Battery Savings
those button batteries are expensive. so what I do is go to my local
goodwill/thrift store/garage sale I buy the "noise/music making" books for
$0.99 or less and now I have new batteries. I am not usually concerned about
the actual book itself just the batteries. always test the books to make
sure the batteries work, push all the tabs to test the batteries. Someone
also mentioned that these books are 75% off at Target. Depending on the
price of the book it may be worth it to buy it for the batteries. -- Member

Energy Savings
I am on a mission to cut our heating bills this winter. DH and I decided
that a programmable thermostat should help. Since I am now working, no one
will be home most days, so we are going to lower the temp a few degrees and
also lower it at night. Hopefully, dh can get it installed this weekend
since we had to turn the furnace on today. I was shocked at how cheap they
are. Ours was only $39 and there were cheaper ones available! I should be
able to more than save that in a month or two -- Member

Positive Feedback Pays
I am obsessed with the new glade scented oil candle refills. I wrote
Glade and told them I love their product, and the scents available, and that
they will always have me as a customer. They called one day and said they
were sending me 3 refill packs for free. Definitely wasn't expecting that.
They will have me as a customer for life! I guess it pays to tell companies
what a great job they're doing. I think they liked the positive feedback.

October Recipe of the Month
Just in time for football and cold weather, our
recipe of the month is... chili! See how other Mommysavers moms make
their version of this hearty classic.
Beer Cheese Soup
1/3 lb. butter
6 C. chicken stock or broth
8 oz. shredded cheese (we LOVE to use a smoked cheese with this recipe-
it REALLY brings out the extra flavor...other cheeses that are GREAT are
sharp cheddar, mild cheddar)
1 1/2 C. small chopped carrots
1/2 C. small chopped celery
1 tsp. garlic (more if you love garlic- I usually use 1 1/2 tsp OR use
two fresh DICED garlic cloves)
6 Tbsp. flour
12 oz. beer (try not to use a light beer, it takes away the flavor)
Salt and pepper
Fresh popped popcorn or croutons
Saute celery, onions, carrots (and garlic if you're using fresh) in
butter at the bottom of a med to large pot. Add salt, pepper and blend
in flour. Make sure to FULLY blend in the flour before adding ANY
liquid- or the flour will ball up (YUCK). Add chicken stock (and garlic
powder if you are using powder). Heat the stock until it is hot all the
way through and THEN add cheese. Adding the cheese to cool broth doesn't
allow it to properly "mix". ONLY ADD CHEESE BY SMALL HANDFULS AT A
TIME! Let a small amount melt BEFORE adding more or the soup won't be as
creamy. add beer and cook on low- stirring frequently so it doesn't
clump or scald on the bottom. When serving, put into a bowl and have
croutons OR popcorn to put on top. The popcorn is a HUGE favorite in our
house!
