NIXA (Images of America: Series)
Michelle Korgis-Fitzpatrick
128 pp, Nonfiction Pictorial History
Trade Paperback
ISBN: 0738533270
Arcadia Publishing
  $21.95 (shipping included)
Blurb ??“ Nixa was officially incorporated as a village on June 10, 1902. This book looks at the people and history of Nixa and the surrounding rural Christian County communities, including the rural area around Bull Creek. The area was originally known as "Faughts," for James Jasper Faughts, who had operated a trading post at the old "Crossroads" site in 1879. Nicholas Alexander Inman, from Tennessee in 1852, opened a blacksmith shop with Joe Weaver. As the population grew, settlers and businesses arose in the area of the Crossroads site. A town meeting was called to order and it was suggested the town be named "Nixa," after Nicholas Inman. And so the rural community of Nixa was born.

OZARK (Images of America: Series)

Michelle Korgis-Fitzpatrick
128 pp, Nonfiction Pictorial History
Trade Paperback
ISBN: 0738533118
Arcadia Publishing
  $21.95 (shipping included)
Blurb ??“ The name Ozark comes from the French Aux Arcs. The town of Ozark may have gotten its name because it is at the bend of the creek. Today the term Ozark refers to the large upland region that covers parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Ozark, Missouri is nestled in the hills of this region and serves as the county seat of Christian County. This book looks at Ozark's 150-year history, using vintage photographs from the Pegram Collection to capture the spirit of the town and surrounding areas. Ozark has long prided itself on its hospitality, and that is evident here in the images of people, events, schools, railroads, and more that have made Ozark the warm and friendly town it is today.

Blurb - Swinging Bridges is a story of a young man's coming of age.  An 18th birthday celebration alters the course of a young man's life forever when his partying sets in motion a dramatic chain of events, leading to his arrest on three separate charges in three different counties in less than twenty-four hours. For Steve Jones, growing up in rural Hawkthorn, Iowa, population 200, meant the freedom to explore and discover the world around him, with virtually no adult intervention.  Steve and his buddies grew up playing more than their share of juvenile pranks, fully believing themselves to be invincible, and had become notorious for their antics.
But on his 18th birthday, the antics went terribly awry.  What began as a night of carefree underage drinking turned into a parking lot brawl; only the tip of the iceberg for Steve.  When Jackson Wright met Steve, he was in the custody for the attempted murder of his brother, and thus began the biggest case of Jackson's career.

Profound and eye-opening, Neck Deep opens the door to a side of emergency medical care rarely seen, and leaves the reader with an inescapable realization: This could happen to me. Payment Accepted - $13.95
Blurb - Growing up in Mississippi is a vivid and descriptive biography that grips at the very core of every human emotion as memoirs of growing up in somewhat painfully poor social conditions in Mississippi do not deter the family, but bond them together with the unified strength and triumph most prevalent in top movies like Soul Food, or even to overcome travesties as in The Color Purple.  You will be intrigued by the strong development of characters like the wayward Uncle Wigley, a cursed character among many black families who resorts to inflicting abuse on family members.  The readers feel as if they are in the story and watching without speaking.  This is a modern day tale with a happy ending.  The Civil Rights Movement.

ILLUSTRATORS ARE STORYTELLERS, TOO
?© Copyright by Kevin Scott Collier

Illustrating another author??™s manuscript is an adventure. I was an artist on a dozen or more children??™s print and e-books published in 2005 written by others. As an author myself, illustrating my own stories is one thing, but drawing for another is challenging.

When I am under contract as illustrator, a publisher sends me the writer??™s manuscript. The manuscript is always in front of me when I am at the drawing board as a guide. It??™s not simply a story; it??™s an environment that must be brought to life.

Many decisions have to be made when drawing a children??™s book, and the first is to catalog the lead characters of the story and render a series of sketches on what these principals could look like. Some authors provide detailed descriptions, whereas others simply identify the individual??™s age or the type of creature with no specifics. A book could feature a rabbit, and reveal nothing of what it should look like.

The majority of the writers I have worked with depend on me to develop an appearance for their characters. As an illustrator, I read a story over a few times to get a feel for the characters and experiment creating preliminary sketches. Once a good likeness surfaces, I usually email the sketches to the author seeking their approval. Once the author signs off on this phase, I begin illustrating their story.

