- I'm not
sure why --? ? but it was unfortunate for us because we were just
starting? ? to feel good about the Valvoline Chevy," said
Riggs.? ?
Riggs ran in the top 10 in the early going of the
500-mile? ? race, but then fell back after a couple of adjustments
to? ? his car didn't work out as planned.? ?
"We
went the wrong way on adjustments after the first pit? ? stop and
struggled for awhile," explained Riggs. "But then? ? we got it
figured out and started to gain in track position.? ? There was
plenty of time left in the race to get a? ? respectable finish. But
when the tire went down and knocked? ? the oil line off we were
done."? ?
When Riggs incurred the flat tire, he was running in
the mid? ? teens.? ?
"I really felt like we were
going to make a turnaround in? ? the final 80 laps and come away
with a decent finish," said? ? Riggs. "But the weekend overall --
with our new crew chief? ? (Rodney Childers) -- laid a strong
foundation for this? ? Valvoline team. We were really fast in the
two practice? ? sessions and had a great qualifying effort. The
tire? ? incident bit us big time, but there's always next week
and? ? I know this team is going to jell and get on a
streak."? ?
The next NASCAR Nextel Cup event for Riggs and the
Valvoline? ? team will be Sunday (June 19) at Michigan
International? ? Speedway.? ? ? ~~~ Terry
Labonte to drive No. 11 Chevy at Infineon? ? From Team Press
Release? ?
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- Joe Gibbs Racing has hired
two-time? ? NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion Terry Labonte to
pilot? ? the No. 11 Chevrolet during the Nextel Cup Series
race? ? weekend at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. He
replaces? ? Jason Leffler, the No. 11 team's regular driver, for
this? ? one event.? ?
"Jason understands that our
support of him continues, as? ? he'll race this weekend at Michigan
and return to the No. 11? ? at Daytona," said J.D. Gibbs, president
of Joe Gibbs Racing.? ?
"A number of factors led to this
decision. Where the No. 11? ? is in points, the typically high car
count at Sonoma, the? ? number of road course specialists other
teams tend to? ? enlist, the unique nature of road course racing -
none? ? favors a team outside the top-35 in points.? ?
"With an experienced veteran in Terry, the No. 11 will? ?
benefit from his 25 years of Nextel Cup racing and his? ?
strong performances at road course venues."? ?
In addition
to his championship-caliber talents, Labonte? ? also brings road
course success to the No. 11 team. Of his? ? 22 career wins, two
have come at a road course -- the? ? defunct Riverside Speedway in
1984 and 1985. And in his 54? ? career starts at road courses,
Labonte has earned eight? ? poles, 17 top-fives and 26 top-10s
while leading a total of? ? 411 laps.? ?
"I've
always enjoyed road course racing, and while no road? ? courses
were planned for this year, it's hard to say no when? ? you have
the opportunity to drive for an organization that's? ? just as
professional as Hendrick Motorsports," said Labonte,? ? who is
running a limited Nextel Cup schedule for Hendrick? ?
Motorsports.? ?
"We want to thank Hendrick Motorsports for
allowing Terry to? ? assist us with the No. 11 team at Sonoma,"
said Gibbs. "Rick? ? Hendrick and Hendrick Motorsports helped get
Joe Gibbs? ? Racing up and running when we formed this team back in
1991,? ? and 14 years later, we're once again appreciative of
their? ? help."? ?
Terry Labonte's addition to Joe
Gibbs Racing for the Sonoma? ? race is a natural, as Terry's
younger brother, Bobby, is a? ? 10-year veteran of Joe Gibbs
Racing, having piloted the? ? No. 18 Interstate Batteries Chevrolet
since 1995.? ?
The Labonte brothers are the only brothers in
NASCAR history? ? to win Cup Series championships. Terry won the
title in 1984? ? and 1996, while Bobby won in
2000.? ? ?

Who is the
largest individual land owner in the U.S.?
? Mr. Ted Turner individually
owns the most land in the United States.
Turner's holdings are comprise
roughly 1,800,000 acres spread across half a dozen states. Compared to some of
his other investments, Turner's real estate portfolio has performed admirably.
Its net worth is approximately $750 million.
Collectively, the country's
10 largest landowners own 10.6 million acres. However impressive, that figures
pale in comparison with federal ownership. According to the journalism research
group FacsNet, the federal government owns 624 million acres, or 27 percent of
the country's land.
It's worth noting that much of the federal land,
especially in Nevada and the western states, isn't good for much. The CIA World
Fact Book estimates that only 20 percent of American land is arable. But, hey,
twenty percent of 2.3 billion acres isn't too shabby
