Mommysavers Newsletter -- March 15, 2004 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "Mother's love grows by giving." -- Charles Lamb ============================================================== Hello! I have vowed to get our house in order this Spring and will begin the monumental task of cleaning out my basement this week. I still have all of Sydney's clothes from the past 4-1/2 years. We are going to have one big rummage sale this year! However, with two kids it is hard enough to keep the house picked up as it is, let alone actually IMPROVING conditions. Next week we're starting a new Mommysavers column in which a NEW writer exclusive to our website will share some humorous snippets about parenting. As moms, you will be able to relate! Be sure to look for her views on mealtime with kids next week. Have a good week! I pour 4 capfuls of fabric softener, fill the bowl w/water, add small sponges inside. When I put the clothes in the dryer, I add one of the sponges to the load. This saves a load of money! -- Kimmy, 36, from TX Cleaning supplies I bought spray bottles at the Dollar Store. I put 1/2 cup of Pine-Sol & the rest w/ warm water for basic cleaning, 1/4 cup bleach & the rest w/ water for deep cleaning, & 1 capful of Dreft baby detergent & the rest water for spraying on stains on baby clothes before I wash them. It ALL works so well, & it's a great way to save money on cleaning supplies! -- Kimmy, 36, from TX Swim Diapers Little Swimmers swim diapers are machine washable. We bought one pack for her first summer, which she is now grown out of. We bought one pack last summer, which she is still using now for swim lessons and still fits into. I just turn them inside out and throw in the wash (with anything) and hang them anywhere to dry. The reason they don't swell up is because they're designed to hold solids but let liquid run through. -- Gena, 41, from MN We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! Last year I purchased 3-4 matching bright shirts for my boys, age 3 and 5, before our trip. Watch the sale racks. For instance one set had Red and bright Yellow stripes. I'd dress them the same each day. It made them so easy to spot in a crowd. It really helped us keep tabs on them when they were running around the kids play areas. -- Pam from CO One way I save money when traveling is to purchase Entertainment books from the destination I'm traveling to. They are currently offering discounts and free shipping for this years books because it is late in their selling season. http://www.mommysavers.com/deals/entertainment_book. -- Vanessa from OH Do not purchase souvenirs at the Disney Parks. Go to the local Walmart and purchase lots of souvenirs for a fraction of the price! -- L. Dennis from PA For dozens more of the tips our readers have sent, click here: http://www.mommysavers.com/moneysavingideas/disney_savers.htm ----------------------------- What's For Dinner? Readers Share their favorite quick-and-easy meals Chicken Barbeques: I take 4 chicken breasts and a bottle of my favorite barbeque sauce. Place chicken in crock pot. Top with sauce. Cook on low approx 6-8 hours. Shred the chicken with a fork an hour or two before serving. Leave shredded chicken and sauce in crock pot to simmer the last 1-2 hours. You can serve on buns with cheese or whatever you like on your barbeque. This is cheap as well as low-fat. Greek Chicken: I overheard two women at a meeting talking about the recipe, and went home and made it. I've made it hundreds of times, and everyone loves it. It calls for chicken thighs (any amount) kosher salt, oregano, and olive oil. You put the chicken in a large pan. Rub olive oil on it, then sprinkle oregano and kosher salt on it. Bake at 300 for 2-3 hours. The skin will be crispy, and the meat is so tender it falls off the bone. There will be lots of fat in the bottom of the pan, so just drain that off. Delicious! Buy yourself a good PLASTIC coupon organizer that expands. It won't rip under pressure or constant use. Keep it in your car. I save more money with it always being available and check multiple ads for the products you want to buy. -- Mary, 27, from NY Shop the 'damaged goods/reduced items' bin at your grocery store. I picked up boxes of fruit snacks for 50 cents a piece (normally 2.69) and brought them to my daycare. -- Cathy, 36, from CT Instead of buying small packages of meat, I buy family packs then seperate them for the freezer. -- Amanda, 23, New Brunswick, Canada These great hints came from our Real Mom Profiles. Keep 'em coming! To fill one out, click here: http://www.mommysavers.com/real_mom_profiles.htm ------------------------------ Fun for You and Your Kids: St. Patrick's Day Fun Green Hats You'll Need: Green Paint 16x20 inch sheets of newspaper 1x2 inch piece of sponge Plastic lids (for paint) Fold sheets of newspaper in half, short end on short end. Fold the top corners (folded ends) over so they meet in the center. Fold up the bottom edges so they meet the folded edges. Pour a small amount of paint in a plastic lid, dip the sponge in the paint, and let your child decorate the hat. Hide the Shamrock You'll Need: Green construction paper Scissors Cut a shamrock out of green construction paper. Choose a child to be "it." While the other children hide their eyes, "it" hides the shamrock within a designated area. Everyone then opens their eyes and tries to find the shamrock. The finder gets to be "it" for the next round.