One thing I have learned is to carefully read the page of text that accompanies any illustration. I recently started a page depicting an owl, bunny, robin and beaver only to reread one sentence that said ???at night.??? I almost had missed it. Apparently the sun dropped quickly within a paragraph and when the bunny arrived back at his home to greet his pals, it had gone dark.

Sometimes an artist gets to add things in illustrations that the writer never imagined. If the author approves of it, it??™s a bonus. In the ???Topsy Turvy Land??? picture book I illustrated, an orange whale out in the ocean was part of a background. It??™s never mentioned in the book, but became part of the Topsy Turvy ensemble. In a book titled ???Mice in My Tummy??? (about anxiety in kids) no mice were to appear, but I created a mouse that pops in a little girl??™s imagination. In another book I put eyes and a smile (with the author??™s approval) on a little red wagon a boy owned. It gave the wagon (named Speedy) a personality. I put a purple derby on a crow for yet another book, and the author approved. Nowhere in the story does it mention Hector crow has a hat.

The best children??™s illustrated books are a combination of the imagination of the writer and the imagination of the artist. The writer creates the story, and the artist doesn??™t just interpret it, but embellishes it with pictures. When the author lets an artist have creative input this allows for unique things to be created. That??™s when it becomes magic.

Illustrators of children??™s books can do more than just turn a script into colorful pictures. They also help tell a story.

Kevin Scott Collier is a young reader fiction author and illustrator with over 20 titles released by various publishing companies. He also is Art Director for a daily Michigan newspaper, and teaches youth fiction writing and comic??™s illustration classes.

A Father??™s Heart
?© Copyright 2001by Michelle Korgis-Fitzpatrick
storywriter1976@aol.com

Many years have came and gone between us.

Years of laughter and of joy, yet there were those years of sorrow and sadness that we have shared.

And to this day, I still cherish the memories we have shared.

You have taught me right from wrong, to do as you say, and not as you do, only for my protection and dignity. For that, I have found your love to be true.

When my day came to share my love as a mother to my son, you still stood near; you did not dare to leave.

Now, I have married, you have moved on, leaving my husband his chance to be a father to your grandson.

Which I truly see, deep inside your heart, you only hope for my husband to be a better father to my son than what you have been to me.

And for this, I would like to say,

???Thank you and I love you!???

You are the beat of my heart,
You are the blood in my veins,
You are the life of my body,
You are the spirit in my soul,
You have given me hope,
When I thought I could not cope.

In a time when I felt I was at the end of my rope.
I am in love with you, and only you.
You are truly the love of my life.

Your smile starts my heart to sing,
How I can hear the bells start to ring.

For when I??™m with you, I feel nothing is amiss,
Because, of your loving kiss.

I stare at your face and I get lost in your beauty,
My love for you will never become a duty.

To have you at my side, through our lives joyful ride,
Fills my heart with passion and pride.

Don??™t ever forget my love for you??¦without your love; I??™d have no clue.

Apple-pie

kathalok@yahoo.co.uk

The tree of wisdom was in the middle of the garden. It was called the apple of the Paradise. It was very beautiful and attractive. Its flowers were brilliant and multicolored. The fruits were cardinal red in color and most alluring. Were they healthy or poisonous? Eve did not know. Her seat of knowledge was hollow and empty. But she was the mother of curiosity and intuition. She had the urge to know the truth. Why did God tell them no to eat its fruits? Why did He forbid them even from glancing at it? Why did He command them not to touch it? Wasn??™t it god??™s creation? Eve was confused and discontented. Seeing her predicament the Serpent invited her and said: ???My dear pretty woman, come closer, have a nice look at the tree and enjoy the sight of the fruits???

She went closer and looked at the fruits. The fruits were so inviting that she touched and fondled them. Touch and fondling electrified her. She then plucked them and ate. The fruits were juicy and delicious. They were so sweet and kicking that she went crazy and bit Adam. The Adam suddenly became crazy about eating the fruits. He too ate lavishly. He too became delirious and bit Eve. She returned the bites

Enjoying the humans turning mad about biting each other the Serpent laughed at them. It was his last laugh. Adam and Eve bit the snake and killed it. And in their madness they began to bite each other and kill. All these happened because of the golden apple tree. People on earth continue biting, beating and killing each other till today for the earth??™s apple ??“pie.

