Mommysavers Newsletter -- March 22, 2004 Visit our site for more great resources: http://www.mommysavers.com "If a person gets his/her attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area of his life." -- Billy Graham ============================================================== Happy Spring! We have two exciting new features on the site this week I want to tell you about. First and foremost is Mommysavers' new contributing writer, Allison Braswell. I found a pizza cutter to be a quick and easy way to cut their sandwiches, french toast, waffles, etc. I purchased a couple of inexpensive ones so that I always have one available. They cut better and don't "drag" the sandwich, tearing it and making it a mess! -- Deb, 32, from MN eBay I troll eBay for Toys r Us/Kids r Us/Babies R Us gift cards so when I use the gift cards at the store, I'm already shopping with a discount. I won't bid more than 80-85% of their value (face value plus any shipping charges) and although I lose some auctions, I win them often enough to allow me to shop at TRU/KRU/BRU at a 15-20% discount BEFORE any coupons! I just go to eBay when I need more gift cards! -- Theresa, 38, from VA To shop eBay for gift cards, click here: http://www.mommysavers.com/ebay.htm Gardening/ Lawn Care: Total vegetation herbicides (Products like Round-Up) are convenient and easy to use. We consider them essential for things like keeping weeds out of the cracks in our driveway etc. But they can also be very expensive. I learned about a great alternative, VINEGAR! Simply pour some good ole' white vinegar full strength into a clean spray bottle and go kill weeds! It'll kill any plant you spray (I'm told it'll even kill pioson ivy but I haven't tried it)so be careful not to spray on a windy day or too close to plants you want to keep. At about $1 per gallon it's about 1/20th the cost of those pricey herbicides you get from your local garden center AND it's non-toxic to children and animals. -- Cindi, 33, from GA We need YOUR tips for our newsletter! Come One, Come All! http://www.storknet.com ----------------------------- Garage Sale Season: Tips from our Readers Your note about getting ready for a garage sale reminded me of a tip I was given years ago by another mom. She prices her kids clothes as they outgrow them. She keeps tags or making tape and a pen by the "garage sale box" in the basement and as the clothes that the children have just outgrown come out of the laundry she prices them right away and puts them in the box. That way she doesn't have much prep work the week before the garage sale. It really works! You probably spend the same amount of time pricing but doesn't seem so overwhelming spread out throughout the year. -- Diane, 41, from IL I make a list thru-out the year of things we'd like to have but don't need right away . I write down on our calendar when the community wide garage sales days are and budget a little money for them. My kids love to go with, and I always point out it's not a good deal if we didn't need it or it wasn't a previous want. We don't buy something from every sale. We leave early pack snacks and running shoes. I have gone to the same garage sale for the past two years, she now calls me as soon as she setup so I can "preview." She has two that are just bigger than two of mine! Good luck! It's an art! -- Jody 25, from WI If your paper has a garage sale section to the classifieds, check them out and map out a route, stopping only at sales that have items listed that you need. I can't wait for sales to start; I am itching to go out and save, save, save!!! -- Wendy, 29, from CO ----------------------------- What's Cookin': CROCK POT CHICKEN 1 (4 lb.) roasting chicken (or parts) salt and pepper to taste onion salt to taste 3 Tbsp. butter, melted 1 tsp. dried tarragon 3 Tbsp. chopped parsley 1/3 c. dry white wine Wash and dry chicken and sprinkle inside and out with salt, pepper and onion salt. Put chicken in cooker, breast side up; brush with butter and sprinkle with parsley and tarragon. Add wine. Cover the slow cooker. Cook on high for about an hour, then turn to low and continue cooking for 8 to 10 hours until chicken is done. Makes 6 servings. This recipe came from our Crock Pot page: http://www.mommysavers.com/slow_cooker.htm ----------------------------- Real Moms: Organization Don't buy fancy "baby snack containers" -- even the throw-away ones which cost about 2.50/6. Instead just get the Gladware or Rubbermaid 4 oz. containers. They're about half the price and are the same thing. -- Lil' Mama Kas, 26, from NJ Use photo boxes to store receipts and coupons. I organize recipts by store because I'm an implulse buyer and am always returning things after I think about it. This makes it easier. -- Mary, 27, from NJ I have Kel's toys in covered containers, and seperated. Her bath toys are in a covered container in the bathroom, her hair accesories are seperated in old diaper wipe containers in her bedroom, and I have containers in each room of the house for toys that she plays with in that room. And I keep mitts and hats and scarves in a bag hanging in the closet with the ackets. -- Amanda, 23, from NB Candada These great hints came from our Real Mom Profiles. Keep 'em coming!
