Editor's Note

Hello from Mommysavers!                                                                  1.28.2008

February is almost here.  We've got some exciting changes in store next month: new forum features such as chat and gallery as well as a server upgrade.  As a result, we may have some server downtime this weekend and in the weeks ahead.  We'll be back better than ever when the glitches are ironed out.

Also, it's not too late to join our Forget the Joneses project!  We've had lots of success stories so far.  Check them out by visiting this link: Forget the Joneses

Have a great week,

Kim

Money Saving Ideas

Saving on Eggs Firstly, fill a fairly deep bowl with water and carefully lower the egg into the water.
A very fresh egg will immediately sink to the bottom and lie flat on its side. This is because the air cell within the egg is very small. The egg should also feel quite heavy.  As the egg starts to lose its freshness and more air enters the egg, it will begin to float and stand upright. The smaller end will lie on the bottom of the bowl, whilst the broader end will point towards the surface. The egg will still be good enough to consume, however, if the egg fully floats in the water and does not touch the bottom of the bowl at all, it should be discarded, as it will most likely be bad. -- Member MsJoyce

Entertainment Savings We recently we started utilizing our local library which has a huge dvd colletion you can check out for free. It has saved us money plus we really enjoy having a family night at home with popcorn and a movie-instead of going to the theater all the time. -- Member rmducote

Cloth Napkins  When I found a dozen cloth napkins on after-Christmas clearance for about $3, I announced that beginning with the new year, we would be using only cloth napkins.  I love it. I don't know how much we're saving, but I love the effect. Our meals haven't changed -- I'm still preparing the same foods -- but everything seems more elegant. Dh even started lighting the candle in the centerpiece. -- Member Jeweled

What's New

Forget the Joneses Success Story of the Week: kdwards313 I, too, am finding that just by staying home, I typically lose the urge to go shop. I had thought about going to Fred's yesterday (they double coupons up to 70 cents on Saturday). But there was really nothing that I NEEDED, so I just didn't go. I am proud of my self because if I had gone, even if I didn't buy anything, it would have cost me a couple of dollars in gas money. Read more...