RETURN OF THE WOOLY MAMMOTH
Copyright ?©2005 by Robert P. Herbst

In an effort to keep Mount Perry, Florida, historically accurate, Dr. Gene Splicer, eminent doctor of genetics at the world famous Mount Perry Institute Of Genetic Science, has taken on the task of reintroducing the long extinct Wooly Mammoth to the swamps around Mount Perry.

This is by no means a task to be taken lightly as to date there are no samples of the tissue if the Florida Wooly Mammoth, as there are in Siberia, for our learned doctor splicer to look at. All we have here in Florida are bones.

Where the color and length of the mammoth??™s hair are concerned, Dr. Splicer is on his own. To this end, Dr. Splicer has examined the local animal populations of Florida in search of an animal with hair, which seems comfortable in the Florida heat and humidity. Many animals having the desired characteristics have been considered.

In the end, the common house cat was chosen for it??™s hair and the multi color of it, to be precise, the Persian Long Haired Classic House Cat. The question now became, how to cross the house cat with an African Elephant? Getting a female house cat to stand still for a cross mating with an elephant was a miserable failure. A male house cat trying to mate with a female elephant was also doomed to failure.

The entire scientific community at the institute was called on for ideas on how to combine the two species. The scientists retired to a special "Think Tank", where no one would bother them as they plotted a way to cross the two species. One day as Yodar Hoopelhoffer, the Mount Perry town idiot, was cleaning up the empty coffee cups, happened to ask, "why don??™t you just get some sperm from a male elephant and artificially inseminate the cat?"

Astounded and impressed by Yodar??™s idea, a male elephant was quickly found and after several hours of squabbling, a volunteer was selected to collect the sperm from the male elephant. The elephant wasn??™t too sure it wanted to go along with this idea. As the volunteer pool shrank, Yodar finally stepped forward with a cup and said he??™d gotten the sperm for them. The surviving scientists were very impressed.

A suitable female cat was found and inseminated. It was a terribly unfortunate situation as the poor cat tried to carry and give birth to six wooly mammoth/cat hybrids. After this first dismal failure it was decided to get some cat sperm from a local show cat breeder and inseminate a female elephant. This situation was found to work much better and the wooly mammoth gave birth to six wooly mammoth, ??” kittens?

Naturally, Dr. Gene Splicer was called on to alter the DNA to the point where the two creatures could be mixed along with a few other ideas Dr. Splicer wanted to try. There were some monkey and sheep genes mixed in to give the creatures a harvest able fur coat, provided shearers can be found.

As the creatures grew they took on the characteristics of each of the animals. The resulting critter had a lone prehensile trunk like an elephant, extending out from a mouth sporting fangs like a Smiled on. The face resembled an elephant except for the hair, eyes and hair. The eyes were indeed cat??™s eyes and the creature seemed to prefer to prowl at night.

The hair was indeed long and quite colorful over the entire creature except the trunk. The tail was long like a cat??™s tale, but also prehensile. The fur did indeed grow long and curly like a sheep??™s wool. But finding someone to harvest it has proved difficult.

The new creature was able to swing through the trees like a monkey and snatch it??™s food up from the forest floor, much to the surprise of the local alligator and snake population. Once having captured its prey, the creature would hang by its tail and gobble up the luckless creature holding it with its trunk and frontal cat??™s claws.
Having cat??™s claws on all four feet enabled the creature to climb trees quickly. Attempts at containment of the new creature was ineffective and the new mother had to chase its ---- kittens, from the forest floor hoping they would come down from the trees and within reach of her trunk.

The new creature seems to be carnivores even though the mother did manage to teach her kittens to eat their vegetables on occasion. It was quite obvious, right from the start; the Florida Alligator is no longer at the top of the food chain. Poisonous snakes seem to be a delicacy to the new creature and it eats them like strands of spaghetti.

