Money/Time Saving Ideas:

After-Holiday Sales
I am SAHM of 2 boys.  I go shopping for birthdays and quite a few Christmas
presents for the FOLLOWING year the day after Christmas.  The sales are
phenomanal and most people are in line to return or exchange items, they
aren't shopping!  I go armed with a list of who I am looking for and what
their ages (or sizes if they are adults) and SHOP SHOP SHOP!  I usually end
up only having to buy one or two birthday presents throughout the year, even
for those birthday parties that you did not plan on going to!   I always
find baby gifts to stash away for that friend who suddenly turns up pregnant
and lots of items for teacher gifts.  The craft stores are great to hit for
holiday paper and decorations.  I also do this about 2 days after Easter,
Halloween and 4th of July and am able to pick up really awesome decorations
clearanced out!   PS- If you buy "holiday" chocolate on clearance and put it
in your freezer to save, it does not go bad! -- Angie

I always buy several close out 50% off Christmas red and green chocolate
kisses and M&M's.  Just separate the red and greens and use them for
upcoming holidays. I use the red ones for Valentines day (Just zip lock them
for 6 weeks) and the green ones can be eaten or saved for St. Patricks
Day.--  Barb from Sammamish, Washington

I shop for my Christmas cards in mid-January.  Last year, I went to Target
at that time and they had ALL of their leftover Christmas stuff marked 90%
off!!!  I bought 20 boxes of Christmas cards (gave several to family members
to use this year), as well as 30 gift boxes, several sheets of self-adhesive
Christmas gift tags, Christmas card seals, several bags of bows (the fancy
ones - shiny, metallic & sheer), and various other small items (gift bags,
fake snow, etc.) - I walked out carrying 5 large bags of goodies, and my
total bill was under $15.00 (the cards were about .15 cents a box).  That
means I was able to mail out almost 50 cards (we have a very large family)
for less than $20.00 this year - barely the cost of the postage.  There are
two drawbacks to my method, but they are minor:  1) the selection is much
smaller than if you shop during the current season, and 2) it's hard to
resist buying the cute new cards that come out for the current season!  But
the willpower is worth the money saved (the boxes I bought were regularly
priced from $2 to $5 a box).  Also, a great deal I got on that same shopping
trip:  Target had clearanced their big-name toys which they had overstocked
for the holidays, and I bought a Radio Flyer Little Red Roadster, whose MSRP
at their online store was $85 (at that time) for $12.50.  My son has loved
that toy, and it is of such good quality it will definitely get passed down
a decade or two (we opened it immediately, because his birthday isn't until
August - but, had his birthday come along sooner, we would have put it away
for a birthday gift). -- Laura, 26, from TX

Gift-Giving
One of the best things my kids open at Christmas is their stockings.  I love
to fill it with books and puzzle books and games and the best place to get
these items is from the dollar store.  I have 5 kids, and a tight budget!
My kids all love to read and do word search puzzles and the dollar store
always has a great supply of them.

Gift Wrap Ideas:

Ever wonder how much money and time we spend on selecting the perfect gift
wrap?  How about calling/visiting your local newspaper office and asking if
the end rolls of plain newsprint is available!  In our towne, this paper is
100% free!   Select several holiday themed stamps and several colors of
stamp pads.  Wrap gift and let your kids go wild with the stamps!  Tie with
ribbons or sisal twine and you have a perfect personalized package!
Newsprint can be recycled, commercial wrap cannot. -- Frances

Another tip for inexpensive wrapping is to use the brown paper bags from the
supermarket. It is especially helpful for large gifts. I just wrap the gift
in the brown paper bag and you can usually dress it up with ribbon. Or my
son decorates the bag with rubber stamps, glitter glue, markers etc. It has
come in handy plenty of times when I needed last minute wrapping paper. --
Melissa, 35, from NY

During the year, as I visit garage sales, etc, I collect candy and popcorn
tins of various sizes.  I use these to store Christmas decorations and
ornaments in during the majority of the year.  At Christmas time these tins
end up under the tree with the presents in them.  I have also purchased
various Christmas prints and made drawstring bags of various sizes.  There
are some really beautiful fabrics that outdo any wrapping paper.  I didn't
acquire these all at once, just a little at a time.  I keep my eyes open and
also acquired a beautiful set of cloth covered hat boxes for the same
purpose.   -- Rachelle, 42, from MN

To save money I save my christmas cards from year to year and cut the front
of the card off and use them as gift tags on christmas gifts. When I am
wrapping my gifts I just sort through the cards till I find one that is
appropriate. -- Lori, 33, from IL

Real Moms:  Money Saving Tips

My best money saving tip is stay at home.  The more you are away from home
the more you will spend.  Hard to spend money, even on gas, when you find
things to do at home. -- Sherry, 33, from TX

Take only a certain amount of cash with you when you grocery shop and you
will not be so tempted to overspend. Also, buy generics and build your
grocery list on what's on sale that week. -- Libby from AL

I try to buy as much of my kids clothes as possible for the next year at end
of season clearance sales.  Just this last Sunday my son wore an outfit to
church that was from Old Navy and The Gap.  The entire outfit, sweater,
cords, and shoes, cost me $6. -- Kelly, 29, from UT

Fun for You and Your Kids:  Dough Ornaments

2 cups flour
1 cup of salt
2 tablespoons of Vegetable oil
1/3 - 1 cup water

Mix flour and salt together.  Add oil. Add water until flour becomes dough
like. Cut dough with cookie cutters.  Be creative.  Add ornament holder
(Those metal tree hangs) by sticking it through the top of ornament so it is
in the dough and concealed.  Or puncture dough with ice pic and after
backed, add ribbon (hang on tree from ribbon). Put on cookie sheet and bake
for about an hour (sometimes more) on 250. Remove from oven and let cool.
When cool, paint (make sure you use gloss craft paint, or metallic, they
yield the best results).  You can add wiggly eyes, and be creative. We write
our family's name on the back and year. We give out over 100 a year, and my
cost is under 5 dollars.  They are great for teachers, doctors, therapists,
mail men, family members. -- Julie de Rose, CA
