"Man is most nearly himself when he achieves the seriousness of a child at
play." -- Heraclitus

==============================================================

Hello!

I hope you all had a GREAT Mother's Day.  I was treated to a "No Housework"
day, along with breakfast in bed and steaks on the grill for dinner.  It was
wonderful!

I am excited to tell you all I have begun work on my first book, which will
include 1000 ways for parents to save money in baby's first year.  It is
scheduled for publication next Spring, but the manuscript is due August 1st.
Yikes!  I don't have much time to get all the tips compiled, so I may be
calling upon you to help me out on various topics.  If you're interested in
offering suggestions, please visit the brainstorming board I have set up:
http://www.mommysavers.com/baby_toc.htm

Have a good week,
Kim Danger

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Snack Food
I bought a lot of the Glad or Ziplock small snack size containers and fill
them with my own pudding, jello & fruit. For my husband I take crushed gram
crackers wit melted butter in the bottom, cheese cake flavored pudding, then
diffrent flavored pie filling on top to make personal sized cheesecakes for
his lunch. This has saved me so much money in snack food. I have 2 boys of
my own and I run a small daycare out of my home. -- Judy, 32, from PA

Mommy Time
So many times as mothers we don't have enough time to pamper ourselves.
Well - I've found a great way you can pamper yourself when taking care of
your kids.  While my daughter is taking her bath, I pull a chair up and soak
my feet in the tub with her.  She giggles because it's funny to have mommy's
feet in her bathtub.  I love it because I get to give myself a pedicure!  No
more ugly summer feet. -- Karen, 34, from MN

Veggies
I like to "sneak" extra vegetables into my children's diet.  For instance, I
will add pureed carrots to my spagetti sauce, I add pureed cauliflower to
mashed potatoes, etc...I add pureed beans (butter bean, lima beans) and
applesauce, bananas, etc when baking instead of oil or shortening.  My kids
have no idea and they think my brownies, pancakes and muffins are the best
they have ever had!  I also have my children help plant and grow vegetables
and this also entices them to try new fruits and vegetables. -- Anne, 42,
from NJ

Real Moms:  Best Bargain Ever

$3 changing table from garage sale, and $2 can of spray paint for touch-ups.
Resold on consignemnt for $39!!!  (I got half, but still, what a deal!) --
Beth, 31, from TX

Recently at Kohl's I found a pair of boy's leather Carter's sandals reg.
priced $25 for a dollar! Not that I needed them but I will find someone who
can use them or I will put them in a consignment sale and make a few bucks!
Also at a recent yard sale I bought a Big Trike for my son.  It sells on
Overstock.com for $80 and I bought it for $20. It was practically new, the
grandfather was selling it saying his grandson never rode it because he had
some other motorized vehicles he like better. Anyway my son LOVES it!!! Also
recently found at T.J. Maxx a three pack of Oshkosh underwear for my son for
$2. -- Bekki, 35, from TN

What We're Talking About:  On Our Discussion Board This Week

Crock Pot Recipes
Thanks to Kim P. for sharing this!  Kim writes, "OK, this is from memory, so
I hope I get it right. I rarely use a recipe, but "to taste". My family is
Italian, and nothing has been written down for generations...you're just
taught "to cook."

1 pound smoked sausage (we use the skinless variety)
1-2 red peppers (dd picks them out first, and asks for more, so I use more!)
5-7 red potatoes
2 T olive oil (or veg. oil, if you prefer)
2 cloves garlic, crushed (garlic press comes in handy)
2 tsp. rosemary (fresh or dried)

Cut potatoes into chunks, leave skin on. Cut peppers into strips. Toss
potatoes, peppers, garlic, rosemary and olive oil together and place in a
microwave safe bowl. Cover, and microwave on high 5 minutes; stir, re-cover,
then microwave 5 more minutes on high. Add cut up sausage (we usually make
about 1/2 inch pieces - not too big, so they are toddler-friendly size), and
microwave for another 5-7 minutes. Check potatoes for doneness, sprinkle
with parmesean cheese (fresh-grated is our favorite), and serve. We are
going to try this next with apple-chicken sausage (our Sam's is starting to
carry some of Emeril's line) - now that we are beginning to get some "real"
food in central Indiana! One of the things I miss living here is the
old-style Italian butcher shop! Happy cooking

Your Help Is Needed:  Baby Bargains

What advice do you have for expectant parents shopping for baby?  How should
they spend their money?  Let us know which specific products, brands and
stores you're talking about (for example, "I don't recommend buying a wipe
warmer because..."  Or, "The BabyTrend stroller was great because." or "I
didn't like Avent bottles because." or "I love shopping for maternity
clothing at Motherhood, but their fabrics shrunk horribly." etc.  We're also
looking for homemade baby items, alternate uses for everyday items, home remedies, ways
of extending the life of your purchases, safety tips, etc.   Any ways new
parents can cut corners would be great.  Thanks in advance!
