Mommysavers Newsletter - July 24, 2006 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "To bring up a child in the way he should go, travel that way yourself once in a while." -- Josh Billings ============================================================== Hello! We just got back from a week-long vacation. Our trip included several days at the family cabin, attending an air show in Grand Forks, ND, and a minivan break-down and tow (there's always SOMETHING that goes wrong, huh?). I'm recouperating this week... Instead of buying a whole taco kit, buy the season package for .75, then buy the shells for $1 instead of spending 2.99 for a whole kit. -- Username Missystuy Secondhand Clothing Our Goodwills have quarter day each week. On that certain day whatever color they have picked is a quarter. Start there for back to school clothes. The last 2 years I have bought the majority of my daughter's clothes that way. If you get there early you can find good quality clothes without holes/stains. -- Username Deemom Frugal, Flavorful Cooking I cut down our meat portions, eat a lot of chicken & mince (ground meat) but include red kidney beans with it. When making spaghetti I always include extra peeled tomatoes so it stretches for an extra meal. Another great idea for mince: Add a spicy flavour mix then add carrots, peas and cabbage or rice. Serve on rice. -- Username Gda22 These ideas appeared in our Frugal Living Forums: http://mommysavers.com/cgi-bin/iB_cgi/ikonboard.cgi ------------------------------ HOT Deals: Deal of the Day: Martha Stewart Magazine Get one year of Martha Stewart Magazine for only $14.99! Just remove the door and back of the mailbox and let your toy train travel through it. Use for Mesh Onion Bags Use those mesh onion bags in the dishwasher to keep small items from getting thrown about. This works great for washing baby bottle caps and nipples. Here is my version: 4 cans of low sodium Chicken Broth 2 cups of water 4 chicken boulion cubes 2 large skinless chicken breasts (about 1 pound) 1 tablespoon olive oil pepper onion powder garlic powder italian seasoning 5 cups of cheese filled tortellini In a large soup pot add 1 tablespoon of oil. Heat until hot. Add chicken breasts and season heavily with pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning. Just cook until lightly browned. Once chicken is browned, add the chicken broth, water and boulion. Bring to a boil. Once at a boil turn down to medium-low heat and simmer until chicken falls off the bone. Remove bones from broth. Let simmer for another 15 minutes than bring up to a boil and add tortellini. Bring back up to a boil and cook for about 5 minutes or until tortolinni are cooked through. Serve hot with Parmesan cheese and hot crusty bread. So good! Enjoy! -- Username Little Star This recipe came from our recipe archive: http://mommysavers.com/forum/recipes.htm ------------------------------ Creative Kidstuff: Homemade Fingerpaint In a large saucepan combine 1 cup all-purpose flour and 1 cup cold water. Stir till smooth. Add 3 cups additional cold water. Cook and stir over medium heat till mixture thickens and bubbles. Reduce heat. Cook and stir 1 minute more. Remove from heat and pour into three heatproof bowls. Use food coloring to tint desired colors. Cover with plastic wrap, and let stand at room temperature till cool. Spoon paint on paper, paint! It can stain if you use too much food coloring. You want to use a little bit just to get a little color. If you like your child can use paintbrushes and add more food coloring. -- Username Alexmommy This came from our Parenting forum: http://mommysavers.com/forum/parenting.htm ------------------------------ Coming Soon: Back to School Savings |
