"In every conceivable manner, the family is link to our past, bridge to our
future." -- Alex Haley

================================================

Hello!

Greetings from Tomah, Wisconsin.  We are on the way home from visiting my
grandmother in the Chicago area.  We're staying at a fun hotel with a
water park for Sydney.  How nice to have a little break!  I might even get to
read or scrapbook later on today.

I hope you all had a great holiday weekend.  Hopefully those of you who went
out shopping on Friday found some great bargains.

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

More on Air Fresheners...
After reading of the use of the "tree" air fresheners, I thought I would
tell you what I do with them in addition to placing them in each room.  At
Christmas, I use an artificial tree (7-l/2').  I put several of the "pine
scented tree" air fresheners on my Christmas tree so that it has the smell
of the "real thing." -- Iris  ( mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother)

I submitted this after reading about using the auto air freshener. The
windshield cleaner works great on windows. It is sometimes less than a
dollar for a gallon. Much less than a trigger bottle of Windex! -- Sheri,
35, from AZ

I wanted to comment on the tree airfreshners.  You might want to watch where
you put these airfreshers.  I would not hang them on a door since they have
oil in them and can leave a mark. -- Beth, 30, from FL

Kids' Lunches
My boys' sandwiches used to get smashed in their lunchboxes on the way to
school in their heavy backpacks. Now their PB&Js remain perfect thanks to
Rubbermaid sandwich holders. It saves money on plastic bags and waxed paper,
too. -- Joan, 44, from IL

What's New This Week:

Picture of the Week:  "Christmas Tree Wonder" submitted by Kellie R. of Wisconsin
Kellie says, "I took my daughter out shopping with the camera because it was the
last day to mail Christmas packages to soldiers stationed in Iraq.  I wanted my husband
to see a "christmas" photo of her in his stocking that I was mailing so we took some
shots in the store!!.  He left home 8 months ago with the Army National Guard and we
can't wait to have him back, hopefully this coming summer."

Stay at Home Mom Survey 2003:  Denise, age 35, mom of two from Iowa

Household Income: $60,000
Monthly Housing Payment:  $900.00
Current Market Value of House: $155,000

Do you contribute to the household income?
I really don't contribute much to the income other than the savings we built
up when I was working and the things I sell on eBay.

Sacrifices:
I LOVE being a stay at home mom, especially now that the kids are older (2
years & 3 years), and we can get out and do things. I really miss the daily
hustle and bustle of work, the friends, and the gratification you get from
achieving goals and doing a great job! We have sacrificed on extras for
ourselves, eating out, going to movies, and expensives meals at home. Those
are small sacrifices to make to be able to see our little ones grow up!!

Do You Have a Budget?
ABSOLUTELY! I'm an accountant, so I couldn't live without a budget!! It's
not really a budget that limits how much we spend in which area, but an
overall budget of "here's what we have to spend this month-what needs to
come first?" We have a set amount transfered to our savings account each
payday so we aren't tempted to spend that money. And any extra money that we
get (tax rebates, bonuses, gifts, garage sale proceeds) all go directly to
the kids' college funds and savings accounts. It's hard to do at first, but
gets easier each month! Any raises that my husband gets go directly to
savings, too.

Advice:
I have only had to defend our decision a couple of times. Most people I know
would LOVE to be able to stay at home, too. I consider myself very lucky!
Advice? Well, if you really want to do it, you can find a way. If you stay
at home, you don't need expensive clothes or ten pairs of shoes any more!
They are just going to get dirty anyway!! Garage sales and eBay have become
very good friends of mine! We often have hamburger meals, meatless meals or
breakfast for dinner (one of the kids' favorites!). Our membership to the
YMCA is invaluable. Exercise classes and yoga have been my sanity savers.
You have to remember to take time for yourself. No matter how hard it is to
find that time, you MUST do it!! Some other tips: color your own hair & wear
it longer so you don't need cuts as often, use coupons and buy store brands
instead of name brands and stock up at Aldi, look for clothes for yourself
at garage sales, too-you'll be amazed at what you find! Good luck & remember
that the sacrifices may only be for a few years if you go back to work when
the kids are in school!

Look for more survey results in upcoming newsletters!

Real Moms:  In the Kitchen

Tortilla Pizzas-- The kids LOVE these.  Buy the 10" flat tortillas.  Get you
