Mommysavers Newsletter -- November 17, 2003 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift would be curiosity." --Eleanor Roosevelt ============================================================== Hello! Do you enjoy reality TV? I must admit I get sucked in by some of those shows. I know I'm not alone. I won't be the only one of my friends tuned in to see who Bob chooses on The Bachelor Wednesday night (it's gotta be Mary Jo!). So when I got an e-mail from an ABC producer this week interested in promoting a new reality show in our newsletter, I was intrigued. "The Swap" is a show where moms get to trade places with other families for 10 days. It should be interesting! Scroll down to see how you can apply for this new show. We may actually see a Mommysavers reader on reality television next summer! I found some great deals on gifts through Amazon.com this week. Scroll down to check them out! Finish your holiday shopping early! Have a great week, Kim Danger ------------------------------ Please Visit Our Sponsors: Join a growing group of women who are staying home and loving it! I have recently found a coupon site that Canadian readers might like called http://www.save.ca where you can select your own coupons and have them mailed to your house. -- Thanks to the reader who sent in this tip! Photography/Scrapbooking Don??™t be afraid to use generic film. Most off-brand films are made by the same manufacturer as name-brand films but are packaged differently. For example, Kirkland film featured at off-price retailers such as Costco is made by AGFA (considered high-quality). Buying in multi-packs can also help you save. Check your local Costco, Sam's Club or Wal-Mart stores for the best pricing on film processing. *This tip came from our article "Scrapping on a Shoestring." To view it, click here: http://www.mommysavers.com/Articles/scrappin_on_a_shoestring.htm Laundry An addendum to Jenne from NC's tip on stain removal.. Use the Oxy Clean with whatever spray stain remover you use (Shout, Zout, etc.) Spray stain first with the remover, then make a paste with a small amount of water and Oxy Clean. Spread on the stain and rub it in a little bit. Let sit overnight and then wash as normal. I have yet to have a stain not come out after using this treatment. It's a lifesaver! -- Pam, 29, from NY I read today a tip from a woman to use oxy clean to remove stains. I think Biz works even better. My mother suggested it to me after I gave her a first grandchild and she began pulling from the attic clothes that were mine, now 30 years old! A soak in biz & water had them looking like new. I have received many hand-me-down clothes from friends, some stained, and the Biz had those items looking great too. Also, Lestoil is a great cleaner around the house and for laundry, it even works on red wine! -- Jaime, 30, from VA We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! "The Swap" is an exciting new series that invites you behind the walls of America's homes and lets you experience how families run their lives. Each episode involves two families and a fun twist: The moms of each household swap places for ten days! There are so many moms out there who would like to stay home with their children, but aren't sure how to make ends meet if they quit their jobs. Here's what how one mom responded: Name: Colleen Home: NY Age: 32 Children: 2 Income: $40,000 Sacrifices: I have sacrificed myself. I am not learning, creating, or growing as an individual person. I am growing as a mother and wife, but not myself as an individual. Do you have a budget? Yes. Mortgage $750, Cars $300, Car insurance $100, Groceries $300, Utilities $200, Credit cards 4200, Personal loan $160, Children's activities $80. Do you have to defend your decision to stay home? Most of the time no, but sometimes with other mothers that work or if we are having financial problems, I have to refer back as to why I decided to give up my career and raise my daughters. I want us to know each other and them to feel secure and safe. I would rather have my children than more material things and the position of how important I am in the working world. I know that day will come when my children will not need me as much and I can begin my (life) career again. Advice for a mother that wants to stay home, do it if you want to. If you work but want to be home you will feel burdened by your job and guilty that you are not with your children. But, you have to sacrifice material things and your position in the working world. Just last week Albertson's ran a special where if you purchased $35 worth of certain products, you got Finding Nemo for FREE!!! When I went in to pick up my movie, they also gave you 2 free 12-packs of Albertson's pop and 3 free candy bars. I paid .36 cents (tax) for all of that!!!!! -- Heather, 31, from ID Went to Old Navy right after Halloween and found Halloween flannel pants for my oldest son to sleep in normally $16.50 marked down to $1.97. In the same trip, I also found cute matching Halloween shirts for next year for my twin boys that were usually $9.50 marked down to $0.97, I got both prints that were boyish. They also had little piggy banks that had Happy Halloween in small letters accross the back so they were marked from $5.00 to $0.97. I came out of Old Navy that day with $81.00 worth of stuff for $10.00!! -- Ginny, 28, from AK I find so many but my most recent was some little girl shirts for next summer that are so cute. They are little flowered peasant shirts with a leather tie on the chest - they were 70 cents at Belk. I can't wait for Mia to wear them next year. -- Amy, 32, from GA These great hints came from our Real Mom Profiles. Keep 'em coming! Encourage each family member to contribute to the newspaper. Younger children can dictate stories and draw pictures, while older children can write or type their own pieces. Here are some topics children may enjoy: family vacation, arrival of a new pet, new neighbors, school happenings, sports, hobbies, recipes, jokes, creative writing, birthday celebrations, holidays, interview with parents or grandparents, survey on favorite foods, toys, books, movies, opinions on cooking, family rules, chores Assemble your newspaper on a computer or by cutting and gluing articles to sheets of paper. Circulate your newspaper by posting it on your refrigerator or by sending copies to relatives and friends. Be sure to make enough copies so that each child can save one for posterity. *Editor's Note: The above may give you some ideas for variations on a creative Holiday Newsletter as well!