The occasional tourist seems to agree with the new creature. However, in these extreme cases the tourist is expected to have a paid up ticket allowing them access to the areas the new creatures are known to frequent. Those tourists without tickets may face charges in our court system by our fair and impartial Mount Perry Judges, should they be apprehended either before or after their consumption.
The new creatures are about the size of an elephant and finding trees strong enough to support their weight seems to be giving the new animals some minor problems, this is expected to resolve itself as the weaker branches break under their weight.

Breeding in the wild is expected to continue to be true as there are no house cats or elephants hanging about anywhere near these new critters. Although they trumpet like wild elephants it comes out like a very loud "Meow". A huge litter box has been provided out in the swamps and a man with a backhoe and gas mask has volunteered to keep it clean.
As the number of these new creatures increases, the population will spread out and finally repopulate all of Florida with a new Wooly Mammoth. Dr. Splicer is expected to be featured at a dinner given in his honor, by the tourist trade industry. Dr Splicer doesn??™t know this yet but he will be the only guest and he will be chained to a tree, provided he can be found.

And Then? And Then?
Author: Grammar Wench (Jody Wallace) jwallace@meankitty.com
Original Publication Date in Love Notes: June 2004
Hello again, class. Let me introduce you to some BOYS of whom I am a big FAN. These would be the coordinating conjunctions, those seven little words that have been approved in the English language for joining independent clauses, compound predicates and a few other goodies. To wit: But, Or, Yet, So, For, And and Nor. You can call it BOY FANS, FAN BOYS, OYF SNAB, or whatever it takes to remember them. The significant thing about these words when combined with the strange title of this article is that, although I often see ???then??? used as a coordinating conjunction, it??™s not one.
???Then??? is an adverb, sometimes of the conjunctive variety, but only strong enough to show the relationship between two independent clauses (without joining them). And more rarely it??™s an adjective or a noun. So please, all of you, cease using it as a standalone coordinating conjunction.
I could end my article here, but what the heck am I doing throwing around these dull grammar terms and expecting you to nod your heads wisely and say, ???You changed my life, Grammar Wench???? Let??™s get down and dirty while I explain to you the error of your ways.
Here??™s an example of two independent clauses joined by one of the  FAN BOYS:
Mary Lou flexed her toned biceps to the delight of the mostly male crowd, but her opponent in the mud wrestling pit, Little Awful Annie, did not look concerned.
Now here??™s an example of two independent clauses joined by a sly dog of a ???then??? attempting to masquerade as one of the FAN BOYS:
The buzzer sounded for the match to begin, then Mary Lou strutted through the muck towards Annie.
Ever seen that construction before? Well, maybe not with mud wrestling mamas, but sure you have. It??™s called a comma splice. Have you done it before? Well, slap your hands! No matter how right it looks, it??™s not. A suggested revision is to use ???then??? the way it??™s intended, as an adverb: ???The buzzers sounded, and then Mary Lou strutted.??? When did she strut? ???Then??? is when she strutted! The only conceivable argument to legitimize the construction in the previous example is if it??™s indeed functioning as an adverb, but the word ???and??? is understood. However, that??™s a stretch.
The stretch gets stretchier when ???then??? tries to sneak in and join a compound predicate:
Mary Lou grabbed two big honking handfuls of Annie??™s red hair, then yanked with all her considerable might. (Frequently you??™ll see a comma before ???then??? although, if then were truly an OYF SNAB, one does not use a single comma between the two parts of a compound predicate.)
I know you??™ve seen that one. You??™ve probably done it, too. Heck fire, Mary Lou, I??™ve even done that one. My particular weakness is after a dialogue tag, to wit:
???Holy bowl of granoly!??? Mary Lou shouted in amazement, then threw Awful Annie??™s red wig into the mud. Or would that be Awful Andy?
It feels so right. It flows so well. It looks so pretty. But technically, it??™s as wrong as wearing wooly socks with strappy summer sandals. In fact, if you find a source that condones this construction ??” or the socks with sandals ??” please contact me with all due haste. I??™ve heard defensive rumblings that ???then??? is being used to head an adverbial clause in such instances. However, if you can add ???and??? and not change the meaning of the sentence, it??™s not a clause. It??™s the second half of your compound predicate and thus requires the assistance of one of the FAN BOYS to hook it up to the sentence choochoo.
The word ???then???, as I mentioned above, can also be used as an adjective. How??™s that? When it??™s a synonym for ???being so at that time??? or ???used to be???, like here:
Mary Lou had been stoked to wrestle the then female Annie, but now that Annie was revealed to be a man, Mary Lou wasn??™t so sure she wanted to go through with the exhibition. (Note that I didn??™t use a hyphen between ???then??? and ???female???. That??™s because there??™s not supposed to be one.)
You won??™t see ???then??? used as an adjective that often. Slightly more frequently, you??™ll see it used as a noun when you could also substitute the phrase ???that time???. Here it is functioning as the object of a preposition, i.e.:
Awful Andy leaned to Mary Lou and whispered, ???In thirty minutes the reality TV crew hidden in the crowd will be done filming. Until then, play along so we can get our fifteen minutes of fame.???
Though it seems so simple, one sees ???then??? misused in everything from published books to newspapers to, well, Web pages about grammar. I have no doubt that ???then??? has been ill-used so frequently that it??™s one of those errors that??™s crept into the realm of accepted behavior, like commas between compound predicates. Evil, I know, but people keep doing it. I??™ve even seen conjunctive ???thens??? in a series:
Mary Lou tossed Awful Andy out of the ring, then listened to the crowd roar its approval, then lifted a hand to fluff her hair. Despite the mud smearing every inch of her body and every audience member within ten rows, her golden curls were still clean.
Now if you add an ???and??? before that final then, I??™d accept that ???then??? is being used as an adverb, not a conjunction, and you just had a case of predicates in a series. But otherwise, this is compound evil, folks, and to be avoided.
In case you don??™t want to take my somewhat opinionated word for it, I have snipped a second explanation of why ???then??? isn??™t one of the FAN BOYS from this Web site: http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/conjunctions.htm.
Too many students think that ???then??? works the same way [as the FANBOYS]: ???Caesar invaded Gaul, then he turned his attention to England.??? You can tell the difference between ???then??? and a coordinating conjunction by trying to move the word around in the sentence. We can write, ???he then turned his attention to England???; ???he turned his attention, then, to England???; ???he turned his attention to England then.??? The word can move around within the clause. Try that with a conjunction, and you will quickly see that the conjunction cannot move around.
I??™ll admit it??™s an insidious problem. Instances remain, even in my own pristine pages, of ???then??? used in this wicked manner. Sometimes, because we??™re word artists, because it sounds better, because it??™s easier, we toss aside the rules. Yet your prose will be cleaner and more readable if you toss the rules aside intentionally instead of in ignorance. Here??™s a fact: sentence fragments are technically incorrect as well, and some writers use them to great effect anyway. The rest of the world overuses them and accidentally uses them because they know not what they do, poor things.
Don??™t be a poor thing. Know what you do, and then do it well.

