Money Saving Ideas

Pampering for Pennies I love pampering myself but can not see getting manicures. I bought some cuticle oil and a buff block at Walmart for a total of 3 dollars. It lasts about 6 months. I do my nails once a week. For about 13 cents a week, I have pretty nails. My friends always comments that they look so nice. -- Member sawick

Meal Planning Every Wednesday I sit down and go through the paper (which was given to me after my in-laws were done with it, meaning FREE). I get out the sales ads and start making my grocery list. Thankfully Wal-Mart matches prices so I only have to spend the gas going to ONE store!  I try to make my meals from my on-hand stash and CHEAP sales ad finds! For Example: one week I bought a 5 pound bag potatoes for .99 and Kraft Cheese (24 slices) for .99.  With this I added milk and made potato soup! -- Member Mommy2Ryan

Frugal Kidstuff I can't stay home all day, my little man and I are too active. I have found all the free/cheap activities: playgroup through the Mom's club, story time at the library, Kindergym through park and recreation (only $4/visit). We never just go to the mall or a store for fun, too tempting! Also, forget those expensive music/Gymboree classes!  We can march around the house playing a tambourine. -- Member Liamsmom

Cheesy Bacon Spanish Rice

4 slices bacon
1 c. onion, chopped
1/2 c. green pepper, diced
1 16 ounce can diced tomatoes
water (about 1 1/3 c)
1 8 ounce can tomato sauce
1 t. salt
1 1/2 c. long grain rice, uncooked
1/2 c. cheddar cheese

Fry bacon until crispy. Remove from pan, drain and crumble into pieces. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In bacon droppings, cook onion and green pepper until tender. Drain tomatoes, reserving liquid. Add enough water to the liquid to make 1 3/4 c. Add liquid, tomatoes, tomato sauce and salt to onion mixture. Heat to boiling. Stir in rice. Remove from heat and pour into grease 1 1/2 quart casserole. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
