"In general my children refuse to eat anything that hasn't danced in
television." -- Erma Bombeck

==============================================================

Hello!

This weekend I'll be attending my 15-year class reunion.  It's hard to
believe it's been that long!  I'm from a small town, and my graduating class
only had about 100 people.   I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone
has been up to for the past decade or so.

I am going to make a big push to finish work on my "Baby Bargains" book this
week.  I have a few areas where I could use some more input from you moms.
Among the areas I need more ideas are inexpensive keepsakes, photos and
camcorders, party ideas, saving for college, outlet shopping, etc.

Money/Time Saving Ideas:

Portraits
Sears Portrait Studio now lets you choose your photo when buying a package.
They used to give you your package from the first accepted pose.  Now that I
can select the pose I want, I'm a much more satisfied customer!  Plus, I can
usually find coupons to get dozens of pictures for under $10. -- Karla, 32,
from MN

Decorating
Instead of using paint swatches in choosing your paint color, use larger
items like articles of clothing, a sheet, or other accessories. Bring the
actual item to the paint store, and they should be able to match it
perfectly. -- Susie, 33, from MN

Fitness
One thing I have always "splurged" on is working out (this is for my mental
sanity, I have four small children).  I live in New England, so outdoor
exercise is non-existent during the winter.  I recently took a job teaching
a sport at the local YMCA.  For a few hours of teaching per week (for which
I get paid), I receive free day care (where most parents leave their kids to
exercise) a free membership for my family, and a discount on all lessons,
swimming, gymnastics, etc. I also receive a discount at the Y's snack bar.
You don't have to teach a sport, many gyms will give you a free membership
for working at the front desk, in the daycare, etc. I figure I am saving at
least $70 or more per month.  If you are new to an area, this can help you
meet people as well.  I also have the summers off, but still keep my
membership.  Connecticut is an expensive state, so this is one of the best
ways to save money I have found! -- Mary, 37, from CT

Decor for Kids:  Tips from our Readers

I love Mary Engelbreit so I wanted to decorate our daughter's nursery with a
ME theme. I decided to choose 3 of my favorite prints from the ME wall
calendars I've had over the years.  I cropped them and matted them (with
scrap matting from a local framing store) to fit white frames that I
purchased for $15 each. We painted the walls a light sage green. I purchased
ME flower wallies for $10/pkg and did an easy chair rail-type border in the
room. I told friends my theme and got some great shower gifts that they
purchased off e-bay- a light switch cover, a snow globe, clock, blocks, a
kitty cat pull toy, and a quilt they made from fabric purchased from a
website- all ME.  The crib bumper is simply a light green and white checker
pattern and the sheets were solid colors purchased from Target and Babies R
Us.  I accented with white furniture and small white scalloped display
shelves purchased from Target.  My little girl's room is simple and so
cute! -- Melissa, 34, from WA

What's Cookin':  Two Great Chicken Recipes

Chicken Barbeques
You'll need 4 chicken breasts and a bottle of your favorite barbeque
sauce. Place chicken in crock pot. Top with sauce. Cook on low approx 6-8
hours. Shred the chicken with a fork an hour or two before serving. Leave
shredded chicken and sauce in crock pot to simmer the last 1-2 hours. You
can serve on buns with cheese or whatever you like on your barbeque. This is
cheap as well as low in fat.

Greek Chicken
You'll need chicken thighs (any amount), kosher salt, oregano, and olive
oil. Put the chicken in a large pan. Rub olive oil on it, then sprinkle
oregano and
kosher salt on it. Bake at 300 for 2-3 hours. The skin will be crispy, and
the meat is so tender it falls off the bone. There will be lots of fat in
the bottom of the pan, so just drain that off. Delicious!  (I overheard two
women at a meeting talking about the recipe, and went home and made it. I've
made it hundreds of times, and everyone loves it.)

Real Moms:  My Best Bargain Ever

When I was pregnant with my youngest, I went to a sale that only had baby
boy clothes.  No one was even looking at them, so I went up to the couple
and asked what they would take for all of it.   I got 3 trash bags for $50
because she wanted the stuff to be gone and didn't want to sit out with a
toddler!  All of it was GAP, Tommy, Old Navy, etc.!  I used it all until
Asher was too big, then eBayed it for a profit! -- Jodi, 32, from KY

I found baskets at Michaels for $.59 and $.89.  I was so excited!!  They were
90% off!!! -- Christine, 33, from FL

Kid to Kid - it is a resale shop that will buy toys, clothes from you and
then resale them for cheap. I have bought most of his clothes there and half
of them still have the tag on and I typically pay between $2 - 5 for sets of
clothes. -- Jeri, 22, from TX