Signed,
The Grammar Wench

Opening Scenes: Part 01

You write a story because you want to have your world exposed. But as a reader, your story has to make two promises. (1) Emotion and (2) Intellectual! We have to feel and think when we read a story.

The Emotional Promise made says, ???Read this and you??™ll be entertained, or thrilled, or scared, or titillated, or saddened, or nostalgic, or uplifting ??“ but always absorbed. Intellectual Promise says, ???Read this and you??™ll see this world from a different perspective. Read this and you??™ll have confirmed what you already want to believe about this world. Read this and you??™ll learn of a different, more interesting world than this.

Writers must know what your story promises because readers do.

Just by reading the opening, readers know what you??™ve promised. Middles??™s have to develop that promise and the ending has to fulfill that promise of the story and feel satisfying to the reader because the beginning was set up to implicit the promise.

Promises are made at the beginning, developed in the middle and fulfilled at the end.

The most important part of the beginning is to keep your reader interested. Don??™t focus on the overall meaning, but on the four elements in the first scene: Character, Conflict, Specificity, and Credibility.

Readers need someone to focus on in the opening. However in short stories the person needs to appear immediately. He should be integral to the story??™s main action and he needs to be an individual and not just a type.

Novels, characters can take longer to appear.

The majority of successful writers give their readers a genuine character, simply because human beings are generally what stories are about. Yet, there are stories that delay the characters until arrival of chapter two. But this is done because something else has enough force to substitute.
